Updating the emulator and graphics drivers, choosing Vulkan for AMD graphics in Ryujinx, and letting shader caches build are sensible first steps. Lowering resolution helps mainly when the GPU—not the CPU—is the bottleneck.
Why Switch emulation is demanding
An emulator has to reproduce the behavior of a different console while translating its processor instructions into code the host system can execute. Ryujinx documents translating ARM code through an intermediate representation into x86 code, and describes its CPU emulator as supporting much of ARMv8. That translation adds work beyond simply running a game natively. Ryujinx says emulation is CPU-bottlenecked in the vast majority of cases, so a slowdown may persist even if the graphics settings are reduced. Ryujinx documentation
Identify the kind of slowdown first
Low or uneven frame rate during ordinary play
If performance is consistently poor, the CPU may be limiting the emulator. Lowering the rendered resolution is unlikely to solve a CPU bottleneck. It is worth testing as a diagnostic only if the GPU is the limiting component.
Brief hitches when new effects appear
A hitch that occurs when a visual effect appears can be caused by shader compilation. The emulator compiles a shader for the host graphics system the first time it encounters that effect. Ryujinx’s shader cache stores compiled shaders so they can be reused, which can reduce repeated stuttering and frame-rate drops on later plays. The first encounter can still hitch; a cache is not a guaranteed sustained-FPS boost. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide

Slow startup or loading
Ryujinx’s Profiled Persistent Translation Cache (PPTC) stores translated functions to reduce game load time. It is enabled by default, and the guide says its benefit becomes available from the third launch after the game has reached the title screen at least twice. This is a loading-time improvement, not evidence of higher frame rates during play. Ryujinx documentation
What to try, in order
- Update Ryujinx and graphics drivers. Ryujinx’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking both when a game runs slowly. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a promise that a demanding game will reach full speed. Setup & Configuration Guide
- Use Vulkan for AMD graphics in Ryujinx. Ryujinx recommends Vulkan rather than OpenGL for AMD and Intel graphics. Check that your installed build and SteamOS setup expose the backend option; the recommendation does not guarantee the same result in every game. Setup & Configuration Guide
- Give shader and translation caches time to help. Ryujinx enables shader caching and PPTC by default. Revisit areas and effects that caused shader hitches, and allow repeated launches for PPTC to take effect. Caching can reduce repeated compilation or loading work, but does not remove the initial shader hitch or promise better in-game FPS. Setup & Configuration Guide
- Test a lower resolution only as a GPU check. If reducing resolution improves performance, graphics load may be a factor. If it does little, the CPU may be the constraint. Ryujinx says lowering resolution may help in the less common case where the GPU is the bottleneck. Setup & Configuration Guide
- Leave other settings at their defaults unless the guide or a game-specific source recommends a change. Ryujinx says it is pre-optimized and advises against changing settings its guide does not mention unless staff directs it. Avoid fixed TDP, GPU-clock, CPU-thread, or power-tool values presented as universal fixes: current game-specific evidence for those settings is not established here. Setup & Configuration Guide
Why an FPS mod may make a game worse
Many Switch games tie physics and game speed to frame rate, according to Ryujinx’s FAQ. Raising the frame-rate target can therefore make the game itself run faster. A static high-FPS mod can also cause slow motion if the Deck cannot sustain its target. Treat such mods as game- and version-specific experiments, not general performance fixes; a recommendation should name the game and mod version and account for whether the hardware can maintain the target. Choosing an emulator or changing setup
EmuDeck documents selecting Ryujinx or Yuzu per game, but the cited documentation does not establish a current, universal Steam Deck performance winner. A meaningful comparison needs a named game, emulator build, game version, settings, and measures such as frame pacing, shader stutter, graphics correctness, compatibility, and setup support. EmuDeck: Ryujinx on SteamOS
EmuDeck places Switch ROMs in Emulation/roms/switch; the Emulation directory can be on internal storage or an SD card. Its guide also documents Ryujinx keys and firmware setup. Those are setup details, not evidence that moving a game to an SD card or buying one improves emulation speed. The guide describes updating Ryujinx through EmuDeck or the application’s update mechanisms; check current project and package sources because emulator availability and maintenance can change. Async shader compilation is not a simple cure
Ryujinx’s FAQ says asynchronous shader compilation can introduce graphical glitches and does not eliminate stutter; the project documentation says its developers do not plan to implement it in the main project, though outside contributions may be reviewed. Avoid treating async shaders as a standard setting to enable for a guaranteed smooth experience. Ryujinx FAQ & Troubleshooting
