Can You Use a 120Hz Monitor with a PS4?

A 120Hz monitor can work with a PS4 if it accepts the console’s HDMI signal, but the display’s refresh-rate rating does not make PS4 games run at 120Hz.

Yes, you can connect a PS4 to a 120Hz monitor if the monitor accepts the console’s HDMI signal. But the monitor’s 120Hz rating does not mean the PS4 will output games at 120Hz. PlayStation’s published specifications document standard PS4 video output up to 1080p, while PS4 Pro supports 4K output up to 60 frames per second under specified conditions.

Will a PS4 run at 120Hz on a 120Hz monitor?

No. A 120Hz rating describes what the monitor’s panel can display; it does not change the video signal the console sends. PlayStation’s official PS4 FAQ lists HDMI video standards up to 1080p, and its PS4 Pro FAQ describes 4K output up to 60 frames per second—not 120Hz output. Those specifications do not establish 120Hz gameplay on either model.

The standard PS4 FAQ notes that games can run at up to 60 frames per second, but that is not a promise that every game reaches 60 fps. Frame rate is also distinct from a monitor’s refresh-rate capability.

Does a 120Hz monitor work as a PS4 display?

It can, provided the monitor accepts the PS4’s HDMI output mode. PlayStation’s setup instructions connect the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the display. Since monitor compatibility depends on the specific screen’s accepted HDMI resolutions and timings, check its manual rather than assuming every 120Hz monitor will accept every PS4 signal. See PlayStation’s PS4 setup instructions.

What output can each PS4 model provide?

Console Documented output What that means for a 120Hz monitor
Standard PS4 PlayStation’s 2013 FAQ lists 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p over HDMI. The listed modes do not establish 120Hz output. A compatible monitor may still display the console’s HDMI signal.
PS4 Pro PlayStation’s 2016 FAQ describes 2160p output up to 60 frames per second with a supported 4K display and Premium High Speed HDMI cable. 4K support does not mean 120Hz support. The documented Pro output condition is up to 60 fps.

What to check before connecting a PS4 Pro to a 4K monitor

For the 4K/60Hz configuration described by PlayStation, the display and the devices in the HDMI chain must support the required 4K mode. Use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable, connect to the display’s 4K-capable HDMI input, and select that input. PlayStation’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR setup guide provides the connection guidance.

Should you choose a 120Hz monitor for PS4?

Choose a monitor based on whether its HDMI input accepts your console’s signal and whether its resolution suits your intended use. A 1080p monitor with HDMI input is a straightforward option for standard PS4. For PS4 Pro, consider whether your setup supports the 4K/60Hz mode you want. A 120Hz panel may suit other devices you connect, but it is not a PS4 performance upgrade and will not make the console output at 120Hz.
