Its strongest case is 1440p: reviewers found compelling performance with substantially lower power use, plus 12GB of memory, DLSS 3 frame generation and AV1 encoding. Native 4K is a more qualified proposition, where the RTX 3080 can pull ahead.
What did reviewers conclude about the RTX 4070?
NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 4070 on April 12, 2023, with a starting price of $599. That was $100 below the RTX 3080’s launch MSRP, according to PCWorld’s launch review. Independent reviews broadly supported NVIDIA’s positioning of the card near RTX 3080 performance in rasterized games, while stressing that results change with the workload and resolution.
Tom’s Hardware described performance as often tied with the RTX 3080, and TechSpot likewise found RTX 3080-like performance at the launch price alongside meaningful power savings. Digital Foundry’s testing pointed to a useful distinction: the RTX 4070 makes a strong 1440p option, but can fall behind an RTX 3080 in native 4K. These are review-level conclusions rather than a single directly comparable benchmark set; different games, settings and test configurations prevent treating them as one universal FPS result.
How does RTX 4070 performance compare with RTX 3080?
In conventional rasterized games, the RTX 4070 is often in the RTX 3080 performance class, not a guaranteed match in every title. NVIDIA’s comparison describes the 4070 as “on par” with the 3080 in its tested rasterized games. Independent reviews reinforce the broad comparison while showing why resolution matters: 1440p results are generally favorable to the 4070, whereas native 4K can expose a throughput gap.

Ray tracing and upscaling complicate any simple ranking. The RTX 4070 supports DLSS 3 frame generation, which can increase displayed frame rates in supported games; an FPS figure that uses frame generation is not directly equivalent to a native-rendered result. NVIDIA reported an average 1.4x performance versus RTX 3080 with DLSS 3 in its stated comparison, not as a universal uplift across games. Digital Foundry considered rasterization, ray tracing and DLSS/frame generation, but the available review summaries do not provide a single common game-and-driver benchmark set for an exact, reproducible comparison.
Why is the RTX 4070 more efficient?
The standout advantage is power consumption. NVIDIA says the RTX 4070 matches the RTX 3080 in its rasterized-game comparison while using nearly half the power; PCWorld and TechSpot also highlighted efficiency in their reviews. The benefit is less heat and a lighter power draw for a similar broad tier of gaming performance, especially at 1440p. The “nearly half” figure is NVIDIA’s claim for its comparison, not a promise that every game or system will show precisely that ratio.

What do you get beyond performance?
- 12GB of memory: The RTX 4070 has 2GB more VRAM than the RTX 3080 in NVIDIA’s comparison. Tom’s Hardware notes this is 50% more than the RTX 3070 Ti.
- DLSS 3 frame generation: Supported games can use generated frames to raise displayed frame rates. This is a feature-dependent result, not a substitute for comparing native rendering performance.
- AV1 encoding: The Ada-generation card supports AV1 encoding, a useful capability for supported capture and streaming workflows.
Is the RTX 4070 a good choice for 1440p or 4K?
For 1440p gaming
Yes, the RTX 4070 is a strong 1440p choice in the reviewed comparisons. It offers performance broadly around the RTX 3080 rasterization tier, lower power use, 12GB of memory and access to DLSS 3 features in supported games. That combination makes it particularly compelling if you want high-resolution gaming without the RTX 3080’s power draw.
For native 4K gaming
Be more selective. Digital Foundry found a native-4K shortfall against the RTX 3080, so buyers prioritizing maximum native 4K throughput should compare game-specific results rather than assume the cards are interchangeable. DLSS can improve performance in supported titles, but an upscaled or frame-generated result should be weighed separately from native 4K rendering.

RTX 4070 versus a used RTX 3080: what should you weigh?
There is no universal winner without a current used price and the exact RTX 3080 model. The RTX 4070’s evidence-backed strengths are lower power use, 12GB memory, DLSS 3 frame generation and AV1 encoding. The RTX 3080 remains worth considering if native 4K performance is the priority and the particular card’s price and condition make sense. Compare the exact game results you care about, whether they use native rendering or upscaling, and the total system fit. Power-supply wattage and connector requirements vary by board-partner model, so check the selected card’s specifications rather than relying on a generic figure.
