REDMAGIC announced the first-generation Astra Gaming Tablet for global markets on July 3, 2025. Its headline features are a 9.06-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and active cooling. As of August 18, 2026, REDMAGIC’s U.S. store lists it at $549 but marks it out of stock; the newer Astra 2 has since launched.
What “goes global” means for the Astra
The international product is called the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet. REDMAGIC’s global announcement was dated July 3, 2025; this is not a new August 2026 launch. A contemporaneous regional report described preorders beginning around July 15, 2025, but that date should not be read as a universal worldwide retail start. Launch timing, promotions and availability varied by market. REDMAGIC’s global announcement
What the OLED display and 165Hz rate mean for games
The Astra has a 9.06-inch OLED panel at 2,400 × 1,504 resolution, a 16:10 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. REDMAGIC lists peak brightness at 1,600 nits and full-screen brightness at 1,100 nits, along with DCI-P3 color coverage and Corning Gorilla Glass. Its stated color-accuracy figure is approximately ΔE 0.7 under the company’s test conditions. The tablet is rated IP54 for dust and water resistance. Official Astra specifications
OLED pixels can switch off individually, producing deep blacks and strong contrast that suit dark game scenes and video. A high refresh rate can make supported games, scrolling and compatible interface animations look smoother. But 165Hz is the panel’s ceiling, not a promise that every game renders at 165 frames per second. Results depend on game support, settings, performance headroom and thermal conditions. REDMAGIC highlights titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG and Minecraft as optimized examples; that does not mean every title uses the full refresh rate. REDMAGIC’s display and game-feature page

REDMAGIC also lists up to 2,000Hz instant touch sampling and 240Hz multi-finger touch sampling. Those figures describe touch-input sampling capability, not a guaranteed reduction in end-to-end input latency in every game.
Performance and cooling hardware
The first-generation Astra uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, with an Oryon CPU listed by REDMAGIC at up to 4.32GHz and an Adreno GPU. A RedCore R3 Pro gaming co-processor handles gaming features. Configurations include 12GB, 16GB or 24GB of LPDDR5T RAM and 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of UFS 4.1 Pro storage. The 24GB/1TB figures describe the top configuration, not every model; availability can vary by market and color. Usable storage is lower than the advertised capacity because the operating system and preinstalled software occupy space. REDMAGIC announced the tablet with REDMAGIC OS 10.5, based on Android 15. What the active cooling system is for
REDMAGIC describes its ICE-X system as a 13-layer cooling design combining Liquid Metal 2.0, dual-layer vapor chambers, graphene and copper heat-spreading layers, under-display cooling materials, thermal gel and a 20,000rpm turbofan. The company claims up to an 8°C reduction in core temperature and a 28% improvement in cooling efficiency. These are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. ICE-X system details

A fan and heat-spreading system are intended to help sustain demanding workloads during longer sessions, when a passively cooled device may have to reduce performance. Active cooling can also mean audible fan noise, extra power use and a moving part exposed to dust. Its value is most relevant to sustained gaming, rather than light browsing or video playback; real results can vary with room temperature, charging, game load and software settings.
Battery, size and connections
The Astra has an 8,200mAh dual-cell battery. REDMAGIC markets fast charging and claims up to 33 hours of movie playback in its own test conditions. That video figure is not a gaming-endurance estimate: demanding games, high brightness and refresh rate, fan operation and wireless use can all change battery life. Battery specifications
At 207 × 134.2 × 6.9mm and 370g, the Astra is a compact tablet: more screen area than a phone, but less to carry than an 11- or 12-inch device. It has a metal middle frame and glass, and comes in Eclipse Black and Starfrost Silver. A case or controller adds bulk and weight, so check accessory fit against the tablet’s width, thickness and USB-C port position before buying. REDMAGIC accessory-fit guidance

Price, stock and what comes in the box
As of August 18, 2026, REDMAGIC’s U.S. product page lists the Astra at $549 and shows 12GB/256GB, 16GB/512GB and 24GB/1TB configurations, but the product is marked out of stock. The global tablet collection also lists the Astra from $549 and marks it sold out. A live product page does not mean a buyer can place an order. Stock, listed prices, configurations, taxes and shipping can differ by region and change over time; $549 is the current U.S. listing, not a universal launch price or price for every market. The U.S. listing names the tablet, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, quick-start guide and stickers as package contents. It says a power adapter is not included except for qualifying early-bird orders. Check the order terms for your region and budget for a compatible USB-C adapter if one is not supplied. Warranty, returns, taxes and shipping terms also depend on the market. Software support is not a fixed upgrade promise
REDMAGIC’s current policy says the Astra Tablet and other older products will continue to receive stability, feature-optimization and critical-security updates, but the duration and schedule are determined case by case. It does not give the Astra a simple model-specific promise of a set number of Android version upgrades. Security maintenance and major Android upgrades are different things, and update timing may vary by region or arrive in over-the-air batches. REDMAGIC software-update policy
Some REDMAGIC pages refer to five-year support in connection with EU and UK regulatory requirements. That language should not be treated as a universal, fixed Astra upgrade commitment across all regions.
Original Astra or Astra 2?
The original Astra is now the previous-generation model. REDMAGIC announced the Astra 2 globally on July 17, 2026, with a display rated up to 185Hz, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and REDMAGIC OS 11.5 based on Android 16. Those are the successor’s headline differences; check the regional product listing for its actual availability and price. Astra 2 launch announcement · Astra 2 specifications

If both are available at similar effective prices, the Astra 2 is the more current REDMAGIC tablet. The first-generation model makes more sense if it is available from an authorized seller at a meaningful discount and its OLED screen, compact size and active cooling matter more to you than newer hardware and a clearer software future. Compare the complete configuration and included accessories, not just the headline price.
Who should consider the first-generation Astra?
- A good match: Android gamers, emulation or cloud-gaming users who specifically want a compact OLED tablet with high refresh-rate capability and active cooling.
- Think carefully: Buyers who need a fixed long-term Android upgrade commitment, cellular connectivity, expandable storage, or a power adapter in the box.
- Check before ordering: Current stock in your region, the exact RAM/storage configuration, package contents, controller fit and the price difference from Astra 2.
The Astra’s combination of a small OLED screen, 165Hz ceiling, flagship-class-at-launch processor and active cooling gives it a distinctive gaming focus. Its appeal in 2026 depends on finding it in stock at a price that makes sense beside its successor, not on treating its 2025 global announcement as a current launch.
