The REDMAGIC Astra packs a Snapdragon 8 Elite, a 9.06-inch 165Hz OLED display and active cooling into a tablet weighing about 370g. That makes it an unusually portable Android gaming slate—not simply a small general-purpose tablet. It remains appealing for demanding games, emulation and remote play, but as of August 16, 2026, the original model is listed out of stock on REDMAGIC’s U.S. and global stores, and the company is promoting a newer Astra generation. Its value now depends on finding a genuine discount, checking local software support and confirming warranty and return terms.

Why the compact design matters
At roughly 9 inches, the Astra occupies a useful middle ground: more room for a game than a phone, but less bulk than an 11-inch tablet. Its approximately 370g weight makes it easier to carry and hold for gaming than a larger performance slate. In landscape orientation, the screen gives virtual controls more breathing room; with a Bluetooth or USB-C controller, it becomes a portable screen for Android games, emulators and remote play.

It is still a tablet, not a handheld console. There are no built-in controls or kickstand, so controller play requires an accessory or a place to prop the device. REDMAGIC warns that stretchable gamepads differ in clamp range, shape and port clearance. Check the controller’s supported width, the tablet’s 207mm dimension, its 6.9mm thickness, USB-C placement and whether a case must come off before buying.
The screen can support light split-screen use, but a 9-inch workspace is cramped for sustained productivity. Landscape handling may also take adjustment depending on where a controller grips the tablet and how you orient the USB-C port.
Gaming performance: flagship hardware, with limits set by each game
Snapdragon 8 Elite and memory options
The Snapdragon 8 Elite was flagship-class Android silicon when the Astra launched, and it gives the tablet ample headroom for demanding mobile games and emulation. The available 12GB, 16GB and 24GB RAM tiers are generous; for most players, moving to 24GB is unlikely to be as noticeable as choosing sufficient storage for a game library. Treat the highest memory tier as a capacity option, not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade.
What 165Hz does—and does not—mean
The panel can refresh up to 165 times per second, but that specification is not a promise that every game renders at 165 frames per second. A title may impose its own frame-rate cap, lack high-refresh support or run below that rate at demanding graphics settings. Actual and sustained frame rates also depend on resolution, thermal mode, game optimization and Android compatibility. Panel refresh rate, rendered frame rate and the rate a game can sustain are different measures.
Tom’s Guide reported comfortable play in demanding titles including Genshin Impact, Call of Duty, FC Mobile, Command & Conquer: Rivals and Horizon Chase, while using the display’s 165Hz setting. That is useful hands-on evidence, not proof that all titles run at the screen’s maximum refresh rate.

Cooling and manufacturer test claims
REDMAGIC equips the Astra with a 13-layer ICE-X cooling system that includes liquid-metal and vapor-chamber components. Active cooling can help a thin tablet sustain demanding workloads, but performance modes that push the processor harder can use more power, and the fan introduces audible noise. Tom’s Guide could hear it during aggressive workloads, though the reviewer said it did not substantially disrupt play.
REDMAGIC reports that in its own 60-minute laboratory gaming comparison with an unnamed rival tablet, the Astra averaged 144.6 FPS versus 120 FPS, reached a maximum temperature of 40.1°C versus 41.5°C, and played for 6.67 hours versus 5.26 hours. These are manufacturer-controlled results, not independent benchmark findings, and the unnamed comparison device limits what can be concluded from them.
The 165Hz OLED display is a major draw
The 2,400 × 1,504 OLED panel combines high pixel density with deep blacks, strong contrast and a refresh rate up to 165Hz. Its 16:10-style shape suits games and video better than a very wide display, while leaving more usable height for many apps. Tom’s Guide singled out the screen as a strength for both gaming and general small-tablet use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Video or games with a different aspect ratio can still show black bars, and some Android apps may not use the available space ideally. As with OLED displays generally, prolonged display of static elements can carry image-retention or burn-in risk; no claim that the Astra is immune is established here.
Battery, charging and the fan trade-off
The 8,200mAh battery supports 80W charging. REDMAGIC advertises up to 33 hours of movie playback and an approximately 71-minute full charge under its stated conditions. The company also lists 5.56 hours for Genshin Impact and 4.55 hours for PUBG. Those figures are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes: brightness, frame rate, network use, performance settings and the game itself all affect endurance. The cited independent coverage does not establish a directly comparable standardized battery result.

REDMAGIC’s product materials describe charge-separation functionality for gaming while connected to power. This can reduce battery cycling by supplying power to the device without relying as heavily on the battery, but it does not eliminate battery wear. The standard retail package generally omits the power adapter, so do not assume an 80W charger is in the box; confirm regional or campaign-specific contents before ordering.
Active cooling can help with sustained play, but it does not make heat disappear: it moves heat through the device and relies on a fan. Fan noise, openings that can collect dust, and additional power use are the trade-offs for a cooling system designed for extended gaming.
REDMAGIC OS and Game Space
The Astra launched with REDMAGIC OS 10 based on Android 15. Game Space provides a dedicated game environment with per-game performance profiles, processor and graphics controls, overlays and quick settings. A physical Magic Key launches Game Space by default and can be remapped to functions such as recording, flashlight, voice recorder, translation or sound-mode changes. The tablet also includes customizable RGB lighting, dual X-axis haptics and DTS:X Ultra stereo audio, according to REDMAGIC’s specifications.
These tools suit players who want to tune games and access controls without leaving a session. The broader tablet experience is less ambitious: Tom’s Guide found the multitasking system insufficiently sophisticated for hardware this powerful. The Astra can run demanding apps, but that does not make its software workspace equivalent to a more productivity-focused tablet.
Everyday use beyond games
Media, speakers and cameras
The OLED screen and dual speakers make the Astra a capable compact streaming device. REDMAGIC lists dual 1620 speakers and DTS:X Ultra 3D stereo, but the available evidence does not establish independent measurements of maximum loudness, stereo separation, microphone quality or call performance. A tablet this small can also be easier to grip over its speaker openings in landscape play, depending on hand position.

