PicoCart64 is an open-source, do-it-yourself flash-cart project that uses a Raspberry Pi Pico or another RP2040-based board to load software on an original Nintendo 64. The practical starting point is the single-board v1 lite; the RP2040 Stamp design is experimental, while v2 adds features but remains heavily under development.
What PicoCart64 does—and what it does not do
PicoCart64 uses a Raspberry Pi Pico or other RP2040 hardware as the memory controller in a cartridge that plugs into an N64. The game runs on the original console; the Pico is not emulating an N64 or turning into a standalone game system. The project was created by Konrad Beckmann, who explored whether a Pico could replace the FPGA hardware used by many commercial flash carts.
In the documented workflow, a ROM image is turned into a UF2 file and loaded onto the Pico. The board then supplies the cartridge data when the N64 starts. The v1 lite design is aimed at booting homebrew and small ROM images, rather than serving as a high-capacity library cart.
How the PicoCart64 versions compare
| Design | Controller and memory | Capacity information | Features and maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| v1 lite | One Raspberry Pi Pico or compatible RP2040 board; standard Pico has 2MB of flash. | Project documentation describes homebrew and small ROM images. It does not state a single maximum ROM size for the standard build. | README calls it the most user-friendly option; practical entry point. |
| v1 stamp | Experimental development platform based on a Solder Party RP2040 Stamp; memory capacity is not stated in the project README. | Not stated in the project README. | Experimental; not presented as the main beginner build. |
| v2 | Two RP2040 chips and onboard PSRAM; the README describes ROM support up to 64MB. | Up to 64MB, as stated for the developmental design in the project README. | Wi-Fi and SD-card support; README says it is still heavily under development. |
The 2MB figure is the standard Raspberry Pi Pico’s onboard flash capacity, not a promise that a game of exactly that size will fit. Firmware and the ROM-building process also use board storage. If more flash is needed for a v1-style build, the project README points to a WeAct RP2040-compatible board with 16MB of flash.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What you need to build the v1 lite
The project provides a PCB design and a compact bill of materials. You can obtain an unpopulated PicoCart64 Lite v1.4 PCB through Solder Party or download the Gerber manufacturing files from the project’s develop branch and have a board fabricated. Stock, current pricing, and availability can change.
- A Raspberry Pi Pico, or a compatible RP2040 board appropriate to the amount of flash you need.
- A PicoCart64 Lite v1.4 PCB.
- A BSS84 MOSFET.
- An optional 0603 100k resistor, as listed in the v1 lite bill of materials.
Board dimensions matter: the PCB should be 1.2mm thick to fit the N64 cartridge slot. If a fabricated board has a raw 90-degree edge, sand it to a 45-degree chamfer. The project warns that an unchamfered edge can wear the console connector. Check the project’s current build files and README for the complete assembly details before soldering; the brief parts list above is not a substitute for the board files.

When the RP2040 Stamp makes sense
The v1 stamp is a separate experimental platform built around Solder Party’s RP2040 Stamp, not a required component for the v1 lite. Choose it only if you specifically want to work with that development design and are prepared for an experimental build.
Why v2 is not the easy upgrade
V2’s two-chip design, PSRAM, Wi-Fi, and SD-card support are more ambitious than the v1 lite, but the project README still labels it heavily under development. Its stated 64MB ROM support belongs to that developmental configuration; it should not be assumed to describe a finished, plug-and-play cart.

How to prepare and flash a ROM
The official UF2 ROM Builder workflow uses a console-region firmware choice and a z64-format ROM. Build and flash the cartridge before putting it in the console:
- Choose the firmware region. In the official UF2 ROM Builder, select NTSC or PAL to match the N64 you intend to use.
- Provide the ROM. Select a z64-format ROM image. Use homebrew or game data you are entitled to use.
- Set compression. Leave compression enabled unless you have a specific reason to disable it.
- Build the UF2. Generate the UF2 file using the ROM Builder.
- Put the Pico in BOOTSEL mode. Connect it to a computer in BOOTSEL mode, then copy the generated UF2 to the Pico as instructed by the builder.
- Power-cycle before starting the console. Once flashing is complete, disconnect or power-cycle the board before starting the N64.
Region selection is part of the firmware-building step; do not assume one build will be correct for both PAL and NTSC consoles. If a game does not boot, first confirm the ROM format, firmware region, completed UF2 copy, and power-cycle sequence.

What the 2024 stable release’s 133MHz label means
The project’s release page records a stable release dated 2024-10-31. Its 133MHz variant does not overclock the RP2040: flash is read at 66.5MHz, and the N64 bus uses a slower-latency configuration. The release notes also say the SRAM test is expected to fail in that variant, so that test result alone is not evidence of a bad build when using it.
Because PicoCart64 development continues, verify compatibility and any later firmware changes against the project’s release information rather than assuming that the 2024 release notes describe every current build.
