For the 2024 GPU market, the GeForce RTX 4070 Super was the best all-around choice for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty at 1440p, especially if ray tracing mattered. For 4K ray tracing, the RTX 4080 Super was the more balanced high-end pick; the RTX 4090 delivered the most performance, at a steep price. If you are buying in 2026, treat those as historical recommendations: newer RTX 50-series and Radeon RX 9000-series cards are now available, and current prices—not old launch prices—determine value.
Quick picks by target
| Target | 2024 recommendation | Why it fits | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p rasterized Ultra | RTX 4060 or RTX 4060 Ti; RX 7700 XT as a raster-focused alternative | These are more appropriate for mainstream 1080p play than premium cards. | 8GB versions can constrain demanding textures; heavy ray tracing is a different target. |
| 1440p overall, including ray tracing | RTX 4070 Super | Strong ray-tracing performance and access to DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. | 12GB VRAM; Overdrive needs upscaling and usually Frame Generation for a smoother result. |
| 1440p with more headroom or 16GB VRAM | RTX 4070 Ti Super | More room for demanding ray-traced settings and higher-resolution use. | Costs more than the 4070 Super. |
| Balanced 4K ray tracing | RTX 4080 Super | High-end raster and ray-tracing performance with 16GB VRAM. | Expensive and still benefits from DLSS. |
| Maximum 4K performance | RTX 4090 | The strongest 2024 option for demanding Overdrive/path tracing. | High purchase price and power demand; poor value for many 1440p systems. |
| Rasterized 1440p or 4K | RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX | Strong conventional rendering performance and large VRAM capacities. | Less compelling in this game’s ray-traced and path-traced modes. |
These recommendations are for desktop cards. Laptop GPUs with similar names can perform differently. The right pick depends on resolution, graphics mode, price, and whether you count Frame Generation output separately from conventionally rendered frames.
Why the graphics mode changes the answer
Rasterized Ultra
With ray tracing disabled, conventional rendering is substantially less demanding, and AMD’s Radeon cards become more competitive. The RX 7900 XTX is a strong choice if raster performance and VRAM matter more than the game’s highest ray-traced settings. At 1080p and high refresh rates, a CPU can limit performance in dense scenes, so a faster GPU may not deliver a matching frame-rate increase.
Ray Tracing Ultra
Standard ray tracing adds a substantial GPU load, and NVIDIA has a clear advantage in Phantom Liberty in this mode. Start with DLSS Quality at 1440p on a compatible GeForce card, then adjust if performance is not steady enough. TechSpot found the RTX 4070 only around the 60-fps range at 1440p Ultra Ray Tracing with DLSS Quality; demanding scenes can fall below that, which is why the faster RTX 4070 Super is a safer 2024 all-around recommendation (TechSpot’s Phantom Liberty benchmark).

Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode
Overdrive is the game’s path-traced mode, not another name for every ray-tracing preset. It is an enthusiast-quality setting with a much heavier GPU workload. CD Projekt Red’s guidance places RTX 40-series hardware around the RTX 4070 Ti tier and above for Overdrive, with stronger hardware needed at higher resolutions (CD Projekt Red’s Overdrive requirements and guidance). At 4K, even high-end cards rely on DLSS and Frame Generation for a smooth experience; do not assume native 4K path tracing at 60 fps.
What the official requirements do—and do not—promise
CD Projekt Red’s PC requirements for Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty distinguish conventional presets from ray-traced configurations. They list RTX 2060 Super/RX 5700 XT-class cards for the High preset at 1440p, RTX 3080/RX 7900 XTX-class hardware for Ray Tracing Ultra at 1440p, and RTX 4080-class hardware for 4K Overdrive with DLSS Frame Generation enabled (CD Projekt Red’s system requirements). These are targets for specified settings and technologies, not universal guarantees of a particular frame rate. Check the full table before using it to compare individual configurations.
How to choose for your resolution and play style
1080p: spend for the mode, not just the resolution
For rasterized Ultra, an RTX 4060 or 4060 Ti can suit a budget build; the RX 7700 XT is worth considering when it is meaningfully cheaper and ray tracing is not a priority. Avoid treating an 8GB card as a premium 4K or heavily modded option. If you want RT or Overdrive, budget for a stronger GPU and use upscaling rather than assuming 1080p alone makes the workload easy.

1440p: RTX 4070 Super is the 2024 sweet spot
Choose the RTX 4070 Super for the best balance of price tier, ray-tracing ability, and NVIDIA’s DLSS feature set among the 2024 shortlist. The RTX 4070 Ti Super is the step-up choice if the price difference is reasonable and you value 16GB VRAM or additional path-tracing headroom. The RTX 4070 remains a possible lower-cost option when discounted, but it has less margin for demanding settings.
4K: RTX 4080 Super for balance, RTX 4090 for the ceiling
The RTX 4080 Super is the more balanced 2024 high-end purchase for 4K ray tracing. Consider the RTX 4090 only if maximum performance is worth its cost and the rest of the system can accommodate its power and cooling needs. DLSS Quality or Balanced is a sensible starting point at 4K; adjust according to the GPU and desired frame rate.
Ultrawide and modded play need extra margin
“1440p” does not describe every wide monitor: 3440×1440 and 3840×1600 render more pixels than standard 2560×1440. Visual overhaul, high-resolution texture, lighting, and NPC-density mods can also raise GPU, CPU, and memory demands beyond stock-game benchmarks. Choose with those extra workloads in mind rather than applying a standard-resolution recommendation literally.

