A 2011 teardown by UBM TechInsights and iFixit also shows why opening it is manageable for a battery swap but much riskier when work reaches the upper display and its hinge-routed cables.
What is inside the original Nintendo 3DS?
The 3DS uses two displays: a glasses-free 3-D upper screen and a lower touchscreen. Its compact clamshell also houses three VGA cameras, an infrared port, a Circle Pad, and motion sensors. The technical teardown slideshow published by EE Times on March 29, 2011 identified Sharp as the maker of both the primary 3-D display and secondary touchscreen, and reported two Fujitsu Semiconductor fast-cycle RAM (FCRAM) memories.
The iFixit teardown documented these motherboard components:
- Nintendo 1048 0H ARM CPU
- Fujitsu MB82M8080-07L, 128 MB FCRAM
- Toshiba THGBM2G3P1FBAI8, 2 GB NAND flash
- Texas Instruments PAIC3010B
- UC CTR 041KM73 KG10
- InvenSense ITG-3270 MEMS gyroscope
- STMicroelectronics LIS331DH accelerometer, marked ST Micro 2048 33DH X1MAQ in the teardown’s chip list
The lower LCD measures 2.42 × 1.81 inches, has a resolution of 320 × 240 pixels, and can display 16.77 million colors. These findings apply to the original 3DS teardown, not automatically to later 3DS-family models.

Can you replace the original 3DS battery?
Yes. The original model has a replaceable 3.7 V, 1,300 mAh (5 Wh) lithium-ion battery. iFixit’s 2011 repair documentation says the battery is easy to swap once the back cover is removed, but the entire back cover comes off as one piece rather than using a small battery door. The guide lists a Phillips #00 screwdriver and a plastic opening tool among the relevant tools. Check compatibility before buying a replacement: 3DS-family models do not all share the same enclosure or battery.
For the original 3DS, iFixit reported battery life of 3–5 hours when playing 3DS software and 5–8 hours with original DS games, with a full-charge time of 3.5 hours. These are figures from its 2011 documentation, not a promise of runtime from an aged battery today. The iFixit Nintendo 3DS repair guide gives the battery and disassembly details.

How hard is it to take apart a 3DS?
iFixit rated the original 3DS 5 out of 10 for repairability in 2011. The score reflects the difference between straightforward access to some parts and delicate, difficult work in the upper half of the console.
Battery and lower-body access
Removing the one-piece back cover adds steps compared with a handheld that has a dedicated battery door, but the battery itself is readily swappable after that cover is off. A Phillips #00 driver and plastic opening tool are useful for the job; use the correct size and avoid forcing screws or clips.

Upper display and hinge cables
Reaching the upper-display screws requires a heat gun and plastic opening tool, according to iFixit. Further disassembly involves separating the hinges and threading ribbon cables through their hollow centers. The guide warns that the top-display cables are frustrating to remove without tearing and difficult to reseat, making screen work substantially more demanding than a battery change.
Connectors, ports, and small parts
Most connectors are zero-insertion-force (ZIF) types, which require careful handling of their locking tabs. The headphone jack and charging connector are soldered to the motherboard, so replacing a failed port calls for soldering rather than simply unplugging a modular part. iFixit also warns that the many small components can be easy to lose during disassembly. See the iFixit Nintendo 3DS teardown for the documented component access and cable routing.

Why are 3DS top-screen repairs difficult?
The upper screen is connected through ribbon cables routed inside the hinges. To reach its fasteners, the repairer must work through heat-assisted opening and plastic-tool prying; to proceed, the hinge assembly must be separated and the ribbons carefully fed through the narrow hollow hinges. That combination creates the principal risk: a cable can tear during removal or prove difficult to thread and reseat during reassembly. The repair is therefore not equivalent to replacing the accessible battery, and should be approached only with appropriate tools and patience.
What did the teardown say about Nintendo’s design?
Allan Yogasingam, then technical marketing manager at UBM TechInsights, characterized the internals as “Generally, what we’re seeing here is a traditional Nintendo handheld design.” The teardown supports that observation in the sense that the 3DS retains the familiar clamshell handheld form while adding dual displays, cameras, and motion sensing inside a tightly packed enclosure. Its repair challenges arise less from a single unusual component than from the upper screen’s hinge-routed cables, connector delicacy, and soldered ports.
