The Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink fits within Sony’s published PS5 M.2 size limits: Samsung lists maximum dimensions of 80.15 × 25 × 8.88 mm, while Sony permits an SSD and cooling structure up to 110 mm long, 25 mm wide, and 11.25 mm thick overall. Check the exact capacity and regional SKU you have, and do not force the expansion-slot cover closed.
Check the 990 PRO’s PS5 compatibility and clearance
Sony’s PS5 M.2 requirements call for a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive with an M Key connector. Supported capacities run from 250 GB to 8 TB; supported form factors include 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. The drive may be single- or double-sided, but M.2 SATA drives are not supported. Sony recommends sequential read speeds of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. See PlayStation’s M.2 SSD compatibility and installation guidance.
Samsung identifies the 990 PRO with Heatsink as PCIe 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, and M.2 2280, and lists PlayStation 5 among its applications. Samsung rates sequential read speed at up to 7,450 MB/s, above Sony’s recommendation. That is a manufacturer specification, not a PS5 test result or a promise that games will load exactly like they do from the console’s internal SSD. See the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink specifications.
Compare the published dimensions
| Measurement | PS5 maximum | 990 PRO with Heatsink maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 110 mm (Sony) | 80.15 mm (Samsung datasheet) |
| Width | 25 mm (Sony) | 25 mm (Samsung datasheet) |
| Total thickness | 11.25 mm (Sony) | 8.88 mm (Samsung datasheet) |
Sony’s thickness allowance includes up to 8.0 mm above and 2.45 mm below the SSD board. The 990 PRO’s listed maximum width meets—not falls below—the 25 mm limit. Samsung Canada lists 80 × 24.3 × 8.2 mm for its 2 TB model, so dimensions can differ between product listings and the datasheet. Use the more conservative datasheet figures above for the comparison, then verify the exact SKU and capacity on your package or regional product page. Sony’s dimensional guidance is at PlayStation Support; the separate 2 TB listing is on Samsung Canada’s product page.

Published dimensions indicate that the heatsink version is inside Sony’s limits, but Sony does not guarantee that every third-party M.2 drive meeting those specifications will work. Its practical check is the slot cover: PlayStation Support says, “If the expansion slot cover doesn’t close properly, your cooling structure probably exceeds the size requirements.” Treat an imperfect fit as a stop signal, not a reason to press harder.
Choose the correct 990 PRO variant
Samsung sells the 990 PRO both with and without an integrated heatsink. The with-heatsink version already has a cooling structure, so it is the simpler installation choice. A bare 990 PRO still needs a compatible cooling structure that fits within Sony’s limits; a generic aftermarket cooler is not guaranteed to fit. Do not install an aftermarket cooler on top of the integrated heatsink. Confirm the capacity, heatsink version, and regional SKU before opening the console.

Install the SSD in the PS5
Outer-cover removal differs among PS5 models. Follow Sony’s instructions for your exact console model rather than relying on a cover-removal sequence for a different chassis. The M.2 installation proceeds as follows:
- Update the PS5 system software. Shut the console down completely, unplug it, and let it cool before opening it.
- Remove the console cover using the instructions for your model, then remove the expansion-slot cover.
- Remove the retaining screw and spacer from the slot. Place the spacer in the 2280 position.
- Hold the SSD by its edges. Align its connector notch with the slot, then insert it diagonally upward until it is fully seated.
- Lower the SSD onto the spacer and secure it with the screw. Check that the board lies level and the heatsink does not block the screw.
- Refit the expansion-slot cover and its screw, then replace the console cover and reconnect the console.
- Turn on the PS5 and follow the on-screen M.2 format guide.
Sony’s step-by-step instructions and model-specific cover guidance are on its M.2 SSD installation page.

Check the fit before using the drive
- The SSD board should sit level on the 2280 spacer, with the retaining screw accessible and secure.
- The expansion-slot cover should close and sit correctly without pressure. If it does not, stop and check the drive’s orientation, heatsink clearance, and exact model dimensions. Do not force the cover into place.
- Use an M.2 drive with an effective cooling structure. Sony warns that a drive without one can overheat and that continued use may cause operating failure.
Format the drive and understand the performance limit
On first startup, the PS5 prompts you to format the new M.2 SSD. Formatting erases all data on that drive, so use a new drive or back up anything you need before proceeding. Do not turn off the console while it is formatting or saving data.
Meeting Sony’s compatibility and speed recommendations does not guarantee that every game will perform identically to one installed on the internal SSD. The 7,450 MB/s figure is Samsung’s rated sequential read speed; it should not be read as a measured PS5 result.
