Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Setting up an Xbox Series X or Series S involves connecting it to a display, pairing a controller, signing in, installing any required updates, and choosing your preferred settings. The Series X disc-drive model can play compatible physical games; the Series S is digital-only. You do not need a Game Pass subscription just to set up the console.
Before you begin
Gather the console, its included power and HDMI cables, the wireless controller and its batteries, a TV or monitor with HDMI, and access to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A Microsoft account is needed for the normal online Xbox experience. A phone with the Xbox app makes setup and text entry easier, but you can also follow the on-screen prompts with the controller.
Check the box label and model-specific quick-start documentation for the exact included parts: retail bundles and revisions can differ. Microsoft’s setup video identifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with Series X and a High Speed HDMI cable with Series S (Microsoft’s Xbox setup video). The standard controller uses AA batteries unless you have a rechargeable battery accessory; connecting a USB cable does not mean a rechargeable battery is installed.
1. Place the console where it can ventilate
Set the Xbox on a hard, stable surface, in the orientation intended for your model. Series X and Series S can each be positioned vertically or horizontally. Keep the ventilation openings clear—in particular, do not cover the large circular vent on Series S—and leave open space around the console. Avoid tightly enclosed cabinets and do not stack heat-producing equipment on it. Keep the power cable away from water and places where it could be tripped over. Use the supplied power cable where possible; do not rely on an unsourced clearance measurement, since the applicable instructions can depend on the hardware revision.

2. Connect power and HDMI
- Connect the power cable to the console and then to a wall outlet or appropriately rated surge protector.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input you used.
- Press the Xbox button on the console to turn it on.
For a first setup, connect the Xbox directly to the TV. This is the simplest way to isolate picture or HDR problems. If you later route video through a soundbar or AV receiver, every device and cable in that chain must support the resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, and copy-protection requirements you want. If a feature stops working through the receiver, connect the Xbox directly to the TV and send audio back over ARC/eARC.
For Series X features such as 4K at high refresh rates, the display, the correct HDMI port, cable, settings, and any intermediate equipment all matter. Microsoft recommends the supplied Ultra High Speed cable for Series X’s full HDMI 2.1 feature set; HDMI 2.1 is not necessary for basic console operation. See Microsoft’s TV and Xbox display guide for capability checks.
3. Pair the controller
Insert batteries, or connect a compatible USB cable if the controller is depleted or wireless pairing is not working.
Wireless pairing
- Turn on the console and press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Press the Pair button on the console.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Wait for the Xbox button to stay lit, indicating the controller is connected.
If it does not connect, replace or recharge the batteries, move closer to the console, restart the console, and pair again. USB connection is a useful fallback. If prompted, let the controller complete its firmware update; you can also check for controller updates later in the Xbox Accessories app.

4. Complete setup with the Xbox app or controller
Use the Xbox app
- Install the official Xbox app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, then sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use on the console.
- With the Xbox on, choose the app’s option to set up a new console.
- Enter or scan the code shown on the TV and follow the prompts for language, region, network, account, and preferences.
- Keep the console powered on while setup and updates finish.
Screen labels can change with the app version, phone operating system, country, or console update. Follow the purpose of each prompt if its wording differs. If the app cannot discover the Xbox, put phone and console on the same local network, avoid guest Wi-Fi, temporarily disable a VPN, and restart the app and console. You can also skip app discovery and finish on the TV with the controller.

Use the controller on the TV
Follow the console’s on-screen setup prompts if you do not have a compatible phone, cannot get local discovery working, or prefer not to use the app. This route is slower for entering passwords, but it completes the same essential setup. Ethernet can help if Wi-Fi discovery or downloads are unreliable.
5. Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet
| Connection | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | A console far from the router, a temporary setup, or a room without Ethernet. | Interference and congestion can make downloads less consistent and complicate multiplayer troubleshooting. |
| Ethernet | A console near a router, network switch, or mesh node with an Ethernet port; useful for steady downloads and multiplayer. | Requires a cable run and may need a switch or other network equipment. |
Connect to the network when setup prompts you. Initial online setup can include a system update and game downloads. Microsoft’s Australia/New Zealand product guide says broadband internet and a Microsoft account/Xbox profile are needed for initial online setup, mandatory updates, downloads, and some features; that guide is region-specific, so do not treat it as a universal statement about every offline use case (Microsoft product guide, Australia/New Zealand edition).
6. Sign in and let system updates finish
Sign in with an existing Microsoft account or create one when prompted. Your Xbox profile includes a gamertag and privacy settings. Choose deliberately which account will make purchases: games and subscriptions are associated with the purchasing account. Use a unique password and enable two-step verification. If a child will use the console, create a separate child account rather than sharing the adult password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLet the initial system update finish before troubleshooting game installation, and do not disconnect power during an update. Update size and duration vary with the console’s state, current system package, and connection. If an update appears stalled, give it time before restarting. If it fails, check the connection, restart the router and console, and check Xbox service availability. For an update loop or recovery procedure, use the official Xbox support hub rather than files from third-party sites.
To check for updates later, the current support path is Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → System → Updates & downloads. Dashboard labels may change (Microsoft update instructions).

