Best Monitor for Cities: Skylines in 2026: Ultrawide, 4K and Value Picks

For most Cities: Skylines players, 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide is the sensible center. Choose 27-inch 1440p for value or 4K for sharper detail.

For most Cities: Skylines players, a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide with adaptive sync and a 100–165Hz refresh rate is the best balance of map width, image quality and GPU load. Choose 27-inch 1440p to spend less or reduce graphics demands; choose 32-inch 4K when fine detail and text clarity matter more than a wider view. Because this guide reflects product and pricing information available in 2026, it is not a record of what was available or priced this way in 2024.

Quick recommendations

Monitor type Best for Main trade-off
34-inch, 3440×1440, 100–165Hz, adaptive sync Most players: a wide city view without the pixel load of 4K ultrawide More demanding than standard 1440p; confirm the game and your apps behave well at 21:9
27-inch, 2560×1440, 144–180Hz Value, limited desk space, and mixed gaming Less map width and desktop room
27- or 32-inch, 3840×2160, 120Hz or higher Sharp text, roads and assets; productivity Higher GPU demand; desktop scaling may be useful
OLED ultrawide Premium contrast and cinematic games Burn-in risk with persistent interface elements, plus higher cost
49-inch, 5120×1440, 32:9 Enthusiasts who want an especially broad workspace Size, cost, GPU load and compatibility compromises

Refresh rate is a ceiling, not a promise that the game will render at that rate. Large cities, simulation load, mods, settings and your CPU and GPU all affect frame rate.

Why an ultrawide suits city building

More horizontal room for the map

A 34-inch 21:9 display gives you more horizontal workspace than a standard 16:9 screen, which can make it easier to view a broad area and keep side panels open without repeatedly rotating or zooming the camera. The same width is useful outside the game for a guide, Discord, asset tools or other windows.

That does not make ultrawide universally better. A 34-inch screen is wider, but not necessarily taller, than a 32-inch 16:9 display. Curvature can also be a matter of taste, and a broad screen needs enough desk width and viewing distance. Window management and streaming layouts may need adjustment.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check aspect-ratio behavior before buying

Do not assume every game version, mod or overlay handles 21:9 or 32:9 identically. Check UI scaling, cutscenes, screenshots, windowed and borderless modes, and whether content is stretched, cropped or letterboxed. Older buying guides recommend ultrawide for the series, but they do not establish a compatibility guarantee for every current game version. Silent PC Review’s monitor guide and WePC’s guide are secondary buying references, not official compatibility documentation.

1440p, ultrawide or 4K?

The right resolution depends on whether you value map width, fine detail or lower graphics demands. These pixel counts show the relative display workload; they are arithmetic comparisons, not frame-rate predictions.

Resolution and common format Pixels What it favors Trade-off
2560×1440, 16:9 3.69 million Value and easier GPU demands Less horizontal workspace than ultrawide
3440×1440, 21:9 4.95 million Map width and immersion About 34% more pixels than 2560×1440
3840×2160, 16:9 8.29 million Sharp text and detailed assets About 78% more pixels than 3440×1440
5120×1440, 32:9 7.37 million Very broad workspace About 49% more pixels than 3440×1440, as well as a very wide physical footprint

A 4K image can show finer text, roads, trees and assets, but 4K is not automatically the better city-building choice: it offers less horizontal width than a 21:9 display and asks more of the GPU. A 4K screen can be run at a lower resolution, but scaling may make the image less crisp than at its native resolution. If your GPU struggles, a 27-inch 1440p monitor or 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide is a more balanced starting point.

Match the monitor to the Cities: Skylines game and PC

The original Cities: Skylines and Cities: Skylines II have substantially different official PC specifications. A monitor does not remove a CPU or GPU bottleneck, and the published recommended graphics card is guidance rather than a minimum threshold for using a particular display.

Game Steam recommended graphics Other relevant recommended specification
Cities: Skylines NVIDIA GTX 580 or AMD Radeon RX 560 Intel Core i7-2700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X; 16GB memory
Cities: Skylines II NVIDIA RTX 3080 10GB or AMD RX 6800 XT 16GB Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X; 16GB memory

These are the recommended Windows specifications listed on Steam for Cities: Skylines and Cities: Skylines II. Paradox describes the sequel as performance-heavy and offers optimization guidance. In either game, a busy city can be limited by simulation and CPU performance before the monitor’s refresh-rate ceiling matters.

Refresh rate and adaptive sync

Choose refresh rate for your whole PC, not a marketing number

  • 60Hz: Playable, but not the preferred target for a new monitor if you also use the PC for modern games or daily work.
  • 75–100Hz: A reasonable range for a city-builder-focused setup.
  • 120–165Hz: A practical range for mixed gaming and desktop use.
  • 180Hz or more: Most useful if you also play games that can run at high frame rates.

A 240Hz or 360Hz panel is usually poor value when city builders are the main use. It will not make the simulation run faster, and a large city may not render enough frames to exploit that refresh rate. Microsoft’s Windows instructions for changing refresh rate explain where to set the display rate; Dynamic Refresh Rate, specifically, requires a VRR-capable display with at least 120Hz support.

