ASUS demonstrated its BTF 2.5 GC-HPWR connector carrying more than 1,900 watts on a test setup, with the connector reported at about 39–41°C. That is evidence of substantial thermal headroom in that demonstration—not a claim that a stock RTX 5090 draws 1,900W in games, or proof that BTF is universally safer or longer-lived than conventional 16-pin connectors.
What happened in the 1,900W test?
ASUS China general manager Tony Yu demonstrated the BTF 2.5 revision of ASUS’s GC-HPWR hidden power interface using a test board or PCB, not a retail graphics card rendering a game. Reports describe the load being raised in stages—around 680W, 1,300W and then 1,900W. At the highest reported stage, the connector remained near 39–41°C, while the test wires exceeded 70°C, according to HotHardware and Tom’s Hardware. VideoCardz reports the connector temperature at roughly 39–41°C at that peak stage.

VideoCardz also reports a separate demonstration involving two power supplies that exceeded 2,600W. That is a different test and should not be confused with the staged 1,900W result.
What the demonstration does—and does not—show
The useful takeaway is about the connector interface under the demonstrated load: its contact area reportedly stayed near 40°C even as the wires became substantially hotter. This supports the limited conclusion that ASUS’s GC-HPWR handled that particular stress demonstration without the connector heating seen in some reported plastic-connector failures.

It does not establish long-term reliability, a lifetime advantage, independent safety certification, or that conventional plastic 16-pin connectors are inherently unsafe. The cited coverage does not report an independent laboratory certification or a long-duration cycle-life test. Nor does the demonstration describe ordinary RTX 5090 gaming power draw: it used a test setup rather than a stock card running a game.
How ASUS BTF 2.5 works
ASUS BTF moves power and other connections to the back of the motherboard to reduce visible cabling. For graphics cards, the relevant power interface is GC-HPWR, a gold-finger connector that mates with a compatible motherboard slot.
ASUS’s support guidance distinguishes the card generations. A BTF 2.0 graphics card uses a GC-HPWR gold finger and has no card-side 16-pin socket. A BTF 2.5 card has a detachable GC-HPWR interface as well as a conventional 16-pin connector. On a compatible BTF 2.5 motherboard, the gold finger connects to the board and the PSU’s 16-pin cable plugs into a connector at the rear of the motherboard. ASUS says the motherboard GC-HPWR interface can supply up to 600W. On a standard motherboard, the BTF 2.5 card can instead use its 16-pin connector after the detachable GC-HPWR piece is removed. See ASUS’s BTF support guidance for its compatibility explanation.

The retail card behind the headline
The product is the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7 BTF OC Edition, model ROG-ASTRAL-RTX5090-O32G-BTF-GAMING. ASUS lists 32GB of GDDR7 memory, PCIe 5.0, a 3.8-slot design, one 16-pin GC-HPWR gold-finger connection and a recommended 1000W power supply. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or reliability measurements. The full specification is on ASUS’s product page.
What the result means if you are choosing a setup
BTF 2.5 is primarily a different connector and cable-routing option, not a guarantee of greater real-world reliability. A compatible BTF motherboard enables the hidden connection and cleaner front-side appearance; the card’s detachable interface and conventional 16-pin option also give it a path to use with a standard motherboard. A conventional installation avoids the BTF motherboard requirement, while leaving the 16-pin cable connection at the graphics card.
The 1,900W demonstration is evidence of performance in one connector stress test, not a standardized comparison against a conventional 12V-2×6 installation. The available reports do not provide comparable retail pricing or long-term service-life measurements. For a purchase decision, treat the 1000W recommendation as ASUS’s stated system-power guidance for this card, and check motherboard compatibility and physical clearance before choosing a BTF build.
