The Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK is a remarkably compact gaming PC built around an unusual Intel Core/Radeon design—but in 2026, it makes sense mainly as a carefully checked used system at a low total cost. Its 2018 gaming performance sat around the GTX 1050 Ti-to-GTX 1060 Max-Q class in one comparison and between GTX 1050 Ti and RX 470 levels in another; that is useful historical context, not a guarantee for current games. The other catch is price: the $999 launch price bought a barebones kit, not a ready-to-play computer.
What is the Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK?
The NUC8i7HVK is the higher-end gaming configuration in Intel’s eighth-generation Hades Canyon mini-PC family. It pairs a 100 W, quad-core/eight-thread Core i7-8809G mobile processor with Radeon RX Vega M GH graphics and 4 GB of dedicated HBM2 memory. Intel described the design as an unlocked eighth-generation Core i7 with Radeon graphics, built around a redesigned motherboard and chassis intended to balance power use and size. Intel’s product brief identifies it as a gaming- and VR-oriented system.
The appeal is its unusual single-package combination of Intel CPU and AMD Radeon graphics in a very small machine. The trade-off is that this is an older platform with a specific, non-upgradeable graphics solution rather than a current mini PC that can be judged by today’s gaming expectations.
Is Intel Hades Canyon NUC still able to handle gaming?
At launch, it delivered credible 1080p-class gaming for a compact computer. In PCWorld’s 2018 3DMark comparison, Radeon RX Vega M GH landed roughly between a laptop GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 Max-Q, closer to the latter in that test. PCWorld’s review provides that benchmark comparison. GamersNexus reported gaming performance between GTX 1050 Ti and RX 470 levels in its testing. Those results describe tests conducted in 2018, not performance in games released in 2026. The supplied reviews do not establish current-game frame rates, so buyers should not treat the old GPU comparisons as a promise that demanding new releases will run smoothly. For older games, lighter competitive titles, and a small gaming setup with adjusted graphics settings, the hardware may still be useful; for a new gaming-PC purchase, compare its actual used price and demonstrated performance with newer mini PCs or conventional desktops.
What does the NUC8i7HVK cost to complete?
The original $999 price was for the barebones kit. You need compatible SO-DIMM memory, storage and an operating system to make it a usable PC. PCWorld’s configured review system cost almost $1,550 after memory, storage and an OS were added. AnandTech listed its tested configuration at $1,617 without an operating system; it included an Intel Optane 800P 118 GB SSD, Intel 545s 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory. That distinction matters when assessing a listing. A barebones unit priced near its original $999 launch price is a poor value if you still have to buy memory, storage and an OS. A used kit that already includes known-good components may be more practical, but compare the complete outlay—not just the seller’s headline price—with newer systems.
What you need to complete the kit
- Memory: Compatible SO-DIMM RAM. Check whether the listing includes it and verify capacity and configuration.
- Storage: An SSD. Confirm what drives are installed and whether they are included in the sale.
- Operating system: The kit is not ready to use as a finished PC without an OS supplied by the buyer or included with the system.
How does it compare with a newer mini PC?
There is no single comparison that settles the question: a used Hades Canyon may offer an attractive compact gaming option, but condition, included parts and full system cost can change the value substantially. Check these points against the specific newer mini PCs you are considering:

- Gaming performance per dollar: Compare recent, relevant game tests at the resolution and settings you intend to use; the 2018 GPU comparisons are not current benchmarks.
- Total configured cost: Add memory, storage and any OS cost to the NUC’s price, then compare like with like.
- Upgrade flexibility: Verify which RAM and storage are included and what can be replaced or added. The sources cited here do not establish a like-for-like upgrade comparison with newer models.
- Noise and thermals: The available reviews do not provide a standardized noise figure suitable for a direct numerical comparison. Seek measurements for the exact models and configurations rather than assuming the smaller system will be quieter.
- Displays and media: AnandTech reports that all six display outputs are routed to the Radeon GPU and evaluates 4K HEVC HDR playback. It finds useful media capability, but says the unit falls short of perfection as a 4K HTPC. AnandTech’s review details the display and media testing.
- Warranty and drivers: Check the warranty status and current driver availability for the actual unit and operating system. The cited reviews do not establish a current support guarantee.
- Used condition: Confirm the machine boots, the Radeon graphics work, the power adapter is included, and the advertised RAM and SSD are actually present.
What to check before buying a used NUC8i7HVK
- Get a complete inventory: Ask the seller for the exact RAM capacity, installed storage, OS status, and included accessories.
- Verify the power adapter: Confirm that the original or a compatible adapter is included and that the computer operates reliably with it.
- Test the Radeon graphics: If possible, confirm that the system recognizes and uses its Radeon GPU under load rather than relying on a boot-only demonstration.
- Inspect the unit’s condition: Ask about damage, repair history and any instability. A small form factor does not make condition or cooling irrelevant.
- Price the finished system: Include any missing RAM, SSD or OS in your calculation, then compare that total with current alternatives.
Is the Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK worth buying?
It can be a sensible niche purchase if you want a compact used PC, find one at a substantial discount, and can verify that its adapter, Radeon graphics and included components are in working order. Its historical gaming tier can help set expectations for older or less demanding games, but it cannot establish how well it will handle a particular modern title.
It is difficult to justify paying close to the original $999 barebones price, especially when the kit still needs memory, storage and an operating system. For a buyer who wants predictable current-game performance, a newer system with recent independent benchmarks is the safer comparison.
