Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a new Skyrim or Fallout 4 mod setup, install Vortex—not the original Nexus Mod Manager (NMM). The last official NMM release, 0.65.2, can no longer sign in to Nexus Mods through its retired legacy API. Nexus Mods now directs users to Vortex, although community-maintained NMM builds still exist. This guide walks through the current Vortex workflow and explains how to avoid the edition, dependency, load-order, and save problems that old NMM tutorials often leave out.
These instructions are for Windows PC installations. Vortex supports Skyrim and Fallout 4; exact screens and labels may vary by version. If you use an old NMM guide, expect its buttons and login steps to differ.
Before you install a mod
First identify the exact game and platform. A mod for one edition may not work in another, even when the game names look similar. Bethesda distinguishes Skyrim Special Edition from other Skyrim versions, including through its in-game Creations menu: Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition support page.
- Skyrim: Check whether you have original Skyrim/Legendary Edition, Special Edition, Anniversary Edition content, or Skyrim VR. Anniversary Edition can refer to a content bundle as well as a game-version state; use the executable runtime and the mod author’s compatibility notes, not just the store label.
- Fallout 4: Confirm whether you have the standard game or Fallout 4 VR, and whether the PC installation is from Steam, the Microsoft Store/Xbox app, or Epic. Installation paths and access can differ by storefront.
- For every mod: Read its game designation, supported game version, requirements, compatibility notes, and installation instructions before downloading.
As a precaution, install and launch the unmodded game once, reach its main menu, then close it. This lets the game create its initial configuration files; it is useful preparation, not a universal technical requirement. Back up important saves and make sure you have room for both downloaded archives and installed files. If a modlist requires a fixed runtime, consider disabling automatic game updates where your platform allows it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Common Steam paths include C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSkyrim Special Edition and C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout 4. One Xbox app example is C:XboxGamesFallout 4 (PC)Content. Bethesda lists different Fallout 4 directories for Steam, Xbox app, and Epic installations in its Fallout 4 support guidance. Your own location may differ. A game or modding folder outside Windows’ deeply protected directories—such as D:GamesSkyrim Special Edition and D:ModdingSkyrim—can reduce permission problems, though an installation under Program Files does not inevitably fail.
Vortex, NMM, or Mod Organizer 2?
The original NMM is legacy software, not the current official Nexus manager. Nexus Mods announced that it was ending development of the newer Nexus Mods App and refocusing development on Vortex. The last official NMM release, 0.65.2, lost Nexus login functionality after the legacy API was retired. A community-maintained NMM project remains available, but it is separate from the current first-party recommendation. See Nexus Mods’ app FAQ, its NMM announcement, and the community NMM releases.
| Manager | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Vortex | Beginners who want Nexus Mods integration and a guided workflow for installing, enabling, deploying, and managing mods. | Its handling of complex setups can be less transparent than MO2’s to users who want explicit, granular conflict control. |
| Mod Organizer 2 | Experienced users who want profiles, a virtualized setup, and clear control over mod priority and conflicts. | It has a steeper learning curve and is not the same workflow as Vortex. |
| Community NMM | People maintaining an existing NMM installation or a setup built around a legacy guide. | It is not the current official Nexus manager; support and compatibility belong to that community project. |
For a new setup, use Vortex unless a specific, trustworthy guide or modlist requires another manager. Choose one manager to control a given game installation rather than casually mixing managers. If you retain community NMM, get it only from its legitimate project releases—not from a third-party “NMM download” site.
Install Vortex and connect it to Nexus Mods
- Download Vortex from the official Nexus Mods Vortex page. Do not use a third-party installer site.
- Install and open Vortex on Windows. Sign in or authorize it with your Nexus Mods account when prompted.
- If a browser prompt asks to open a Nexus link in Vortex, allow the handoff. Nexus documents the manager-download process on its Mod Manager Download instructions.
Vortex is updated regularly, so follow the current controls rather than relying on a version number or a screenshot from an older tutorial. Nexus describes Vortex as its current manager and supports Skyrim and Fallout 4; see the Vortex overview and the Vortex project.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set up the correct game and folders
- In Vortex, open the Games or game-management area. Search for the exact target—such as Skyrim Special Edition or Fallout 4—and choose Manage.
- If Vortex does not detect the game, choose the control to locate it manually and browse to the correct installation directory or executable. Confirm that Vortex identifies the intended edition. Do not choose Skyrim when the files are for Special Edition or VR, or Fallout 4 when they are for Fallout 4 VR.
- Set or confirm Vortex’s download and mod staging folders. Downloads are the archives you obtain; the staging folder holds installed mod files before deployment.
- Where possible, keep the staging folder on the same drive as the game. Use a local folder, not a cloud-synchronized or network location, unless you understand the file-sync risks. Check that both archives and installed files will fit, and keep archives until the setup has been tested.
If Vortex reports that the staging folder and game must be on the same drive, move the staging folder or game to a suitable local location. Do not force an unusual cross-drive setup to get past the warning.

