If your Windows 10 PC reboots while you play, there is no single fix: an instant black-screen restart points first toward power delivery, heat, or hardware stability, while a blue screen may leave a stop code or driver clue. Start by identifying exactly what happens, then check Windows logs and test one likely cause at a time. Kernel-Power Event ID 41 confirms an unclean restart; by itself, it does not prove the power supply is faulty.

First, identify what kind of failure you have

“Restarts while gaming” can describe several different problems, and they need different tests. Note what the screen, sound, and power do, whether Windows returns by itself, and whether the fault happens in one game or several.

What you see What to investigate first
Instant black screen, then reboot with no visible blue screen Power delivery, GPU, overheating, or another hardware-stability problem; also check whether Windows hid a stop error.
A blue screen appears briefly, then the PC restarts Stop-error code, driver, RAM, storage, or Windows corruption.
The game closes but Windows stays running Game files, graphics driver, overlay, anti-cheat, or another software conflict.
Image freezes, audio loops, then the PC reboots GPU, RAM, CPU, PSU, motherboard, or general system stability.
PC powers off and stays off until you press the power button Thermal protection, PSU protection, power path, or motherboard.
Only one game causes it Game patch, anti-cheat, configuration, shader compilation, or a workload that exposes an underlying system weakness.
Several demanding games cause it System-wide power, thermal, hardware, or stability trouble is more likely.
It happens after a similar amount of time Heat buildup or cooling saturation; a repeatable software fault is also possible.
It happens in menus or uncapped scenes Sudden GPU load or power changes, graphics-driver trouble, or power delivery.

A game can expose instability that never appears during browsing or other light use. That does not, by itself, mean the game is defective.

Before testing, make the system safer and easier to diagnose

  • Save important work and avoid repeatedly provoking hard shutdowns. Stop if you notice a burning smell, damaged or discolored cable, electrical clicking, visible arcing, or liquid damage.
  • Temporarily return CPU, GPU, and memory settings to stock: remove overclocks and undervolts, disable XMP or other manually tuned memory profiles, and turn off motherboard automatic overclocking. Microsoft includes disabling overclocking, checking memory, and verifying PSU capacity among its Event ID 41 troubleshooting steps (Microsoft Learn: Event ID 41).
  • Check that fans spin, vents are clear, and visible power connectors are fully seated. Do not open a power supply.
  • Write down when the issue began and any recent changes, such as a driver, BIOS, game, RAM, GPU, or power-supply change. Change one thing at a time so the result remains meaningful.

Check whether Windows recorded a blue screen

Windows may restart automatically after a stop error, leaving you with the impression that the PC simply reset. Temporarily disable automatic restart to see whether a stop code appears:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Open Advanced. Under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
  3. Clear Automatically restart. In the same window, ensure a memory dump option is enabled; Small memory dump or Automatic memory dump is suitable for diagnosis.
  4. Reproduce the problem only if there are no signs of electrical damage or dangerous overheating. If a blue screen appears, record its exact stop code and any named driver.

A driver named on a blue screen is not automatically the root cause; unstable RAM, GPU hardware, or power can produce failures that surface through a driver. Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance recommends investigating system logs and stop-error evidence rather than relying on a guess.

Read the events around the restart

  1. Right-click Start and choose Event Viewer.
  2. Open Windows Logs > System, then choose Filter Current Log.
  3. Filter for Critical, Error, and Warning, then inspect entries immediately before and after the restart.
  4. Look for BugCheck or WER-SystemErrorReporting entries, WHEA-Logger hardware errors, display-driver events, and planned-restart records as well as Kernel-Power.
  • Kernel-Power, Event ID 41: Windows detected that the previous shutdown was not clean. It may follow power loss, a hang, a stop error, forced shutdown, or hardware instability; it does not identify the cause on its own.
  • Event ID 6008: records that the previous shutdown was unexpected. It also does not identify the failed part.
  • BugCheck or WER-SystemErrorReporting: can show that Windows recorded a stop error.
  • WHEA-Logger: may record corrected or uncorrected hardware errors. The event details matter; an entry is a lead to investigate, not an automatic diagnosis.
  • Display-driver events: can point toward the graphics driver or graphics subsystem.
  • Event ID 1074: can identify a planned restart initiated by a user, process, update, or application.

Microsoft recommends reviewing surrounding system events instead of treating Event 41 as a diagnosis (Troubleshoot unexpected reboots using system event logs). Check C:WindowsMinidump and C:WindowsMEMORY.DMP for crash dumps. A nonzero bug-check code in Event 41 together with a matching dump supports a stop-error explanation. Zero values and no dump after an instant reboot make power interruption or a hard lockup more plausible, but still do not prove either.

Check cooling under load, not just at idle

Use a monitoring tool to watch temperatures and fan behavior while reproducing the problem. Record CPU package temperature, GPU core temperature, and, if available, GPU hotspot or junction and VRAM temperatures. Watch clocks and fan speeds as well as peak readings, and note whether temperatures rise steadily just before failure.

There is no single safe temperature threshold that applies to every processor, graphics card, laptop, and firmware setting. Compare readings with the limit documented for the actual component, and look for a consistent relationship between rising temperatures, abnormal throttling, and the restart.

