How 3D V-Cache and a Larger L3 Cache Affect Gaming Performance

3D V-Cache can help in cache-sensitive games, but the gain depends on the title, settings, processor, and whether your GPU is already the bottleneck.

AMD 3D V-Cache can improve gaming performance when a game benefits from having more data close to the CPU—but extra L3 cache does not translate into a fixed frame-rate increase. Results vary by game and settings, and a graphics-card bottleneck can hide any CPU advantage.

What 3D V-Cache does

L3 cache is a fast memory layer in a processor. When a game’s working data fits in cache, the CPU can access more of it nearby instead of waiting for data from system memory. A larger L3 cache can help workloads that benefit from that access, but the size of the cache alone does not predict a game’s frame rate.

AMD’s 3D V-Cache adds capacity by stacking a cache die vertically with processor silicon. For its second-generation Ryzen design, AMD describes a 64 MB L3 cache die connected using through-silicon vias and direct copper-to-copper bonding. AMD says the added cache sits beneath the processor cores, a placement it says gives the cores direct access to the cooler and can enable higher operating speeds. These are AMD’s descriptions of its design and intended benefits, not proof of a universal gaming uplift. AMD’s 3D V-Cache overview

How much can it change game performance?

There is no single percentage that describes the effect of more L3 cache across games. A useful illustration comes from TechSpot’s April 2026 review, which tested nine Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 X3D processors across 14 games at 1080p with an RTX 5090. The high-end graphics card was used to emphasize CPU performance. The reported differences between the fastest and slowest tested X3D processors varied substantially by game:

Game and setting Reported gap between fastest and slowest tested X3D CPUs What the result shows
Rainbow Six Siege X, medium settings Almost 80% A large spread in this review’s particular CPU-focused test; it is not an estimate of cache-only uplift.
Battlefield 6 51% A substantial difference between the tested processors in this title.
Borderlands 4, Badass preset 9% A much smaller spread; TechSpot describes this setting as GPU-bound with a reasonably modern CPU.

These are comparisons across processor models and generations, not controlled measurements of cache capacity as the only changed variable. Clocks, core configuration, memory, platform, game patches, drivers, and test settings can also influence results. Do not read the figures as the gain a particular buyer will get by upgrading or as a direct comparison with a review using a different test setup. TechSpot’s 2026 Ryzen X3D gaming comparison

Why your graphics card and settings matter

If the GPU is already limiting performance, a faster CPU or larger cache may make little difference to frame rates. Ars Technica notes that the GPU limits gaming performance in many circumstances. Lower resolutions or less demanding graphics settings can make CPU differences easier to see; raising resolution or visual quality can shift the limit back to the graphics card. The balance depends on the game and system, so a benchmark is most useful when it resembles the resolution and preset you actually use. Ars Technica’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D review

How to judge whether an X3D processor is right for your PC

  1. Check whether the CPU is the limit. Compare performance in the games you play and look for evidence that the graphics card is not already holding frame rates back. A CPU upgrade is less compelling when the GPU is the constraint.
  2. Look for matching test conditions. Prioritize benchmarks at your resolution and graphics preset. Results at 1080p with a high-end GPU are useful for comparing CPU limits, but may not predict performance in a GPU-bound setup.
  3. Compare more than average frame rate. Use 1% lows when a review provides them, along with average frame rates, to understand both typical performance and dips. Check that the compared results use the same game, settings, and test system where possible.
  4. Account for the rest of your workload. If you also do creator or productivity work, compare core configuration and performance in those applications rather than choosing solely on gaming cache.
  5. Confirm platform compatibility and current price. Verify that a processor works with your motherboard and platform, then check live pricing before deciding. For example, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is among the models in TechSpot’s 2026 comparison; it is a candidate to investigate, not a blanket recommendation. AMD’s Ryzen desktop processor listings

Older Ryzen 7000-series comparisons also show why results should be judged title by title rather than treated as one universal ranking. TechSpot’s Ryzen 7000-series X3D comparison

What a larger cache figure does—and does not—tell you

A cache total is a hardware specification, not a gaming-performance score. For example, AMD announced the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition with 208 MB of total cache and a suggested price of $899 at announcement. AMD described it as the first desktop processor with 3D V-Cache on both chiplets and positioned it for developers and creators as well as gaming. That cache figure does not establish that the processor is the best gaming value, or how much faster it will be in a given game. AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh called its 208 MB of on-chip memory “incredible”; that is vendor language, not independent evidence of a frame-rate uplift. AMD’s 9950X3D2 announcement
