The Quest 2 cannot install and run the original BONEWORKS by itself. Connect it to a PC using wired Quest Link, Air Link, or another PC-VR streaming method, then run the Steam version on the computer. If you want to play without a PC, BONELAB is the official standalone alternative—but it is a separate game, not the original BONEWORKS.
Can BONEWORKS run directly on Quest 2?
No official standalone Quest 2 version of the original BONEWORKS is established by its Steam listing, which specifies a Windows PC and SteamVR. The computer renders the game; the Quest 2 serves as the headset and display. Meta community guidance also identifies Link, Air Link, and Virtual Desktop as ways to use Quest 2 for PC VR games.
That distinction matters: saying Quest 2 cannot play BONEWORKS is too broad. It cannot run the original game natively, but it can display the PC version when connected to a suitable computer.
What you need to play it through a PC
- A Quest 2 headset and a VR-capable Windows PC.
- A Steam account, the Steam version of BONEWORKS, and SteamVR.
- Meta Quest Link desktop software for wired Link or Air Link.
- For wired Link, a stable USB-C cable that supports data transfer—not a charging-only cable.
- For wireless play, a suitable Wi-Fi network and a PC that can maintain a reliable connection to the router.
The Steam store listing specifies at least 20 GB of storage for the game. Allow additional space for SteamVR and other software.

How to set up wired Quest Link
Wired Link is a useful first setup because it removes wireless-network variability while you confirm the PC can run the game. Meta’s software labels and menu locations can change, so follow the current prompts in the headset and desktop app.
- Install the Meta Quest Link desktop software on the Windows PC and sign in with the account used on the headset.
- Install Steam and SteamVR, then install BONEWORKS from its Steam page.
- Turn on the Quest 2 and connect it to the PC with the USB data cable.
- Accept the Quest Link prompt in the headset and enter the PC VR environment.
- Start SteamVR from the PC or the PC VR interface. Confirm that SteamVR detects the headset and controllers.
- Launch BONEWORKS from SteamVR or the Steam client. The expected result is a stereoscopic VR view in the headset, not only a flat desktop window.
How to play wirelessly
Air Link
Air Link streams the PC’s VR output to the Quest over Wi-Fi. Open Meta Quest Link on the PC and enable Air Link if the option is available; enable it in the headset’s current settings as well, then pair the Quest with the computer. Once inside the PC VR environment, start SteamVR and launch BONEWORKS. The exact toggle location can change between software versions.

Wireless results depend on router placement, interference, network congestion, and the PC’s connection. If Air Link stutters or disconnects, test with wired Link before changing several wireless settings at once.
Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop is a third-party wireless streaming option, not a standalone copy of BONEWORKS. The PC still runs the game. Install Virtual Desktop on the Quest and its corresponding streamer software on the PC, connect both devices to the same network, select the PC in the Quest app, then start SteamVR and the game. It adds another software layer and may involve a separate purchase; check the current Quest store listing for availability and regional pricing.

Can you play BONEWORKS without a PC?
Not as an official native Quest 2 game. A third-party project called Labworks has been reported as a way to recreate the BONEWORKS campaign inside BONELAB on standalone Quest hardware. It is an unofficial mod, not a Quest release of the original game. Availability, installation requirements, compatibility, and performance can change; use legitimate game copies and follow the mod creator’s current instructions. BONEWORKS and BONELAB compared
BONEWORKS is the original 2019 physics-focused VR adventure. BONELAB is Stress Level Zero’s separate 2022 follow-up, available in a standalone Quest version as well as on PC VR. Its Steam description says its physics systems improve on those used in BONEWORKS; that does not make it the same game or campaign.

Buying BONELAB on Quest does not mean you own BONEWORKS. They are separate titles. If you buy BONEWORKS on Steam for PC VR, you generally do not need a second copy for the Quest: the headset is acting as the PC’s display, not running a Quest edition. Do not assume cross-buy between storefronts without checking the specific product listing.

The listing specifically emphasizes CPU capability for demanding physics calculations. A strong graphics card alone therefore does not rule out a CPU or simulation bottleneck. Lowering render resolution or refresh rate can reduce the load, but minimum specifications do not promise a particular frame rate or streaming quality.
Troubleshooting Quest 2 BONEWORKS problems
The game opens as a flat desktop window
- Exit the game and make sure Quest Link, Air Link, or your chosen PC streaming connection is active.
- Start SteamVR manually and check that it detects the headset and controllers.
- Launch BONEWORKS from the SteamVR library.
- If it still appears flat or SteamVR cannot see the headset, restart Steam, SteamVR, and the Meta PC application, then reconnect the headset.
The game runs poorly or stutters
Separate the likely bottleneck before changing settings. A rendering bottleneck points to GPU load or resolution; a simulation bottleneck can involve CPU-heavy physics; wireless stutter can come from network interference, latency, or encoding; tracking interruptions point to the headset or controllers.

- Try wired Link to see whether wireless streaming is contributing to the problem.
- Lower SteamVR or Meta render resolution and, if needed, refresh rate or in-game graphics settings.
- Close CPU- and GPU-intensive background applications, and update graphics drivers and SteamVR.
- For wireless play, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where possible, reduce distance and obstructions, and check for Wi-Fi congestion.
- If the issue started suddenly, restart the PC, headset, router, and VR software.
The headset disconnects from the PC
- Wired Link: Check that the cable supports data, reseat both ends, try another USB port, and see whether the PC recognizes the headset before starting SteamVR.
- Air Link: Confirm that the PC and headset are on the intended network rather than a guest network. Reduce distance and obstructions; a wired Ethernet connection from PC to router can improve the PC side of wireless streaming.
Which option should you choose?
- You want the original campaign and have a VR-ready PC: Get BONEWORKS on Steam and begin with wired Link. Move to wireless once the basic PC VR setup works.
- You have a Quest 2 but no gaming PC: Choose BONELAB for an official standalone experience, understanding it is a different game.
- You want cable-free PC VR: Try Air Link if your network is suitable; consider Virtual Desktop if you prefer its interface or Air Link does not work well for your setup.
- You are considering Labworks: Treat it as an unofficial mod route with changing compatibility and installation requirements, not a substitute for an official native BONEWORKS release.