  • Remove dust from filters, heatsinks, and fans; confirm all fans spin.
  • Check that the CPU cooler is firmly mounted and the graphics card is seated and supported.
  • For a laptop, use a hard surface, keep vents clear, and use the intended charger. Do not open a sealed cooling system without model-specific instructions.
  • On a desktop, temporarily removing the side panel can help test whether restricted case airflow matters, but it is not a permanent cooling solution.

Inspect the power path before buying a PSU

Gaming raises CPU and GPU demand, so a weak, aging, defective, or poorly connected power path may fail only under load. Check the PSU label and model against the graphics-card maker’s recommendation and the requirements of the complete system. Age and quality matter too; a wattage calculator estimates capacity, not whether a PSU is healthy. Seasonic describes its wattage calculator result as a minimum recommendation for stability under load, not as a hardware test.

  • With the PC powered off and unplugged, check that the 24-pin motherboard, CPU EPS, and GPU power connectors are fully inserted. Look for damage, looseness, discoloration, or heat marks.
  • For a demanding GPU, follow the PSU and GPU manuals on using separate PCIe cables. Never mix modular cables from different PSU brands or models, even if the plugs fit.
  • Avoid questionable adapters and overloaded power strips. If practical, test another wall outlet or circuit; if using a UPS, confirm it is rated and compatible with the system load.
  • Do not open the PSU. If it is suspected, a known-good, correctly rated unit or professional electrical testing is safer than an improvised test.

For laptop gaming, check that the adapter is the intended model and supplies the required power; a dock or USB-C power source may not provide enough for gaming. Battery or charging faults and performance modes can also affect sustained load.

Update or roll back graphics and chipset drivers deliberately

If the restarts began after a driver or game update, preserve that timeline. Install a stable graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer, or test the previous known-good version if the problem began immediately after an update. Use the installer’s clean-install option when available. A normal reinstall is a reasonable first step; a third-party driver-cleanup utility is not mandatory and should be used only with care.

Temporarily disable overlays and tuning hooks—such as Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce or Radeon overlays, RGB and motherboard utilities, frame-rate limiters, and overclocking tools—then retest. Update chipset and motherboard drivers from the PC or board maker. Update BIOS only when there is a documented stability or compatibility reason, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, including recovery guidance.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands finish and retest. If SFC reports repaired files, run it once more after DISM. If it cannot repair files, save the result and continue investigating rather than assuming the gaming restarts are fixed. Microsoft includes system-file checking in its Windows startup and stop-error troubleshooting.

Test memory and isolate components

Test RAM

  1. Search Windows for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
  2. Select Restart now and check for problems, then review the result after Windows starts.
  3. If problems continue, keep BIOS memory settings at defaults, reseat the modules, and test one module at a time in the motherboard’s recommended slot. A bootable memory tester with multiple passes can provide a stronger check.

One successful Windows Memory Diagnostic run does not rule out intermittent RAM, slot, memory-controller, temperature, or configuration problems. Microsoft lists the utility as one part of blue-screen investigation (Resolving blue-screen errors).

Test CPU, GPU, and combined load separately

Use short, controlled tests rather than running an extreme workload for hours. A tool such as OCCT offers CPU, GPU, RAM, PSU, monitoring, and reporting functions. Do not run stress tests if there are signs of electrical damage or severe overheating.

LAPGEAR Home Office Lap Desk – Pink, Fits 15.6” Laptops
  • Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
  • Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy laptop support with the integrated device ledge.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
  1. Run a CPU-only test while monitoring temperatures.
  2. Run a GPU-only test.
  3. Test memory at default settings.
  4. Only if the system remains safe and stable, run a combined CPU/GPU or power test.
  5. Retest in the game that caused the problem.
  • GPU-only test fails: investigate the GPU, driver, temperature, power cable, and GPU power delivery.
  • CPU-only test fails: check CPU cooling, CPU power, motherboard power delivery, BIOS settings, and the CPU.
  • Memory test reports errors: investigate RAM, slots, memory controller, and memory settings.
  • Only combined load fails: PSU, cabling, motherboard power delivery, or system-wide stability becomes more likely.
  • Tests pass but one game still restarts the PC: examine that game’s files, driver compatibility, overlays, anti-cheat, shader cache, frame-rate behavior, and settings.

A test passing proves only that the PC completed that workload; different tests and games exercise different failure modes.

When only one game triggers a restart

Once other demanding games run reliably, focus on differences in the affected game rather than changing several system settings at once.

  • Verify the game files through its launcher; remove mods and third-party injectors.
  • Disable overlays and rebuild shader caches if the launcher or graphics software supports it.
  • Temporarily cap frame rate, lower demanding settings such as ray tracing, and test borderless or windowed mode. If available, try another rendering API.
  • Check whether the issue began after a game patch and test another demanding game to see whether the fault is truly game-specific.

If an FPS cap prevents the restart, it may be reducing heat or power demand; it does not establish that the underlying issue is fixed.

Decide when hardware replacement or repair is justified

Do not replace a PSU or other part solely because Event ID 41 appears. A replacement is better supported when a component-specific test fails, the fault follows the component into another system, a manufacturer diagnostic or RMA confirms a fault, or a known-good substitute changes the result. A known-good PSU that stops repeatable combined-load restarts is stronger evidence than an Event 41 entry alone.

Seek professional service if you cannot safely inspect or test the system, suspect PSU or motherboard failure, or see signs of electrical or liquid damage. Stop repeated tests if cables are damaged or overheated, there is a burning smell, clicking, or visible arcing. For laptops, use model-specific service instructions rather than applying desktop component-replacement steps.