Install your first Nexus mod
- Open the mod’s Nexus page and confirm the game designation at the top. Read its description, requirements, compatibility notes, and installation instructions.
- Open the Files tab. Choose the appropriate main file, optional file, or update. A main file is usually the standard choice; optional files may be variants, patches, or alternative configurations. An update may require the main file first, while an old file may target an earlier game or mod version.
- Choose Mod Manager Download when available. Nexus describes this control and the Files-tab workflow in its download guide.
- In Vortex, wait for the archive to appear in Downloads, then select Install. If it presents a FOMOD installer, read each choice and select only options that match your game and installed dependencies.
- After installation, select Enable, then Deploy Mods or the equivalent current deployment command. Resolve warnings instead of dismissing them blindly.
- Check that Vortex shows the mod as installed and enabled, deployment has no unresolved error, and any expected plugin appears in the mod or plugin view. Then test the game.
These are separate states: downloading gets the archive, installing unpacks it into the manager’s setup, enabling selects it for use, and deployment makes enabled files available to the game. A plugin’s load order is another matter again; a successful download alone does not mean a mod is active or compatible.
Choose FOMOD options carefully
A FOMOD installer may ask about game version, texture resolution, body or animation frameworks, compatibility patches, or plugin choices. Install required dependencies first, select only the components you actually use, and follow a modlist’s specified choices when applicable. Do not select every option “just in case”: overlapping files, unsuitable patches, and unnecessary high-resolution assets can create conflicts or cost disk space. If you chose incorrectly, re-run the installer and select the right components.
Understand conflicts and load order
- Mod priority determines which mod’s loose files win when two mods provide the same file.
- Plugin load order controls the order of
.esm,.esp, and.eslplugins. - Deployment is the manager’s process for making enabled mod files available to the game.
Follow the mod author’s ordering instructions and inspect Vortex’s conflict and missing-requirement warnings. Sorting can provide a baseline, but it does not replace mod-specific rules. Use a dedicated load-order tool only when a guide or modlist calls for it. Alphabetical order is not a reliable load order.
A mod can be installed correctly and still do nothing or break another feature because it lacks a dependency, its patch loads in the wrong order, another mod overwrites a required file, or its plugin does not match the game runtime. Do not treat “installed” as proof that these separate conditions are satisfied.
Launch with the right loader
Simple mods may work when you start the game normally, but a mod that requires a script extender must be launched through that extender’s loader. Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) and Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) are separate tools; get them from their official project sites: SKSE and F4SE. Match the extender and any DLL-based plugins to the exact game runtime. “Latest” is not necessarily compatible after a Bethesda update. Follow the mod’s requirements and the extender’s current instructions, then launch through the SKSE or F4SE entry configured for your game.

Skyrim: edition, requirements, and saves
A Skyrim mod is not automatically compatible with every Skyrim edition. Original Skyrim/Legendary Edition, Special Edition, and VR have distinct compatibility considerations. Anniversary Edition content generally belongs to the Special Edition executable family, but the game’s runtime and the individual mod still matter. Check the mod page rather than inferring compatibility from a store bundle name.
Depending on the mod, requirements can include SKSE/SKSE64, Address Library, SkyUI, an unofficial patch, an animation or body framework, Nemesis or FNIS, engine fixes, or a DLL plugin tied to a specific runtime. There is no universal list to install for every player; install only the dependencies the mods you chose actually require.

Use a separate profile or disposable test save if available, and add a small group at a time. Some script-heavy mods make persistent changes; disabling or removing one does not guarantee that an existing save is restored safely. Start a new game when the mod author requires it.
Fallout 4: platform, Creations, and saves
Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox app, and Epic installations can have different directories and access restrictions, and Fallout 4 VR is a separate target. Bethesda says that with Fallout 4’s Anniversary Edition launch on November 10, 2025, the in-game Mods and Creation Club functions were combined into the Creations menu; its support page also lists platform-specific content directories. Bethesda Creations and Nexus Mods are separate distribution and management paths: the in-game Creations menu is not the Vortex workflow in this guide.
Fallout 4 mods may require F4SE, Address Library for F4SE Plugins, the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch, HUDFramework, MCM, diagnostic frameworks such as Buffout, or compatibility patches for the current runtime. Some specialized setups also need tools for BA2 archives or textures. Check the individual mod’s requirements rather than installing this list wholesale.