7. Set display resolution, HDR, and refresh rate
After setup, open Settings → General → TV & display options and review resolution and refresh rate. Use 4K TV details to see which features the TV and HDMI signal path report. Start with automatic detection; Microsoft recommends checking this screen and avoiding manually forcing HDMI or DVI when troubleshooting 4K.
Series X is intended for native 4K gaming in supported titles. Series S can output 4K for supported media and some games, but that does not mean every game renders internally at native 4K. A 120 Hz output—and a game running at up to 120 frames per second—depends on the game, display, HDMI port and signal path, and settings. HDR10, Auto HDR, Dolby Vision, variable refresh rate, and auto low-latency mode also depend on compatible equipment and content.
Check the TV’s HDMI settings
Some TVs require an enhanced input mode before they offer 4K HDR or high-refresh options. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be called HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color, HDMI UHD Color, Enhanced format, Enhanced HDMI, Input signal plus, or 4K mode. Check the TV manual for the correct port and setting; menu paths vary. If 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz is unavailable, check the TV’s capability, port, input mode, cable, and any receiver or soundbar in the chain, then verify the Xbox’s 4K TV details and TV firmware.
8. Configure audio
Start with the TV speakers or a headset and confirm basic sound before adding advanced formats. The current Xbox path is Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output.
- Stereo uncompressed: a straightforward baseline for TV speakers or stereo equipment.
- 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed: for a compatible receiver and speaker setup.
- Bitstream out: for supported home-theater formats and equipment.
- Spatial audio: Windows Sonic for Headphones, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X where the relevant hardware, app, or license supports it.
Microsoft lists Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Windows Sonic among supported spatial-audio formats (Microsoft’s display and audio guide). If there is no sound, test the TV speakers, confirm the input and volume, use Stereo uncompressed, then bypass the receiver or soundbar. Check ARC/eARC settings and firmware before re-enabling advanced formats.

9. Set privacy and family controls
For a child, use a family organizer account and a separate child Microsoft account. Add the child on the console with Add new, then sign in with the child’s account. Review communication and multiplayer permissions, who can see the child’s profile and activity, content ratings, screen-time limits, web filtering, and purchase approvals. Require approval for purchases and test restrictions while signed in as the child. Microsoft’s account guidance covers adding an account to a device (Microsoft account support); its Xbox getting-started page also points to the Xbox Family Settings app for managing screen time, social interactions, spending, and mature content.
10. Install games or move them from Xbox One
Install a game
For digital games, sign in with the purchasing account and find owned games in the library to download. A Series X model with a disc drive can install and play compatible physical games; Series S has no disc drive and cannot use game discs. Keep free space available for game updates. Microsoft’s U.S. getting-started page lists 512 GB or 1 TB of internal storage depending on model, but advertised capacity is not the same as usable space (Xbox Series X|S getting started).
Series X|S-optimized games may need internal storage or an approved Storage Expansion Card to run at full performance. A USB external drive is useful for storing games and running compatible older titles, but it cannot run every optimized game directly. Uninstalling a game does not necessarily remove its license; digital purchases can generally be downloaded again from the library using the purchasing account.
Move from Xbox One
Sign in on the new console with the same Microsoft account to see compatible digital purchases and entitlements in the library. Redownload games, or use network transfer when both consoles are on the same network; a USB external drive can also move compatible games. Cloud-saved progress generally synchronizes when you use the same account and the game supports cloud saves. Before erasing or retiring the old Xbox, confirm that your credentials work, saves have synchronized, games and profiles are present, and any locally stored captures or data are backed up. See Microsoft’s Xbox One to Series X|S transfer guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Choose a power option
Open Settings → General → Power options and read the console’s current descriptions. A sleep or standby-style option can wake faster and support remote features but uses more power; shutdown or energy-saving mode reduces standby power but may limit or slow background updates and remote functions. Names and available choices change with Xbox system updates, so do not rely on older labels such as “Instant-On.”

Xbox Series X|S setup troubleshooting
No picture
- Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Connect the console directly to the TV, then try another HDMI port.
- Use the cable supplied with the console and enable the TV’s enhanced or 4K input mode if required.
- Restart the TV and console. If the screen remains blank, follow the official low-resolution recovery instructions through the Xbox support hub rather than guessing at settings.
Controller will not pair
Replace or recharge the batteries, move closer, try a USB connection, restart the console, and pair again. If possible, test another controller to determine whether the issue is with the console or controller.
The app cannot find the console
Put phone and Xbox on the same Wi-Fi network, avoid guest Wi-Fi, temporarily disable a VPN, and restart both the app and console. If discovery still fails, complete setup with the controller or connect the console by Ethernet.
An update will not complete
Check the network, restart the router and console, and wait if Xbox services are interrupted. Avoid repeatedly cutting power. If the console enters an update loop, use official Xbox recovery guidance from the support hub.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sign-in fails
Check the account email and password, complete any security verification on another device, and confirm the console is online. A child account may need family approval. If the account itself is inaccessible, use Microsoft’s account recovery or sign-in help rather than creating extra accounts that may not contain the intended purchases.
No sound
Test the TV speakers, verify the TV input and volume, select Stereo uncompressed as a baseline, and temporarily bypass a receiver or soundbar. Check ARC/eARC and device firmware; re-enable advanced audio formats only after basic sound works.
4K, HDR, or 120 Hz is missing
Confirm that the TV supports the feature, the console uses the right HDMI port and input mode, the cable is suitable, and any receiver or soundbar supports the full signal. Check 4K TV details, use automatic detection, and update TV firmware. A title may also lack a high-resolution or high-frame-rate mode even when the hardware supports the output.
A game will not install or launch from external storage
Check that the console is online if the game needs a download or update, that the purchasing account is signed in, and that enough internal space is available. Some Series X|S-optimized games must be moved to internal storage or an approved expansion card to launch; a USB drive remains useful for storage and compatible titles.
