Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To stream VLC on Discord, play your video, join a voice channel, click Screen Share, select the VLC window, enable application audio if the option appears, then click Go Live. Start with VLC in a normal window; if the capture is black or frozen, try sharing your entire screen. Discord documents application-audio capture on Windows and macOS desktop, Chrome, and mobile, but says it is unavailable on Linux. On macOS, Discord’s blog identifies Ventura or newer as the audio-sharing requirement, though prompts and compatibility can change. Discord’s screen-sharing guide has the current platform notes.
Before you start
- Open a local video in VLC and confirm it plays with sound before involving Discord.
- Use the Discord desktop app for the simplest troubleshooting path; Chrome is another documented option for application-audio capture.
- Make sure you can stream in the destination voice channel or call.
- Use headphones if possible to prevent your microphone from picking up the video audio and creating echo.
- If you share the entire display, close private windows and silence notifications first. Screen sharing can expose anything visible on that display.
This method uses Discord’s Go Live or Screen Share capture. VLC is not normally connected to Discord through VLC’s own network-streaming feature.
How to stream VLC on Discord
- Open VLC, start playback, and leave it in a normal window rather than exclusive full-screen mode.
- Open Discord and join the voice channel or call where you want to share.
- Click the monitor or Screen Share icon, then select the VLC application window. Discord’s label and menu placement can vary by client version.
- Check the preview for moving video. If Discord offers an application-audio option, enable it; this captures VLC playback, not your microphone.
- Choose a conservative resolution and frame rate for the first test, then click Go Live.
- Ask one viewer to confirm both picture and sound. Increase quality only after the low-quality test is stable.
If window capture is black, frozen, or missing parts of the video, stop the stream and try sharing the entire screen. This can be more reliable, but it reveals other desktop content. Discord’s documented flow is to join a voice channel, select an application window or screen, and go live: Go Live and Screen Share.
Fix VLC stream audio with no sound
Check that Discord is capturing application audio
A working microphone test does not prove VLC’s sound is being shared: microphone voice and application audio are separate capture paths. Confirm the stream’s audio-sharing option is enabled when available, and use a supported client/platform combination. Discord currently says application audio is supported on Windows and macOS desktop, Chrome, and mobile, but not Linux. On macOS, its blog specifies Ventura or newer for audio sharing; follow the current permission prompts in your installed client.

Confirm VLC and the computer are producing sound
- Play the file locally and confirm VLC’s output is audible.
- Check the operating system’s selected output device and per-application volume controls. Make sure VLC is not routed to a disconnected headset, virtual device, or exclusive output.
- On Windows, inspect the volume mixer and try the intended playback device. Close audio utilities or enhancement software temporarily if they may be taking exclusive control.
- In VLC, check Audio > Audio Device and choose the output that matches your speaker or headphone setup. VLC’s Windows FAQ and player FAQ cover audio-output troubleshooting.
Check Discord’s output and reset voice settings if needed
In Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video and verify the selected output device. If audio routing remains abnormal, use Voice & Video > Debugging > Reset Voice and Video Settings, then test again. Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide also recommends checking devices, permissions, and drivers.
Ask the viewer to check local stream controls
If one viewer sees video but cannot hear it, have them right-click the stream, clear Mute, and raise Stream Volume. Then check whether they can hear Discord voice chat and whether other viewers have the same problem. This separates a local viewer setting from a streamer-side capture failure. Discord documents these viewer controls in its screen-share guide.
Diagnose lag, stutter, or audio-video desynchronization
First establish where the problem starts: VLC playback, Discord capture/encoding, the network, or one viewer’s playback. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped.

VLC stutters before you start sharing
If local playback already drops frames or is out of sync, fix VLC first. Test another file to see whether the issue is limited to one source, then try changing VLC’s GPU-accelerated decoding setting or audio output. VLC documents synchronization and playback-output troubleshooting in its media-player FAQ.
On Windows, the GPU-decoding control is Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs > Use GPU accelerated decoding. Save the change and restart VLC. The VLC Windows FAQ documents this setting. Disabling it is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed improvement; it can increase CPU use.
VLC is smooth, but the stream stutters or the computer slows down
- Lower Discord’s stream resolution and frame rate.
- Choose Smoother Video rather than a text-focused quality option if available.
- Disable Discord hardware acceleration, then test. If there is no improvement, turn it back on.
- Test VLC’s GPU-accelerated decoding separately from Discord’s acceleration setting; restart VLC after changing its setting.
- Close browsers, games, recording tools, launchers, and other GPU-heavy applications, then update the graphics driver.
Discord recommends disabling hardware acceleration when video is problematic and reducing share quality or frame rate if trouble continues. Its troubleshooting guide and streaming guide describe these options. Results vary by hardware, drivers, app builds, and operating system.

