If a PC game appears stuck compiling shaders, first give a first launch or a run after an update time to finish: there is no universal wait time that proves compilation has frozen. If progress stops and the game becomes unresponsive, try the low-risk checks below in order. Avoid repeatedly force-closing the game or deleting cache folders by guesswork.
Is shader compilation actually stuck?
Shader compilation prepares graphics data the game may need to render scenes. How long it takes depends on the game, graphics hardware, driver, and whether usable cached shaders are available. A first launch or a launch after a game or driver update may take longer than later runs. No universal time limit distinguishes slow compilation from a hang.
Look for signs of progress and whether the game or PC remains responsive. If the display has not changed and the game appears unresponsive, move on to one restart rather than repeatedly ending the process. A crash, missing graphics, or a whole-system lockup may indicate a different problem from a progress screen that simply takes a while.
Try these fixes in order
1. Restart the game client and PC
Close the game and launcher, restart the PC, then launch the game again. Steam includes restarting among its general launch troubleshooting steps. If an overlay or other nonessential background program may be interfering, temporarily close it and test again. Steam’s general guidance is at Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’.

2. Install available game, Windows, and graphics-driver updates
Check the game launcher for an update and install available Windows updates. Then identify your graphics adapter and driver version and check the GPU maker’s official source for a compatible driver. Steam explains how to find graphics details with DxDiag in its driver-update guidance. Avoid unofficial driver downloads.
3. Verify the game’s files if it is installed through Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
Steam says verification may take several minutes. It can report local configuration files as failing verification; Steam notes that this can be normal. Do not verify several games at once or run verification during another system-intensive task. 4. Reset a shader cache only with instructions for its owner
Shader caches may be managed by the game, launcher, or graphics driver, and the correct reset procedure depends on which cache is involved. NVIDIA provides instructions for deleting its shader-cache files and says they can be recreated the next time an application launches: Deleting NVIDIA Shader Cache files. Capcom also identifies a damaged driver-generated cache as a possible graphics issue and points users to their GPU maker’s instructions in its Steam-game troubleshooting guidance.
Do not treat one vendor’s cache steps as universal or delete folders based on an assumed location. AMD says its Shader Cache stores frequently used game shaders to reduce regeneration, with the setting AMD optimized by default; its guidance is for AMD Radeon settings: Configure AMD Radeon Settings for Ultimate Gaming Experience. Intel’s Precompiled Shaders feature can download pre-optimized shader files for supported Steam games, but support can vary by driver version and updates: Intel Precompiled Shaders.

5. Check that the PC meets the game’s graphics requirements
Compare the installed GPU with the requirements for the specific game, not just its general PC requirements. Integrated graphics may be a limitation in some titles. Steam’s performance guidance suggests reducing shader detail and trying windowed mode on some systems with integrated graphics: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.

A cache can reduce repeated shader generation, so recurring compilation is a reason to check the title’s own support guidance and confirm that its cache can persist. It does not by itself identify one cause: the cache may belong to the game, platform, driver, or a supported precompilation feature, and behavior varies by title and driver. Use the relevant game’s and GPU maker’s instructions rather than applying a reset intended for a different cache.
When to contact game support
If the issue remains after restarting, updating, verifying Steam files where applicable, and checking the game’s requirements, consult the publisher’s current support page. Include the game version, GPU model, graphics-driver version, Windows version, and the exact point where the process stops. A game patch can also change compilation behavior or introduce a title-specific problem, so general PC steps may not resolve every case.
