Either can stop online multiplayer, but neither identifies one specific cause or proves your PS5 is faulty. First check whether PSN or the affected game is having an outage; then use the tests below to isolate the console, home network, or account.
What do WV-109153-9 and WV-109144-9 mean?

Sony’s PS5 error-code list gives these descriptions, while its WV-109153-9 troubleshooting page suggests network checks and fixes. The codes do not point to a single cause: the failure can involve PSN, a game’s own servers, Wi-Fi, a router, DNS, NAT, an ISP, or account access.
Multiplayer depends on several links working: the PS5 must reach your router and the internet, PSN features may need to authenticate your account, and the game must reach its own online services. A failure in one link can block matchmaking, invitations, or party features while other internet functions still work.
Check whether PSN or the game is down
- Open PlayStation Network status and check the services relevant to the problem, especially Account Management and Gaming and Social.
- Check the affected game’s official server-status page or service announcements. A game can be down for maintenance while PSN is available.
- If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait and try again after service is restored. Avoid changing advanced router settings during a confirmed outage.
Sony’s online-service troubleshooting guidance also directs players to check PlayStation status and the game’s website. Status pages are live and can change; a normal result does not rule out a brief or game-specific problem.

Try the low-risk fixes first
- Close the affected game and restart the PS5 normally.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Sony’s support materials also refer to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection; labels can vary with system software.
- Check whether the console is signed in to PSN. Sony’s sign-in path is Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In.
- Retry the game. If the connection still fails, restart the modem and router using the procedure below.
Restart the modem and router cleanly
- Turn off the PS5.
- Power down or unplug the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Restore power to the modem first and allow it to reconnect to your ISP.
- Restore power to the router and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet service to return.
- Restart the PS5 and run the connection test again.
The five-minute wait is part of Sony’s official guidance for WV-109153-9. A router restart briefly disconnects other devices in the home.
Use other games and connections to find the failing link
Do not rely on a speed-test result alone. Multiplayer can be disrupted by instability, packet loss, interference, or NAT behavior even when a speed test appears healthy. Compare the affected game with other PSN features and, if possible, another network.
- Only one game fails: Check that game’s server status and updates. A title-specific service, account setting, or matchmaking issue is more likely than a general PSN failure.
- Several games and PSN features fail: Investigate PSN status, the router, DNS, NAT, ISP, and account connectivity.
- The PS5 reports internet access but Store, friends, or invitations fail: The console may have partial connectivity; authentication or a particular PSN service can fail independently.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If practical, connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet and try the game again. If Ethernet works, focus on wireless placement, interference, or Wi-Fi configuration. Move the PS5 closer to the router, reduce obstacles, or try a less congested Wi-Fi band or channel. Sony also recommends improving the console’s wireless position in its connection-error guidance.

If Ethernet fails in the same way, Wi-Fi interference is less likely. Continue with service, router, DNS, NAT, ISP, and account checks.
Try a phone hotspot as a diagnostic comparison
If you can, connect the PS5 briefly to a phone hotspot and test the same online feature. If it works there but not on your home connection, the home router, ISP, DNS, NAT, or filtering becomes more suspect. A hotspot is not necessarily a good permanent gaming connection: latency, data limits, and carrier NAT can make play worse or prevent some connections.
Advanced network fixes
Try these only after checking service status, restarting equipment, and comparing connections. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can undo a change that makes no difference.

Update software and router firmware
Install available PS5 system-software and game updates. Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates. Sony includes router firmware and network reconfiguration among the possible steps for WV-109153-9.
Review NAT and double NAT
The PS5 connection test can show a NAT type. Type 2 is common on home-router connections and is generally suitable for online play. Type 3 is more restrictive and may interfere with matchmaking, party chat, or peer-to-peer connections, though it does not make every game unplayable. Type 1 is usually the least restricted but is uncommon and not a target most home users need to pursue. Games use different network designs, so a NAT label is a clue, not a diagnosis.
Double NAT can occur when an ISP gateway and a second router or mesh system both perform routing. Public Wi-Fi, school or hotel networks, carrier networks, VPNs, parental controls, filtering, and ISP restrictions can also limit game traffic. If you do not control the network, ask its administrator or provider whether gaming connections are restricted.

Try a DNS change only as a reversible test
Sony says temporarily changing DNS could help, but it is not a universal multiplayer fix and does not guarantee faster service. Before changing it, record the original setting; revert if there is no improvement. DNS menu placement can vary by connection type and system software. The path commonly used is Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > select your current network > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings. Sony does not prescribe a particular public DNS provider on its WV-109153-9 page.
Use a reserved or static local IP only when needed
A consistent local IP can help keep router port-forwarding rules pointed at the PS5. Many households do not need to set one. A manually chosen address that conflicts with the router’s DHCP range can create new connectivity problems; a DHCP reservation in the router is often simpler, though the steps depend on the router.
Consider port forwarding with router or ISP help
Sony lists these ports as a possible troubleshooting measure, not a requirement for every PS5:

Forwarding rules depend on the router, network setup, and game. The broad UDP range can be misconfigured or expose more traffic than intended, so get help from the router manufacturer or ISP and try simpler fixes first. Do not put the PS5 in a DMZ as a routine shortcut; port forwarding cannot repair a PSN-wide outage.

PlayStation Plus
Some paid games require an eligible PlayStation Plus plan for online multiplayer; many free-to-play games do not, subject to each game’s and account’s rules. A missing subscription is not what these generic WV codes establish. If the game requires a plan, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions or your PlayStation account page. Do not buy a subscription solely because one of these codes appeared.
Game licenses and updates
If PSN works but one purchased game cannot validate access or start, check the game and console for updates, confirm you are signed in to the purchasing account, and review the game’s entitlement. For an appropriate license issue, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony recommends this for some license-confirmation problems, such as those described on its CE-109258-5 support page; it is not the primary fix for a generic network timeout.
Account or console suspension
A suspension can block online multiplayer or other PlayStation features, but it is separate from an ordinary connection failure. Sony says affected users generally receive an email or see an error when trying to sign in. Check the email address associated with the account and Sony’s suspension information. Do not assume a suspension if sign-in and other PSN features work normally.

When to contact PlayStation or your internet provider
- Contact PlayStation Support if PSN status is normal but the console still cannot sign in, the same problem follows the PS5 across different networks, or you suspect an account or console suspension. Sony’s support page provides the contact route.
- Contact your ISP or router manufacturer if Ethernet and Wi-Fi both show instability, other household services are affected, or you need help with double NAT, firmware, reservations, or port rules.
- Contact the game publisher if PSN and other games work but one title’s servers or matchmaking remain unavailable.
A factory reset is disproportionate for these generic connection codes and risks data loss. Reinstalling a game is also not a sensible first step unless there is evidence of a damaged installation or failed update.
