The Radeon 780M is a capable integrated GPU for esports, older games and lighter modern titles, but it is not a replacement for a gaming-laptop graphics card. It can run many demanding games at 720p to 900p with reduced settings, and supported games can gain performance from FSR. Ray tracing is supported in hardware, but its cost usually makes it a poor choice on this GPU.

One important caveat: the published multi-game results available for this topic do not identify the test system, memory, power limit or driver well enough to reproduce them. Treat the FPS figures below as reported estimates from that page—not guaranteed results for every Radeon 780M device.

What the Radeon 780M is

The Radeon 780M is an RDNA 3 integrated GPU found in processors including the Ryzen 7 7840U and several Ryzen 7040- and 8040-series models. On AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U specification, it has 12 graphics cores and a listed graphics frequency of 2.7 GHz. That figure describes the GPU specification for that processor; it does not promise a particular game frame rate. AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U specifications

Unlike a discrete graphics card, the 780M has no dedicated video memory. It shares system memory with the CPU, and both processors also draw on the system’s power and cooling capacity. The Ryzen 7 7840U supports two memory channels and lists maximum speeds of DDR5-5600 or LPDDR5X-7500; the memory actually installed by a laptop or mini-PC maker may be slower or configured differently. Why the same GPU name does not mean the same performance

A 780M in a thin, quiet laptop may have less sustained power and less cooling headroom than one in a larger laptop, mini PC or handheld. Memory type and channel configuration matter, too. A benchmark is therefore a result for a complete system—not a universal score for every device carrying the Radeon 780M name.

What the available game results show

A published test page lists the following approximate results. It does not provide enough detail about the APU, device, RAM, power mode, driver, game scenes or repeated runs to establish them as reproducible measurements. Use the figures to understand the sort of performance claimed, not as a promise for a system you might buy. Published Radeon 780M game results

Game Reported at 720p Reported at 1080p Reported conditions and caveats
Cyberpunk 2077 45–55 FPS 30–38 FPS Low settings with FSR; ray tracing is generally unsuitable, according to the source.
Forza Horizon 5 60–75 FPS 45–55 FPS Medium settings at 720p and reduced settings at 1080p.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 70–85 FPS 45–60 FPS Settings and benchmark scene affect the result.
Red Dead Redemption 2 40–50 FPS 28–35 FPS Low-to-medium settings with FSR.
Fortnite 80–120 FPS 60–90 FPS Performance Mode can substantially change results.
Counter-Strike 2 80–110 FPS 55–80 FPS Map, smoke effects and CPU limits matter.
Grand Theft Auto V 80–100 FPS 55–70 FPS Older engine; settings affect performance.

These ranges lack 1% lows and frame-time data, so they cannot show whether play stayed smooth during demanding scenes. The source also discusses Starfield, The Last of Us Part I and Hogwarts Legacy, but does not clearly establish that each was benchmarked. Those titles should not be read as additional measured results.

Which resolution and settings make sense?

For demanding games, 720p is the safer starting point; on handhelds, 1280×800 is a natural target when it matches the display. At 900p, the image can look sharper while still reducing the workload compared with 1080p. Native 1080p is more realistic in esports, older releases and lighter modern games than in demanding AAA titles.

  • 720p: A practical starting resolution for demanding games when maintaining playable performance matters most.
  • 800p: A useful handheld target on a 1280×800 screen; a 1080p render is not automatically desirable on a small display.
  • 900p: A compromise worth trying before resorting to the most aggressive upscaling mode.
  • 1080p: Best reserved for games the system handles comfortably, or paired with lower settings and a supported upscaler.

Reducing resolution means fewer pixels for the GPU to render, easing pressure on both its processing capacity and shared-memory bandwidth. If an external monitor is attached, set the game’s rendering resolution deliberately: the monitor’s output resolution does not require the game to render at that same resolution.

What FSR changes—and what it does not

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is integrated into supported games; it is not a universal switch that works in every title. Availability and behavior depend on the game and the FSR version it implements. Check the game’s graphics menu and AMD’s FSR documentation rather than assuming all versions or features work on every Radeon product.

