Check SteamStat.us and SteamDB’s server-status page for current service indicators.
Is Steam down right now?
The information available for this report does not verify a live Steam outage on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, or an official Valve maintenance notice for that date. The status reading retrieved before August 18 was already a week old, so it cannot settle what users were seeing that Tuesday. Check current service indicators before treating the issue as a platform-wide outage.
Steam is not a single service that fails all at once. The Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers, client login and individual game coordinators can have different statuses. SteamStat.us is an unofficial tracker that separates several of these categories; SteamDB’s status page also distinguishes platform and game-related services.
Why Tuesday maintenance is a plausible explanation
Independent Steam-status guidance describes recurring maintenance on Tuesdays, commonly around 7 p.m. Eastern Time, or 11 p.m. UTC. This is an observed third-party estimate, not a published Valve timetable; local time and daylight-saving changes affect the conversion. A Tuesday interruption may fit the usual pattern, but the day alone does not confirm either that Steam is down or that maintenance is the cause. Services may be interrupted differently or at different times. Some users might have trouble opening the Store or signing in while others remain in a game. A regional connection problem or a game-specific failure can also resemble a Steam outage.
What may be affected
Symptoms help narrow down which service is having trouble; they do not, by themselves, prove the cause.
- Store: pages may load slowly, fail to open or appear blank.
- Login and Connection Managers: the client may remain at “Connecting,” get stuck checking for updates or reject a login attempt.
- Community: profiles, friends lists and Community pages may fail while other Steam features work.
- Downloads and updates: downloads may pause or report connection errors. Cloud synchronization may also remain pending.
- Game services: matchmaking, inventories, achievements or a game coordinator may fail even if the game itself launches.
Many game-session servers are operated by the game’s developer or publisher rather than Valve. A Steam service problem can disrupt authentication or Steam-dependent features without taking every game server offline. Conversely, a title may be unavailable because its own publisher-run service is having trouble. SteamDB’s server-status explainer describes this distinction.
How long does Tuesday maintenance last?
SteamDB’s third-party guidance estimates that routine interruptions often last roughly 15–30 minutes. That is a typical estimate, not a Valve service guarantee or a prediction for a specific outage. Valve has not published a guaranteed restoration time in the status information available here, so a longer interruption may indicate an unexpected incident or another cause. Can you keep playing?
When offline mode may work
Offline mode can help with some installed, offline-capable single-player games, particularly if Steam has already authenticated the game on that device and any required update is installed. To try it, open Steam’s top-left Steam menu, choose Go Offline, then confirm and restart in offline mode if prompted.
When it will not help
Offline mode does not restore multiplayer, Steam Community, Store purchases or cloud saves. It may not work if a game requires online authentication, depends on a live-service backend, has not previously been authenticated on the device, needs an update, or has a cloud-save synchronization pending. SteamDB’s outage guidance likewise treats offline mode as a limited option, not a universal fix.

What to do if Steam will not connect
- Check whether the problem is local. Open another website or service. If those fail too, investigate your internet connection before assuming Steam is responsible.
- Compare the client with a browser. Try opening Steam in a browser as well as in the desktop client. A difference can help identify a client-specific problem, though it does not establish the cause.
- Check separate status indicators. Review SteamStat.us and SteamDB’s status page. User reports can help reveal a pattern, but are not proof of its cause.
- Protect game saves before restarting. Do not close a game while it may still be saving or synchronizing. Once it is safe to do so, restarting the Steam client is a reasonable basic check.
- Change download region only for a download problem. SteamDB recommends trying another download region or clearing the download cache as troubleshooting options. These address possible client or download issues; they do not repair a platform-wide outage.
- Avoid destructive fixes during a short interruption. Do not delete Steam folders or local saves, reinstall Steam, repeatedly submit passwords or payment details, use unofficial repair downloads, or permanently disable security software.
SteamDB also lists checking the internet connection and restarting Steam among basic troubleshooting steps. Its status guidance includes the download-region, cache and offline-mode options.

An issue outside Tuesday’s commonly reported window, a failure limited to one game, or a problem confined to one region or internet provider points away from a broad scheduled interruption. If platform trackers show normal services while one title remains unavailable, check that game’s own service status. Regional Connection Managers can also differ, so a local problem does not necessarily indicate a global outage; SteamStat.us shows regional connection information.

A longer outage or unusual purchase and authentication errors also merit caution rather than assumptions. For comparison, a July 9, 2026 incident occurred on a Thursday; PC Gamer reported “too many requests” errors affecting the Store and Community while matchmaking remained operational. That example illustrates why a Steam problem should be assessed by date and service, not automatically labeled Tuesday maintenance. PC Gamer’s report covers that incident.