Bethesda says modded Fallout 4 saves are kept in a separate profile from unmodded saves: Bethesda’s save-profile guidance. A modded save may therefore not appear in the unmodded save list. Achievement behavior depends on the game, platform, version, and modding method; Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance, for example, says achievements are disabled unless otherwise specified when using Creations (source). Do not assume that one rule applies to every Fallout 4 or Nexus setup.

Manual placement is a fallback for a mod with no manager-download option, an archive Vortex cannot interpret, an author’s explicit instructions, or a tool such as a script extender with its own installation method.
- Read the author’s instructions and inspect the archive before extracting it.
- Identify whether it contains a
Datafolder, files intended for the game root, or documentation and optional folders. - Copy files to the location specified by the author; do not blindly copy the archive’s top-level folder. Putting a
Datafolder inside the game’sDatafolder can produce the incorrectGameDataData...structure instead ofGameData.... - Keep a record of every file copied manually. A script-extender loader may belong in the game root, not in
Data.
Manager installation is easier to track and remove, so prefer it when supported.
Troubleshoot common failures
Vortex does not detect the game
Confirm that the game is installed and that you selected the correct edition. Use Vortex’s manual locate option and browse to the actual installation directory or executable. For Fallout 4, account for the different Steam, Xbox app, and Epic locations Bethesda lists in its support guidance.
A Nexus download does not appear in Vortex
The browser may not have handed the download to Vortex, Vortex may not be authorized to open Nexus links, or the file may have gone to another folder. Reconnect the Nexus account if manager downloads repeatedly fail. As a fallback, download the archive manually and drag it into Vortex’s Mods area, then install it. The Nexus download guide documents the manager-download flow.

The mod is installed but has no effect
- Confirm it is enabled and deployed.
- Check its game edition and version, dependencies, and whether it requires an active plugin.
- Launch through SKSE or F4SE if required.
- Inspect file conflicts to see whether another mod overwrote it.
- Check that the archive did not create an extra folder level.
Deployment fails
Close the game and launcher, and stop other mod managers from controlling the same files. Check that the staging folder is local, on the appropriate drive, and not inside a cloud-synced folder. Retry deployment; if needed, use suitable permissions, check whether security software quarantined a file, and avoid manually editing files while Vortex manages them. An interrupted deployment can also require a retry.
The game crashes at startup
- Disable the most recently added mod and test again.
- Check its requirements and compatibility notes; confirm the game runtime matches any extender and DLL plugins.
- Look for missing masters or unresolved plugin warnings.
- Test with a new or disposable save, then re-enable mods in small groups to isolate the cause.
- Verify the game files through its storefront if the problem persists, while preserving mod archives, profiles, and error information.
The game crashes during play
Possible causes include a script or animation conflict, a missing patch, a bad asset installation, a load-order issue, removing a mod from an existing save, or a game update that invalidated an extender plugin. Test a new save where appropriate and consult the mod’s support posts before assuming the manager is at fault.
Textures, bodies, or UI are missing or broken
Check folder depth, required mesh, texture, body, skeleton, or UI frameworks, file conflicts, game-version support, and the FOMOD choices you made. Bethesda associates Fallout 4 “Lookup failed” messages with UI-changing mods and recommends removing relevant mods and verifying game files as troubleshooting steps: Bethesda’s guidance.
A game update broke the setup
An update can make mods or Creations stop working until their creators update them, as Bethesda notes in its Fallout 4 support guidance. Check the mod and extender compatibility notes for your new runtime before updating dependent tools or loading a main save.

Remove a mod with care
- Back up the save you plan to test.
- Disable the mod in Vortex and deploy the change.
- Test with a backup or disposable save before removing the mod from the profile.
- If the save becomes unstable, restore the backup or roll back to a clean save rather than continuing to play on a damaged one.
Some script-heavy mods cannot be removed safely from an established save. Bethesda warns that modded saves can be affected after mods are uninstalled and that a new game may be necessary in some cases (Bethesda troubleshooting guidance).
Quick Recap
Check this before your first modded session
- Vortex manages the exact game edition and platform installation.
- The mod page matches your edition and runtime, and its required files are installed.
