If you like XCOM or Fire Emblem, there are more ways into tactics games than picking another squad-and-cover campaign. Recent releases include a new mercenary-squad game and a return to a classic tactical RPG, while puzzle-first and stealth-focused games offer very different battles. “Never been a better time” works as an enthusiastic hook—not a provable historical ranking—but the range of current options makes the case for trying the genre.

First, choose the kind of tactics game you want

“Tactics game” can describe a short encounter built like a puzzle, a campaign about managing a squad, or a story-rich RPG where battles are one part of a larger journey. The most useful way to choose is to consider the rhythm you want: how long battles last, what happens between them, and whether the appeal is combat, story, or managing a team.

If you want… Try… What distinguishes it
Compact tactical puzzles Into the Breach; Tactical Breach Wizards Into the Breach reveals what enemies intend to do next; Tactical Breach Wizards emphasizes puzzle-like solutions to encounters. SteamVault’s 2026 tactics roundup describes both approaches.
Mercenary squads and a campaign Warhounds; Jagged Alliance 3 Both center on mercenary squads and turn-based combat. Jagged Alliance 3 also puts campaign management—such as paying, training, and keeping mercenaries alive—alongside the battles, according to PC Gamer.
Story, jobs, and character growth FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles; Fire Emblem: Three Houses The Ivalice Chronicles pairs tactical positioning with customizable jobs and abilities; Three Houses is a story-led tactical RPG with grid battles and an undo mechanic, as described by GamesRadar.
A tactical challenge that is not a firefight Invisible, Inc. It turns the problem toward stealth and hacking, with a countdown, rather than a conventional gun battle, according to SteamVault.

This is a guide to design differences, not an exhaustive ranking. Check the relevant platform store for current availability before choosing a game.

For an XCOM-like squad: compare the battles and the campaign

Warhounds: a recent mercenary-squad release

Steam lists The First Studios’ Warhounds, published by Brightika, Inc., as released on 11 August 2026. It describes a turn-based mercenary-squad campaign in an alternate-future Africa, built around calculating lines of fire and flanking angles, breaking cover, and taking high ground. The store description says planning matters more than random-number generation; treat that as the publisher’s positioning, not an independent assessment. See the Warhounds Steam listing.

Jagged Alliance 3: battles plus mercenary management

If you want choices between fights to matter, Jagged Alliance 3 adds the obligations of running a mercenary operation. PC Gamer describes paying and training mercenaries and trying to keep them alive as part of the experience, alongside turn-based tactical encounters. That management layer makes it a different proposition from a game focused chiefly on solving one battle at a time. PC Gamer’s Jagged Alliance 3 review.

For a story-rich tactical RPG: look at jobs, terrain, and recovery options

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles

Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles was released on 30 September 2025, according to its Steam listing. It combines voiced dialogue and enhanced graphics with tactical battles on 3D terrain, where positioning and turn order matter. Its job-and-ability customization gives character development a prominent place alongside combat. GameSpot describes its story as following Ramza Beoulve through political conflict. For shorter, puzzle-shaped battles—or a different kind of pressure

Into the Breach

Rather than hiding enemy plans, Into the Breach shows what enemies are about to do. That makes each encounter a compact problem of preventing or redirecting damage, rather than simply trying to hit the opponent first. SteamVault highlights that visible-intention design in its 2026 roundup of turn-based tactics games.

Tactical Breach Wizards

Tactical Breach Wizards is another fit if you prefer finding a clever answer to a self-contained encounter over investing in a long campaign. SteamVault characterizes its fights as small tactical puzzles. SteamVault’s roundup.

Use these questions to narrow your shortlist

  • Do you want one encounter at a time or a campaign? Puzzle-led games foreground solutions within a battle; mercenary games can make team upkeep and decisions between battles part of the challenge.
  • What should progression feel like? Consider whether you want to customize jobs and abilities, develop a cast of characters, or manage the condition and finances of a squad.
  • What kind of tactical pressure sounds fun? It might be terrain and lines of fire, visible enemy intentions, stealth and a countdown, or turn order and character abilities.
  • How much story do you want? A story-rich tactical RPG may devote substantial time to characters and political conflict outside combat; a puzzle-first game puts more emphasis on encounter-by-encounter problem-solving.
  • What can you play it on? Verify the edition and current regional store listing for your system before buying; platform availability is not uniform across these examples.

There is no reliable shared difficulty scale across these games, so the sources do not support ranking them from easiest to hardest. Choose by the kind of problem and campaign you want, rather than assuming that every game labeled “tactics” will feel like XCOM.

Why the genre is worth a look now

A discussion titled “Looking for turn based tactical games like XCOM or Fire Emblem” reflects how many players use familiar series as a starting point, while commenters also mention Final Fantasy Tactics, Into the Breach, Tactics Ogre, Triangle Strategy, and Jagged Alliance 3. That is one community conversation, not evidence of overall popularity. Read the r/StrategyRPG discussion.

The stronger case for the headline is variety, not a measurable claim that this is the best moment in the genre’s history: a 2026 mercenary-squad release, a 2025 return to Final Fantasy Tactics, and distinct puzzle, story, stealth, and campaign-management approaches give newcomers multiple ways to find their preferred kind of tactical play.