Choosing an FSR mode

  • Start with native rendering: Establish how the game performs without upscaling so you know what FSR is improving.
  • Try Quality first: It is a sensible initial compromise at 900p or 1080p when available.
  • Use Balanced or Performance only as needed: More aggressive upscaling can improve apparent frame rate, but may make the image softer or less stable. Performance mode is especially likely to show image-quality compromises at 1080p.
  • Identify the implementation: FSR 1, FSR 2, FSR 3 and frame generation are not interchangeable. Record the version and mode shown by the particular game.

Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an output image. It can improve performance in a supported title, but does not give the 780M the memory bandwidth or sustained power of a discrete GPU. Frame generation, where available, can increase displayed frame rate without removing base-rendering latency; a high displayed number alone does not establish responsive controls or smooth frame pacing.

FSR versus Radeon Super Resolution

AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-level option, unlike game-integrated FSR. AMD recommends a game’s own FSR implementation when available because it can use game-specific integration. RSR is a fallback to consider when a game lacks native FSR and the system meets AMD’s requirements. AMD Radeon Super Resolution AMD’s RSR guidance

Ray tracing: supported, but usually not worthwhile

Hardware support for ray-tracing workloads is not the same as a good ray-traced gaming experience. The 780M’s limited graphics throughput and shared-memory bandwidth make demanding ray-traced effects costly. In many games, turning them on will reduce performance and can worsen frame-time consistency enough to undermine playability. The available results do not provide a controlled, game-by-game comparison of ray tracing on and off, so no exact performance penalty can be stated.

  • L2, R2 changed to linear analog trigger buttons, accurately simulating key responses under different pressur es, accurately performing shooting, acceleration, and other operations, and experiencing dynamic changes in the game more realistically

If you want to assess ray tracing on a particular device, compare the same repeatable scene with RT off and with one low-level RT effect enabled. Keep resolution and other settings constant, then check average frame rate and 1% lows. Add a supported FSR mode as a separate comparison rather than treating it as part of the RT result. This distinguishes what ray tracing costs from what upscaling recovers.

What to check before buying a 780M system

Since a GPU name alone does not establish performance, inspect the complete device configuration and its gaming-mode specifications. A useful product listing or manufacturer response should answer the following:

  • Processor and GPU: Confirm the exact APU model and that it includes Radeon 780M graphics.
  • Memory: Check capacity, DDR5 or LPDDR5X type, speed and channel configuration. Avoid assuming that two devices with the same RAM capacity have the same bandwidth.
  • Power profile: Find the configured power modes and whether the quoted performance applies on AC power, battery, or both.
  • Cooling and sustained load: A short burst is not the same as performance maintained through a long gaming session.
  • Upgradeability: LPDDR memory is often soldered. Confirm whether it can be replaced or expanded before purchase.
  • Display: Consider the panel’s native resolution and whether 720p, 800p or 900p is an acceptable in-game target.

System RAM is shared, so a 16 GB configuration does not provide 16 GB of dedicated video memory: Windows and the CPU also use the pool. Capacity matters for the operating system, games and multitasking, while memory bandwidth is particularly important to the iGPU’s rendering throughput.

How to interpret comparisons with other GPUs

The published page claims the 780M can exceed Vega 8 by roughly 60–100% and Radeon 680M by roughly 10–25% in some configurations. It also describes competition with some low-power MX-series GPUs and a disadvantage against GTX 1650, RTX 2050 and RTX 3050 Laptop GPUs. Those are broad contextual claims from a source without enough test detail to establish fixed margins or a universal ranking. Published Radeon 780M comparisons

For a useful comparison, match the game, resolution, settings, memory configuration and power conditions as closely as possible. A discrete GPU generally has dedicated VRAM and can draw on a larger sustained power budget; that makes it a stronger fit for demanding 1080p gaming, high-resolution textures and ray tracing. But an unmatched chart—such as a low-power 780M against a much higher-power discrete GPU—cannot tell you how much of the difference comes from the graphics architecture alone.

Who should choose it?

A good fit

  • Players whose libraries center on esports, indie games, older releases and well-optimized titles.
  • Buyers who value portability, a compact system or avoiding a separate graphics card.
  • Handheld users comfortable with an 800p target, lower settings and sensible frame-rate caps.
  • Anyone willing to tune settings and use FSR in supported games when image quality remains acceptable.

Look for a discrete GPU instead

  • If native 1080p at 60 FPS is a firm target in modern AAA games.
  • If ray tracing, high-resolution textures or demanding mods are central to your gaming.
  • If you need consistent performance through long sessions and do not want to reduce settings or resolution.
