If you want one current Battlefield game that offers both a story campaign and large-scale multiplayer, start with Battlefield 6. EA describes its campaign as nine missions and lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If you are choosing mainly for multiplayer, Battlefield 2042 is another option to consider. The right fit depends on whether you want a guided solo story, sprawling team objectives, or both.
Is Battlefield single-player or multiplayer?
Battlefield is a series, not a single game with one fixed format. Individual releases differ, so check the specific title rather than assuming every Battlefield has the same mix of campaign and online play.

Battlefield V - Xbox One | $13.99 | Buy on Amazon |
For a current game with both formats documented, Battlefield 6 is the clearest starting point: EA lists a nine-mission single-player campaign alongside multiplayer and Portal, its toolset for customizing Battlefield and creating player-made experiences. Portal is a creative play option, not a replacement for the campaign or the standard multiplayer playlists. EA’s Battlefield 6 overview
Where should you start?
Choose Battlefield 6 for a campaign and multiplayer
EA lists Battlefield 6 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the EA app, and the Epic Games Store. Its product page says online play requires a persistent internet connection and an EA account. Consider Battlefield 2042 if multiplayer is your priority
EA describes Battlefield 2042 as a multiplayer-focused first-person shooter, with large-scale and close-quarters combat, class-based play, and modes including Conquest and Breakthrough. Its page lists PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The larger 128-player maps are limited to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5; Xbox One and PS4 versions are capped at 64 players and use smaller maps. Check the current platform listing for details. EA’s Battlefield 2042 overview
This makes 2042 a useful comparison for multiplayer scale, but the cited EA overview does not establish whether it has a campaign. Do not infer that it does or does not from a multiplayer-focused description.

What are Battlefield 6’s multiplayer modes?
In the larger objective modes, teams fight over territory and may use vehicles as well as infantry. Other playlists bring the action into closer quarters or focus more directly on eliminations.
| Mode | What players do | Good fit if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Conquest | Capture and hold multiple lettered control points across a broad combat zone. EA says official playlists often use the largest player counts and zones, with tanks, jets, and attack helicopters shaping battles. | Wide-front battles, shifting objectives, and vehicle combat. |
| Rush | Attackers plant explosives at M-COM systems; defenders try to defuse them. The teams have different roles and life rules. | A focused attack-and-defend push rather than a spread of control points. |
| Breakthrough | Attackers try to capture objectives sector by sector while defenders hold them. EA describes it as a large-team mode combining infantry and vehicles. | A battle that advances along a front as sectors change hands. |
| Escalation | Two teams compete for strategic control points; as territory is taken, the remaining points concentrate the fight. | A control-point battle that grows more focused as it progresses. |
| Team Deathmatch and Squad Deathmatch | Emphasize getting eliminations rather than capturing a sequence of strategic objectives. | More direct, combat-focused rounds. |
| Domination and King of the Hill | Focus on close-quarters control of objectives. | Infantry-oriented objective fights in tighter spaces. |
Mode descriptions are based on EA’s Battlefield 6 multiplayer mode guide. Rules and playlists can change, so consult the in-game mode information for current details.