Local playback is fine, but viewers see buffering or dropped frames
If your computer is not overloaded and multiple viewers have the same problem, test a wired connection, pause large downloads and cloud sync, and reduce the stream’s resolution or frame rate. Discord says stable bandwidth matters and recommends wired connectivity where possible; its streaming guide explains the quality trade-off. Nitro offers higher-quality streaming features, but it cannot fix capture failures, overloaded hardware, unsupported audio capture, or inadequate bandwidth.
Only one viewer has trouble
Have that person check their stream mute and volume, then test whether other Discord streams play smoothly for them. If other viewers can watch the VLC stream without trouble, investigate that viewer’s local connection and playback settings before changing the streamer’s setup.

Fix a black screen or frozen VLC capture
- Exit VLC full-screen mode and try the normal application window.
- Stop sharing, then restart VLC and Discord and test again.
- If the VLC-window preview is still black or frozen, share the entire display instead. Check the preview before going live, and protect private desktop content.
- Disable Discord hardware acceleration and retest. If it does not help, restore the setting and test VLC’s GPU-accelerated decoding separately.
- Update graphics drivers and the operating system. On macOS, confirm Discord has screen-recording permission in System Settings or, on older versions, System Preferences; quit and reopen Discord if prompted.
- On Windows, try running Discord as administrator as a troubleshooting step if capture access appears to be blocked. It is not a routine requirement.
- If the problem persists, test another VLC video-output or rendering configuration and restart VLC.
VLC’s documentation associates incorrect or black video with graphics drivers and video-output issues; see its Windows FAQ and player FAQ. Discord’s troubleshooting guide covers screen permissions, drivers, acceleration, and stream quality. Protected or DRM-controlled sources may not capture; do not try to bypass content-protection restrictions.

Windows, macOS, and Linux differences
Windows
The Discord desktop app is a practical first test. Check Windows output selection and the per-app volume mixer if VLC audio is absent. Update graphics and audio drivers. Discord’s troubleshooting guide also suggests testing the alternate audio subsystem under User Settings > Voice & Video, switching between Standard and Legacy if available.
macOS
Grant Discord screen-recording permission in the macOS privacy controls. The wording differs across versions: newer systems use System Settings, while older ones say System Preferences. Reopen Discord if permission changes require it. Discord documents macOS application-audio capture, and its blog identifies Ventura or newer as the requirement in that guidance: Discord’s streaming guide. Because macOS and Discord support can change, use the permission prompts and current client behavior as the final check.
Linux
Discord’s current support page says application-audio sharing is unavailable on Linux. Video capture may still work depending on the desktop environment and capture path, but do not expect the official client to provide the same VLC audio sharing as Windows or macOS. A system-level virtual audio device or OBS may be attempted as a workaround, not as guaranteed official support; either adds routing complexity, possible latency, and risk of echo or feedback. Avoid untrusted third-party clients if privacy and account security matter.

Choose stream quality for video or subtitles
For movies, sports, and animation, favor Smoother Video when Discord offers that choice: it prioritizes frame rate over image detail. For menus, documents, slides, or subtitles that must remain sharp, choose Better Text Readability, which favors resolution over frame rate. Higher resolution and frame rate demand more encoding capacity, upload bandwidth, and viewer decoding power. Begin with a conservative setting and increase it only if the test stays smooth. Discord describes these quality priorities in its streaming blog.
When OBS or audio-routing tools make sense
For one VLC window, Discord’s built-in capture is simpler. Consider OBS Studio if native capture remains unreliable or you need scenes, overlays, multiple sources, or more controlled audio routing. OBS adds another capture and encoding stage, so it may increase setup complexity and performance demands.
On systems without Discord application-audio capture, virtual audio-routing software can route VLC sound into another application, but it is an advanced workaround rather than a first fix. It can cause echo, feedback, latency, or confusing monitoring. If you choose to investigate one, use its official documentation: VB-CABLE, BlackHole, or JACK Audio Connection Kit. A capture card is generally unnecessary for VLC playing on the same computer; it is more relevant to external devices. Avoid tools or workflows intended to defeat DRM.
Fast diagnostic checklist
- VLC plays the test file smoothly and audibly on its own.
- Discord captures the VLC window, or the entire display if window capture fails.
- Application audio is enabled where the client and platform support it.
- The viewer has not muted the stream and has raised Stream Volume.
- Discord and the operating system use the intended output device.
- Discord and VLC acceleration have been tested independently if video is black or choppy.
- Resolution and frame rate are low enough for the computer, connection, and viewers.
- Screen-recording permission is granted on macOS.
- If using Linux, the documented lack of application-audio sharing has been taken into account.
Share only media you have the right to show, and do not record or redistribute it without permission.