The 13MP rear and 9MP front cameras are practical for basic video calls, scanning or occasional snapshots; they are secondary to the gaming hardware, and the listed megapixel counts alone do not establish photo quality.
USB-C display output and light productivity
REDMAGIC lists external-display output up to 2K/240Hz, 4K/144Hz or 8K/60Hz over USB-C. That gives the Astra a route to a larger screen for supported uses, although output resolution and refresh rate depend on the connected display, cable and workload. It can serve as a compact Android productivity device or a secondary screen source, but the small built-in workspace and limited multitasking features make it a poor laptop replacement.
No cellular option is identified in the cited coverage, so plan on Wi-Fi or a separate connection for online play and streaming away from home. The cited specifications do not establish microSD expansion; buyers who need removable storage should verify that feature with REDMAGIC for the exact regional model rather than assume it is present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Software support depends on region
REDMAGIC’s current U.S. product page says buyers in the EU and U.K. receive five years of software support, including major Android updates and regular security patches, under regulations effective June 20, 2025. It says other regions receive three years of support. Tom’s Guide described the original commitment as three years, including one major Android update; the newer product-page wording adds a regional distinction that should not be collapsed into one universal promise. The page does not establish a single guaranteed major-update count for every region, so confirm the applicable terms for the country and unit you plan to buy.
For imported units, check whether warranty service, return handling and software support apply in your country and whether the unit’s sales region affects them. REDMAGIC’s product page is the relevant place to confirm current regional terms before purchase.

Price and availability as of August 16, 2026
REDMAGIC’s official pages show different reference prices by store and region, and both list the original Astra as out of stock:
| Store | Listed configuration and price | Availability shown |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. official store | 12GB RAM / 256GB storage: $549 | Out of stock |
| Global official store | Base 12GB RAM / 256GB storage: $499 | Out of stock |
These are reference prices shown on the respective official listings as of August 16, 2026, not proof of stock or a promise that the prices are currently purchasable; taxes, shipping and accessories may be extra. At launch, Tom’s Guide listed a $699 starting price and higher prices for larger memory and storage configurations, and also showed a $499 deal during its review period. Launch pricing, temporary deals and current regional listings should not be treated as interchangeable.
REDMAGIC’s tablet collection now promotes newer Astra-generation products, but the available listing information does not establish current successor pricing or availability. Check the live page and compare the exact configuration before deciding whether the original offers a meaningful saving. An out-of-stock reference listing is not a reliable purchase lead; for any third-party offer, verify seller identity, warranty, condition and return terms.
How it compares with compact alternatives
| Choice | More compelling when you value | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| REDMAGIC Astra | Android gaming flexibility, OLED, up to 165Hz, active cooling and a compact gaming form | Regional support terms, fan noise, no identified cellular model, and uncertain stock for the original |
| iPad mini | Apple ecosystem integration, tablet-app support, resale value and longer-term software support | The Astra’s gaming-focused Android features, OLED and active cooling may suit some players better; compare the actual regional price and configuration |
| Compact Lenovo gaming tablet | A smaller landscape-oriented Android gaming alternative with its own software, display and accessory priorities | Compare the exact Legion Tab model and current price; model specifications and generations should not be treated as interchangeable |
| Larger gaming tablet | More immersive screen area, roomier virtual controls and more space for split-screen work | Less portable than the Astra’s 9-inch, approximately 370g design |
The Astra is not a universal winner over an iPad mini: the better choice depends on whether gaming hardware and Android flexibility matter more than ecosystem and software longevity. Likewise, compare an exact Lenovo model or larger gaming tablet rather than assuming all devices in a product family offer the same experience.

It makes sense if
- You specifically want a compact OLED Android tablet for demanding games, emulation or remote play.
- You value active cooling and a high-refresh display more than a productivity-first software experience.
- You find it in stock at a meaningful discount below the newer Astra generation.
- You can verify local warranty, returns, support terms and charger requirements before paying.
Look elsewhere if
- You need cellular connectivity, a large multitasking workspace or a laptop replacement.
- You prioritize long software longevity or tablet-app support over gaming features.
- You want a charger included, dislike fan noise or are uncomfortable with gaming-oriented software customization.
- The original’s price approaches a newer Astra model, or you cannot confirm stock and after-sales support.
For 12GB/256GB buyers, that base tier is already substantial for most Android games; consider paying more for additional storage if your library needs it, rather than assuming 24GB RAM will raise frame rates.
