Best overall: the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDMR, a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor that combines deep blacks, HDR support, VRR and HDMI 2.1. It is a premium choice, not a requirement: the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG32UCDS is a less expensive 4K OLED alternative, while a 4K mini-LED display is a better fit for a bright room or long sessions of desktop work. For most console setups, choose a 27- or 32-inch 16:9 monitor with HDMI 2.1 and VRR.
Red Dead Redemption 2 rewards contrast, image detail and a screen large enough to make its landscapes feel expansive. A 240 Hz refresh rate is optional; it does not make the game run at 240 frames per second. Your platform, PC graphics card, room lighting and tolerance for OLED care matter more.
Which monitor features matter most for RDR2?
Contrast and HDR come first
Dark interiors, night scenes and stormy skies make black level and shadow handling especially noticeable. OLED controls each pixel’s light output, producing very deep blacks without a backlight shining through dark areas. Mini-LED can deliver brighter highlights, but its local dimming may create a halo, or blooming, around bright objects against dark backgrounds. Conventional IPS generally costs less but has weaker native contrast.
Do not treat an HDR label as proof of good HDR. Results depend on brightness, black level, local dimming and tone mapping. A monitor with basic HDR support may offer little improvement over a well-adjusted SDR picture. Compare the monitor’s HDR and SDR modes in your room rather than choosing by the label alone.

Choose resolution and size together
At 32 inches, 4K is the premium desktop choice for landscape detail and sharpness. A 27-inch 1440p monitor is a strong value pairing, particularly for a midrange PC or a smaller desk. A 27-inch 4K screen is also sharp, though operating-system scaling may be helpful for desktop text. A 1080p display can save money, but it is a budget compromise for a game whose scenery benefits from finer detail.
Consider how far you sit from the screen: 32 inches can feel more absorbing, while 27 inches may be easier to take in at close range. Curvature is a matter of preference, not a performance upgrade. Displays of 42 inches or more can work in a TV-style setup, but are less conventional for a desk.
Refresh rate and VRR
A 120–165 Hz monitor is already ample for this type of game. A 240 Hz or faster panel may suit other games, but should not be the deciding feature for RDR2. The game’s achievable frame rate depends on the platform and, on PC, the graphics card, resolution and graphics settings.

Variable refresh rate (VRR) can help smooth out changing frame rates. Check that the monitor supports VRR through the input and signal mode you intend to use; HDMI 2.1 by itself does not guarantee that every console feature works as expected. RTINGS’ console compatibility testing discusses differences in signal, HDR and VRR behavior.

The PG32UCDMR is the best overall fit here because its 32-inch 4K QD-OLED panel addresses the image qualities that matter most, while its connectivity supports a mixed PC-and-console setup. ASUS lists 99% DCI-P3 coverage, a 0.03 ms response time, a heatsink and OLED Care Pro features intended to reduce burn-in risk. Those features do not make OLED burn-in impossible.

- 31.5" UHD (3840 x 2160) QD-OLED panel
- High 240Hz refresh rate, ultra-low 0.03ms GtG response time
- 1.07 billion colours (10-bit) with incredible gamut (DCI-P3 99%) & accuracy (ΔE ≤2)
- VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certified
- OLED Care 2.0 & MSI Gaming Intelligence AI
The XG32UCDS preserves the main attractions—4K, OLED contrast and a large 16:9 screen—at a lower observed price, but verify the precise model and its connections before buying. The LG’s 480 Hz mode is aimed at other games, not a reason to pay extra for RDR2. The PG32UQXR is the OLED-free option in this shortlist for buyers who prioritize brightness and varied desktop use over perfect blacks.
Choose by platform and use
PC: match resolution to the graphics card
- High-end PC: A 32-inch 4K OLED is the image-quality pick. The monitor’s 240 Hz ceiling is useful headroom for other games, not a promise of that frame rate in RDR2.
- Midrange PC or smaller desk: A 27-inch 1440p OLED balances detail, contrast and workload. A 4K display remains usable, but resolution does not make the graphics card faster.
- Bright room or long desktop sessions: Consider mini-LED or IPS if you prefer not to manage OLED’s static-image risk.
- Budget PC: A 1440p IPS monitor is a sensible starting point. Prioritize a good picture and VRR over paying for an extreme refresh rate.
Rockstar advises using the game’s quality slider to assess system capability and balance performance against image quality at the chosen resolution. Its PC graphics-performance guidance explains the feature. Start there, then adjust settings to suit your frame-rate target; no monitor can remove the GPU workload of rendering at 4K.

Choose a 16:9 4K display if sharpness is the priority, with HDMI 2.1 and VRR for broader compatibility with supported games. Sony confirms that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 Hz output, but that is a console output capability—not a guarantee that RDR2 renders at 120 frames per second. A 240 Hz monitor will not make the game run at 240 fps on PS5 or PS5 Pro. See Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide for supported output and connection guidance.

