The Steam Deck can bring emulated games into your Steam library or a dedicated front end, but EmuDeck is a setup helper—not a source of games—and you supply any ROM and BIOS files. Expect to organize files and adjust settings for some games; the available documentation does not establish that every system or title will run smoothly.
What EmuDeck does—and what it does not
EmuDeck describes itself as “an installation script that helps you get started with emulation.” It installs and configures emulator software and related tools; it does not include games. You provide your own ROMs and, where an emulator requires them, BIOS files. EmuDeck Help
That distinction matters when weighing the Deck as an emulation device: the hardware is only part of the experience. You also need game files you are entitled to use, a place to store them, and a little time to configure how they appear and behave.
How much setup is involved?
EmuDeck’s SteamOS installation guide recommends a series of hands-on steps. Its Easy Mode is intended for people new to emulation, but it does not eliminate file placement or library choices. You can customize storage locations and how the setup integrates with Steam. EmuDeck’s SteamOS installation guide and EmuDeck’s desktop installation guide

- Switch to Desktop Mode. The SteamOS guide uses Desktop Mode to run the installer and manage files.

In Steam ROM Manager, select the parsers for the systems you want and save the chosen entries to Steam. Alternatively, use EmulationStation-DE as a dedicated emulation front end; you can choose either or both.
The guide supports an SD card workflow, but a card is optional. The documentation does not establish a required capacity, speed class, brand, or model, so choose removable storage based on the size of your own library rather than treating a particular card as a prerequisite. ROMs, BIOS files, and legal considerations
EmuDeck says users must provide their own ROM and BIOS files. It notes that laws differ by country, says emulation is generally legal, and says downloading games you do not own is not. That is EmuDeck’s general guidance, not a complete legal analysis for every jurisdiction; check the laws that apply where you live and how you obtain and use files. EmuDeck Help

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Who should buy the Deck for emulation?
- A good fit: You want a portable PC that can also run emulators, already have lawful access to the files you plan to use, and are willing to manage folders, choose a front end, and adjust settings when needed.
- A less suitable fit: You expect a ready-to-play collection, a completely hands-off setup, or a guarantee that every game will work smoothly without configuration.
For the right buyer, the appeal is a flexible handheld and a choice of ways to organize an emulation library. The trade-off is that setup, files, and game-specific troubleshooting remain your responsibility.
