When Stadia was operating, the controller paired with the device running Stadia—not directly with Stadia’s servers. You can still use an Xbox controller with compatible games and cloud-gaming services on a supported PC or mobile device.
Can you still pair an Xbox controller with Google Stadia?
No. Google says Stadia’s games, website, and app are no longer available following the shutdown of its servers on January 18, 2023. Pairing or resetting a controller cannot restore access to Stadia. Google’s Stadia shutdown notice explains the service’s status.
There are two controllers readers often mean by “Stadia controller”: an Xbox Wireless Controller used with Stadia, or Google’s own Stadia Controller. They have different post-shutdown options, covered below.
How Xbox controllers worked with Stadia
While Stadia was available, an Xbox controller could be connected to a compatible client device—such as a PC or phone—by Bluetooth or USB, depending on the controller model and the device. Stadia then received the input through the app or browser. It was not a direct connection between the Xbox controller and a Stadia account or server, and compatibility varied by device, operating system, browser or app, and controller revision.

Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Controller compatibility information lists Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, Android, and iOS, subject to device and operating-system support. That does not make Stadia available again.
Pair an Xbox controller with a supported device today
These steps connect a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller to a device. They do not provide access to Stadia; use them for a supported game or cloud-gaming service instead.
Windows PC
- Turn on the controller by holding the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- On Windows, open Bluetooth settings, choose Add device, and select the Xbox controller. The exact menu labels can vary by Windows release.
- Launch a game or service that supports a controller on your setup.
If Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable, connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable or use a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter. Microsoft’s Windows controller connection guide describes the available connection methods.

Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Turn on the controller and hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Open the device’s Bluetooth settings and select the Xbox controller.
- Open a game or supported cloud-gaming app and check that it recognizes controller input.
Controller revision, device model, operating-system version, and the app or service all affect compatibility. A supported wired connection is another option; a mobile device may require an appropriate adapter. Microsoft qualifies mobile compatibility by device and operating-system support.

What if you meant Google’s Stadia Controller?
Google’s controller had a Bluetooth conversion option for use with other devices after Stadia closed. The official conversion tool’s deadline was December 31, 2024, which has passed. A controller converted before that deadline may still connect over Bluetooth to supported devices. Google says the conversion permanently disables the controller’s proprietary Stadia Wi-Fi connection and cannot be reversed. A never-converted controller may still work over USB on compatible hardware, but Google’s official conversion tool is no longer an available route to Bluetooth mode.

Google’s support page says its compatibility testing focused on Windows 10 and 11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. Google warns that compatibility with other platforms and services was not substantially tested; results vary by hardware, and vibration may not work everywhere. The Assistant and Capture buttons no longer perform their Stadia-era functions.
Pair a Stadia Controller that was already converted
- Turn the controller off by holding the Stadia button.
- Hold the Stadia button again until the status light pulses orange. If it does not, hold Stadia and Y together for two seconds.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the target device and select the device name containing “Stadia.”
- A solid white status light indicates a successful connection. The controller may reconnect automatically to a device it has paired with before.
Google’s Stadia Controller Bluetooth and USB instructions cover pairing and compatibility details.
If the Stadia Controller is unresponsive
Google’s recovery steps are to charge it with a working charger and USB-C cable for 30 minutes; with the controller off, hold Y and then hold the Stadia button for 10 seconds; release both buttons; then hold the Stadia button for two seconds or connect the controller to power. A factory reset uses Google Assistant and Capture held together for six seconds, after which Bluetooth pairing is required again. See Google’s Stadia Controller recovery instructions.

Troubleshoot an Xbox controller that pairs but does not work
- It does not appear in Bluetooth settings: Confirm the controller supports Bluetooth; Xbox controller generations differ. Older Xbox One controllers may lack Bluetooth. Check the exact model rather than assuming every Xbox-branded controller pairs this way.
- It appears in Bluetooth but the game ignores it: The game, service, browser, or app may not support controller input on that platform. Confirm support for the specific device and service, then test a different controller-enabled game or app.
- It may be connected to another device: Disconnect it from that device, then try pairing again with the intended host.
- Buttons are mapped oddly or prompts do not match: The game or an operating-system, browser, adapter, or remapping layer may interpret the input differently. Xbox button prompts, vibration, headset audio, and Share-button functions are not guaranteed across every game and device.
- Bluetooth is unreliable: Remove the controller from the device’s Bluetooth list, toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the controller and device, and pair again. If the problem persists, try USB with a data-capable cable.
Can Xbox and Stadia controllers be used together?
When Stadia was available, Google’s Tandem Mode let a secondary controller connect by USB to a primary Stadia Controller, which sent both controllers’ inputs to the host. Google listed several Xbox controllers among the compatible secondary devices. Tandem Mode required the primary Stadia Controller to be linked wirelessly to the device over Bluetooth, supported only one secondary controller, and did not support connecting multiple secondary controllers through a USB hub or splitter. It does not revive Stadia or make this a direct Xbox-controller-to-cloud-service connection. Details are in Google’s Stadia Controller instructions.
What happens to Stadia purchases and saves?
Do not assume a Stadia game purchase, save, or progress transfers to another platform. Google said cross-progression and save transfers depended on each publisher and were not available for every title. Check with the individual publisher for the game in question; Google’s Stadia shutdown FAQ describes the publisher-dependent limitations.
Connection options at a glance
| Method | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox controller over Bluetooth | The controller and host both support Bluetooth. | Requires compatible hardware and host support. |
| Xbox controller over USB | Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable. | Requires a data-capable cable; mobile devices may need an adapter. |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter on Windows | You want Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless connection on a compatible Windows setup. | Windows-focused and unnecessary if Bluetooth or USB already works. |
| Converted Stadia Controller over Bluetooth | The controller was converted before Google’s deadline and the host supports it. | Compatibility varies; conversion permanently disables Stadia Wi-Fi. |
| Stadia Controller over USB | You have an unconverted controller or prefer a wired connection. | Wired only for an unconverted controller; support depends on the host. |
Where to use an Xbox controller instead
Use a compatible Xbox controller with Xbox consoles, supported Windows games, compatible Android or iOS games, or a cloud-gaming service that supports your specific controller and device. Before troubleshooting, confirm controller support for the service’s app or browser on the device you plan to use. If you already own a compatible controller, try Bluetooth or USB before buying another one; no accessory can restore Stadia access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect an Xbox controller directly to Chromecast for Stadia?
No. Stadia shut down on January 18, 2023. Whether an Xbox controller can be used with a particular Chromecast setup for another service depends on that device, controller, and service.
Can I still activate Bluetooth on an unconverted Stadia Controller with Google’s tool?
No. Google’s official conversion deadline was December 31, 2024. An unconverted controller may still be usable over USB on compatible hardware.
Can I use a Stadia Controller with Xbox?
Google’s documented compatibility testing does not establish general Xbox-console support. Compatibility with platforms beyond the tested examples is not guaranteed.
Can I use USB instead of Bluetooth?
Yes, where the controller, host device, and game or service support a wired connection. Use a data-capable cable; charging alone does not establish that it can carry controller input.