- ASUS OLED Care Pro with Neo Proximity Sensor: New functions with Neo Proximity Sensor that precisely detects when the user is away, switching to a black screen to reduce the risk of burn-in
- Professional-Grade Color Accuracy: VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black compliance, 99% DCI-P3 gamut, true 10-bit color, and Delta E < 2 color difference for astonishing HDR performance for photo and video editing
Xbox Series X|S
For a full-screen console image, choose 16:9 and look for 4K, HDMI 2.1, VRR and HDR support. Check the specific monitor’s Xbox behavior rather than assuming those labels guarantee every feature combination: HDR behavior can differ with signal resolution, and VRR support depends on the display and connection. RTINGS’ console compatibility tests cover Xbox and PlayStation signal behavior.
Ultrawide and work use
An ultrawide can suit a PC-only setup if the game and your preferred configuration support the aspect ratio. It is a poor universal recommendation: PS5 and Xbox Series consoles do not support ultrawide gaming output and show side bars, according to RTINGS’ console compatibility testing. If a full-width image matters, choose a 16:9 screen for a console.
For a display that also shows static work content for long periods, IPS or mini-LED avoids OLED’s permanent burn-in concern. OLED may still suit mixed use if you accept its care routines and check warranty terms. USB-C power delivery or KVM features can be useful for a laptop, but they do not improve console image quality.

OLED, mini-LED, IPS or VA?
| Panel type | Strength | Limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLED | Pixel-level black control, strong contrast and fast pixel response | Permanent burn-in is possible; brightness behavior and price vary | Dark-room cinematic gaming and buyers who will use pixel-care features |
| Mini-LED | High brightness and local-dimming HDR | Blooming and dimming quality vary by display | Bright rooms or mixed desktop use |
| IPS | Often more affordable, with clear text and no OLED burn-in concern | Weaker native contrast; HDR quality depends on implementation | Budget and general-purpose use |
| VA | Often offers higher native contrast than IPS at a lower price | Motion behavior and viewing angles vary by model | Value-focused buyers who check the exact model’s performance |
OLED image retention is not the same as permanent burn-in: temporary retention may fade, while burn-in is lasting uneven wear. Static taskbars and other fixed elements, long desktop sessions and high-brightness use make ownership habits relevant. Keep pixel-care features enabled, allow the monitor’s refresh or compensation routines to run, use a screen saver or hide a static taskbar when practical, and review warranty coverage. Heatsinks, pixel shifting and care software reduce risk; none eliminates it.
Set up the monitor for RDR2
PC setup
- Connect over DisplayPort where practical, or use the appropriate HDMI connection for your hardware and desired features.
- Set Windows and the game to the monitor’s native resolution.
- Enable adaptive sync on the monitor, then enable G-SYNC or FreeSync in the graphics-driver control panel if supported.
- Use Rockstar’s quality slider as a starting point, then adjust individual graphics settings for your preferred balance.
- If frame pacing is inconsistent, try a frame-rate cap. Use HDR only if its result looks better than a well-adjusted SDR image on your particular display.
- On OLED, leave pixel-care features enabled.
PS5 setup
Open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. Sony’s video-output guide documents these settings and troubleshooting steps.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p for a 4K display.
- Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic and VRR to Automatic where supported.
- Set HDR to On When Supported; leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic initially.
- Connect to the monitor’s compatible HDMI 2.1 input for 4K/120 Hz-capable output. Use the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable and connect directly where possible.
If 4K/120 Hz is unavailable, check the input, cable, direct connection, monitor firmware and console software. Sony also recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2 if flicker occurs; reducing signal bandwidth can resolve some display problems.
Xbox setup
In the console’s current display settings, verify the display’s reported 4K, 120 Hz, VRR, HDR10 and color-depth capabilities. Menu wording can change with system updates, so use the current on-screen labels rather than relying on a fixed menu path. If changing an “Overrides” setting affects VRR, return to the standard supported signal mode and check the monitor’s compatibility documentation.

Quick Recap
Fix common picture and signal problems
HDR looks gray or washed out
- Compare the display’s HDR mode with a calibrated SDR mode; HDR support alone does not guarantee a better picture.
- Check that the monitor is using a suitable HDR preset and that local dimming is enabled where applicable.
- Confirm whether the game is outputting HDR and whether the operating system is forcing an HDR desktop mode that looks poor for SDR content.
- Check the GPU’s RGB range and output format, then consider updating graphics drivers and monitor firmware.
PS5 does not offer 4K/120 Hz
- Use the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 input, not an HDMI 2.0 port.
- Connect the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable directly to the console, bypassing older receivers, switches or capture devices.
- Check Resolution, 120 Hz Output and Video Transfer Rate in PS5’s Video Output settings.
- Update the monitor firmware and console software; if the picture flickers, try Sony’s recommended -1 or -2 Video Transfer Rate setting.