NVIDIA versus AMD in Phantom Liberty
Why GeForce suits ray tracing and Overdrive
RTX 40-series cards support DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and Reflex. Together with NVIDIA’s ray-tracing hardware, these features make GeForce the more straightforward choice for this game’s demanding RT modes. NVIDIA’s published DLSS 3.5 performance comparisons combine multiple technologies and compare against native rendering; they are vendor measurements, not universal independent benchmark results (NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.5 announcement).
When Radeon makes more sense
RX 7000-series cards can be attractive for rasterized play, especially when they cost substantially less than a comparable GeForce card or their larger VRAM capacity is useful. TechSpot’s testing found AMD performing strongly in rasterized Phantom Liberty, while NVIDIA moved well ahead when ray tracing was enabled (TechSpot’s benchmark). More VRAM does not by itself make a card faster at path tracing, and AMD is the less compelling pick if Overdrive is central to the purchase.
Upscaling and Frame Generation: read the FPS number carefully
- At 1440p: Begin with DLSS Quality on supported NVIDIA hardware. At 4K, try DLSS Quality or Balanced; Overdrive may require a more aggressive upscaling mode.
- On Radeon: FSR is available, but do not assume its image quality or performance trade-offs match DLSS in this title. Independent testing reported that FSR scaling did not perform as efficiently as expected on some Radeon cards (TechSpot’s benchmark).
- With Frame Generation: Generated frames raise displayed frame rate but do not replace adequate underlying rendering performance. A low base rate can still feel sluggish, and generated frames can introduce artifacts. For a meaningful comparison, separate the base rendered rate, the upscaled rate without Frame Generation, and the final displayed rate.
- For responsiveness: This is a single-player RPG, so Frame Generation can be a reasonable visual trade-off; it is not equivalent to the same number of conventionally rendered frames for responsiveness.
Buying a GPU in 2026: reassess the historical picks
The RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4080 Super, and RTX 4090 recommendations above describe the 2024 market, not an automatic 2026 buying hierarchy. RTX 50-series and RX 9000-series cards are now available. Compare the exact card’s current local price, performance in the graphics mode you want, VRAM, power requirements, and features before buying. Historical launch MSRPs are not a substitute for today’s street price.

| 2026 option | Best fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5060 Ti 16GB | Lower-cost 1080p or moderate 1440p | The 16GB model is preferable to the 8GB version for demanding textures and longevity; not a 4K Overdrive pick. |
| RTX 5070 Ti 16GB | High-end 1440p and entry-level 4K ray tracing | DLSS 4 and current frame-generation features are relevant, but compare its actual price with AMD alternatives. |
| RTX 5080 16GB | More demanding 4K ray tracing and path tracing | Better suited than the 5070 Ti to 4K Overdrive, but marked-up pricing can undermine value. |
| RTX 5090 32GB | Maximum-performance enthusiast systems | Its launch MSRP signal was $1,999, and 2026 listings have been reported above $4,000; this is not a value pick. |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | Raster-focused high-end value | Launch MSRP signal was $599; it is a weaker fit when the priority is the game’s strongest path-tracing experience. |
Those MSRP and market figures are signals, not guaranteed current prices: retailer, region, model, and date matter. Check current listings and the exact board’s power and connector requirements. NVIDIA’s current range is listed on its RTX 50-series page; AMD’s desktop Radeon range is listed at AMD’s product page. For independent comparisons, consult a benchmark hierarchy rather than assuming a product tier translates directly to Cyberpunk performance (Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy). Prices remain volatile (Tom’s Hardware price tracking).
Should you upgrade an existing GPU?
Upgrade only if the graphics mode you want is not performing acceptably; changing from rasterized Ultra to Overdrive is a much larger workload jump than moving between ordinary presets. An RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, RX 6800 XT, or RX 6900 XT may remain adequate for rasterized play, while an upgrade can make sense if you specifically want substantially better ray tracing or path tracing. RTX 3080 owners should weigh the cost of a new card against the settings and frame-rate improvement they will actually use. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal upgrade threshold for these cards, so compare results from tests with matching resolution, mode, upscaler, and Frame Generation status.
Check these settings and system limits before blaming the GPU
- Match your display: Standard 2560×1440, ultrawide, and 4K are different workloads.
- Check CPU limits: At 1080p, high refresh rates, and dense Night City scenes, the processor may cap frame rates before the GPU is fully used. Lower crowd density if you are CPU-limited.
- Check VRAM and mods: The RTX 4070 Super has 12GB; the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super have 16GB; the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX have 24GB; the RX 7900 XT has 20GB. Exact board models can vary, so verify specifications. Texture settings and mods affect memory pressure.
- Keep comparisons like-for-like: Results depend on game patch, drivers, CPU, RAM, benchmark route, settings, upscaler, and whether Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction are enabled. Do not rank results from different methods as though they were a single controlled test.
Cloud gaming if a local upgrade is not practical
GeForce NOW Ultimate is an alternative for players with a capable internet connection and a PC that cannot run the game well locally. NVIDIA advertises RTX 4080-class streaming quality and RTX features for compatible games (NVIDIA’s Cyberpunk feature page; GeForce NOW). Streaming is a poor fit with unreliable internet, data caps, strict latency needs, or a requirement for local mod support.
