Start with Final Fantasy VII. Its clear opening premise gives newcomers an easy way into a story-led PS1 RPG. If you would rather begin with a storybook fantasy, try Final Fantasy IX; if parallel worlds sound more appealing, make Chrono Cross your next choice. These are practical recommendations, not a measured ranking of difficulty.
Which PS1 RPG should a beginner try first?
Final Fantasy VII: the clearest starting point
Final Fantasy VII is the most straightforward first recommendation here because its official introduction quickly establishes who the story follows and what sets events in motion. Cloud, a former SOLDIER operative now working as a mercenary, joins the eco-group Avalanche in an operation against a Mako reactor. That concrete lead character, motive and immediate conflict give a newcomer a useful foothold.

Square Enix identifies it as a single-player RPG on its Final Fantasy VII PSOne Classics page. That page documents a classic release and its story setup; it does not establish current availability in every store or region.
Final Fantasy IX: a storybook fantasy alternative
Choose Final Fantasy IX if you want a more fairy-tale-like fantasy setup and an ensemble cast. The story begins with the Tantalus theatre troupe planning to kidnap Princess Garnet, and PlayStation describes the resulting journey as an emotional fantasy adventure. The opening gives you a cast and an immediate objective without asking you to first grasp an unusual world structure.

- One of them is a police officer. The other is possessed by an ancient evil threatening all life on Earth. The horrifying bond between them will continue until something dies. A chilling adventure that could only come from the creators of Final Fantasy VII. An epic sci-fi tale told through stunning 3D rendered sequences. Battle mutant monsters in real-time polygon combat. Customize weapons, armor, and character abilities.
PlayStation’s current Final Fantasy IX page documents a later PS4 edition with high-speed and no-encounter boosters, and notes PS5 compatibility subject to system details. Those convenience features belong to that later edition; they are not features of the original PS1 release. Store availability and terms can change.
Chrono Cross: for readers who want a stranger premise
Chrono Cross is a strong follow-up if parallel worlds and a more layered story appeal to you. PlayStation describes its narrative as unfolding across two interlinked parallel worlds. That structure may feel more involved as a first RPG story than the direct hooks of Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy IX—an editorial inference from the premise, not an official difficulty rating.
Rank #2
- Mint condition.. Very Rare
Square Enix’s Chrono Cross archive identifies the title as a one-player RPG and lists a PS one Books release. PlayStation’s Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition page describes the parallel-world story and the inclusion of Radical Dreamers. That modern edition is distinct from the original PS1 disc.
How the three stories compare
| Game | Opening-story clarity | Tone | Narrative frame | Edition-specific convenience features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII | Cloud’s role and the reactor operation establish a direct starting conflict. | Not stated in the cited Square Enix story introduction. | A lead character, motive and opening operation provide a clear entry point. | Not stated on the cited PSOne Classics page. |
| Final Fantasy IX | The troupe’s plan to kidnap Garnet supplies an immediate setup. | Fairy-tale fantasy; PlayStation calls the journey an emotional fantasy adventure. | An ensemble-led adventure grows from the kidnapping plan. | The documented PS4 edition has high-speed and no-encounter boosters; these are not PS1 features. |
| Chrono Cross | The official modern description establishes the premise through two linked worlds. | Not stated in the cited descriptions. | Two interlinked parallel worlds make it the most unusual premise of these three. | PlayStation’s cited modern edition includes Radical Dreamers; no convenience boosters are stated in the cited description. |
What to buy if you want the original PS1 versions
Physical original copies are the direct route if playing the PS1 releases is the priority. The cited sources establish the games and their PlayStation history, but they do not verify current used listings, prices, disc condition, authenticity or regional compatibility. Before buying, check the listing’s region and condition, confirm the disc is the original PlayStation release you want, and make sure your console or chosen setup can play it.
Rank #3
- ALL TIME CLASSIC
- GREAT ROLE PLAYING GAME
- GREAT FOR ALL AGES
- ALL-TIME FAVORITE
- HARD GAME TO FIND
For Final Fantasy IX, distinguish an original PS1 disc from the later PS4 edition: the latter is the one whose PlayStation page documents high-speed and no-encounter boosters. For Chrono Cross, likewise, do not mistake The Radical Dreamers Edition for the original PS1 disc.

- Pick Final Fantasy VII for the clearest first step into this shortlist: a defined protagonist and a concrete opening operation.
- Pick Final Fantasy IX for a storybook fantasy tone and an ensemble adventure, or consider its later PS4 edition if its documented speed and encounter options matter to you.
- Pick Chrono Cross if the promise of two linked worlds is more attractive than the simplest story setup.
There is no universal “easiest” choice established by these descriptions. The best starting point depends on whether a direct conflict, a fairy-tale adventure or a more unusual premise sounds most inviting.