VRR can smooth changing frame rates

Variable refresh rate (VRR)—including AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible or VESA Adaptive-Sync—synchronizes the display to the frames your system renders, helping reduce tearing when frame rates vary. It does not increase FPS. Before buying, check the monitor’s actual VRR range, whether it works over DisplayPort, HDMI or both, and whether your GPU supports that mode. Low-frame-rate compensation and flicker behavior are model-specific. ASUS’s 1440p gaming-monitor guide describes G-SYNC compatibility on supported monitors and GPUs; it is not a substitute for checking the specifications of a particular model.

Panel type, HDR and long-session comfort

IPS, VA or OLED?

  • IPS: A strong default for clear text, wide viewing angles and consistent productivity use. Contrast is typically weaker than VA or OLED, and IPS glow may be visible.
  • VA: Often offers stronger contrast and can be a good-value ultrawide choice. Dark smearing during camera movement or scrolling can be distracting, so check independent, model-specific testing rather than relying on an advertised response-time figure.
  • OLED: Offers deep blacks, strong contrast and very fast pixel response. Static toolbars, overlays, menus and desktop windows make burn-in risk relevant to this game. Consider the manufacturer’s burn-in warranty and pixel-refresh features, plus possible VRR flicker and text fringing on some models. OLED is most compelling if you also want its contrast for other games and accept the added care and cost. LG’s UltraGear guide discusses OLED and HDR generally; it is not a Cities: Skylines-specific test.

Treat HDR as an extra, not the deciding specification

An HDR10 or HDR400 label alone does not establish strong HDR image quality. Brightness, contrast, local dimming or OLED-level contrast, and tone mapping all matter in practice. For a city-building monitor, resolution, workspace, text clarity, ergonomics and stable VRR are usually more important than nominal HDR support.

Make the physical setup comfortable

For long sessions, check height, tilt and swivel adjustment, VESA mounting, stand depth and the screen’s curve as well as its panel. An aggressive 1000R curve may suit immersive play but feel less natural for spreadsheets or other flat-layout work. A wider screen can crowd speakers or leave too little room on a shallow desk. Matte versus glossy finish and night-mode or blue-light controls are personal preferences; neither replaces setting a comfortable viewing distance and screen height.

Current model examples and 2026 price signals

The following examples illustrate available feature combinations; they are not a tested ranking of gaming performance. Prices below are 2026 U.S. signals, not 2024 prices, and can change. Confirm the exact model suffix, live stock, warranty and return terms in your region before buying.

Model Published specifications and 2026 U.S. price signal Good fit if… Check before choosing
Dell S2725QS 27-inch 3840×2160; up to 120Hz; VRR; height, pivot, swivel and tilt adjustment. Dell’s U.S. store showed $299.99 when checked in 2026. You want a sharp, compact 4K screen for games and general PC use. It is not a 21:9 map-width option, and 4K demands more from the GPU than 1440p.
Samsung S34C504GAN 34-inch 3440×1440 IPS, 100Hz, HDR10 and fully adjustable stand. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists $659.99. You want a 34-inch ultrawide with an IPS panel and moderate refresh rate. The listed figure is MSRP, not necessarily a retail price. HDR10 alone does not establish strong HDR performance.
Samsung S34A654UBN 34-inch curved 3440×1440 VA, 1000R curve, USB-C with 90W power delivery, USB hub and LAN. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists $1,079.99. You need an ultrawide that can also serve as a laptop docking and productivity display. The 1000R curve may not suit office work; VA dark smearing and gaming value need model-specific consideration.
Samsung S49C954UAN 49-inch 5120×1440, 32:9, VA, 240Hz. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists $2,399.99. You have the desk width and PC for an enthusiast-scale workspace. Check game and overlay compatibility, viewing distance and GPU headroom; the price is far beyond what most city-builder players need.

Dell’s U.S. monitor catalog shows how features such as high-refresh 4K, VRR, USB-C and ergonomic stands vary by model. For other product ranges, see LG’s monitor catalog and the ASUS 1440p gaming range; compare the individual model’s VRR behavior, connections and stand rather than choosing by brand or advertised response time.

Set up the monitor for Cities: Skylines

  1. Connect through the port that supports your target mode. Use DisplayPort where the monitor requires it for full resolution and refresh rate; check the manual for the exact supported combinations. HDMI 2.1 is useful if you also need high-refresh 4K or console connectivity.
  2. Set Windows to the desired refresh rate. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the display and choose a supported refresh rate. Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions cover this setting.
  3. Enable VRR on both sides. Turn on adaptive sync in the monitor’s on-screen menu, then enable the compatible mode in your GPU software. Verify that the chosen connection and refresh rate support it.
  4. Start at native resolution. If performance is inadequate, lower game settings or resolution deliberately and compare image clarity; rendering below native resolution can look softer.
  5. Test your actual play setup. Check fullscreen and borderless modes, UI scaling, camera zoom, mods and overlays at your target aspect ratio. If VRR flickers at unstable frame rates, try a frame-rate cap or another supported refresh mode.

Which monitor should you buy?

  • Pick 34-inch 3440×1440 for the strongest balance of map width, image quality and GPU demand for most players.
  • Pick 32-inch 4K when fine detail and desktop clarity matter most and your graphics card can handle the added pixel load.
  • Pick 27-inch 1440p for value, a smaller desk or a more GPU-friendly mixed-gaming setup.
  • Pick OLED or 49-inch 32:9 only for a specific reason: premium contrast or an unusually broad workspace, respectively, with the associated risks, cost and compatibility checks understood.
