How do I clean the SNES console exterior?
For dust and ordinary grime on the console shell, Nintendo recommends a soft cloth slightly dampened with water. Let the console dry completely before using it again. Nintendo’s cartridge-based-system guidance covers NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 hardware; it says, “To clean, use a soft slightly damp cloth. Allow the component to dry completely before using again. (Use water only.)” Nintendo’s health and safety guidance.
As a cautious application of that advice, keep moisture away from openings, ventilation slots, and cartridge connectors. Do not spray cleaner onto the console or let liquid run into it.
How should I handle and clean SNES cartridge contacts?
Nintendo advises keeping Game Pak connectors free of dirt and moisture, not touching the connectors with your fingers, and not blowing on them. Before insertion, inspect the cartridge’s edge connector for foreign material. If you see debris, do not push the cartridge into the slot or scrape the contacts; Nintendo’s guidance does not recommend a solvent-based cleaning method.

Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Do not clean with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.” That means isopropyl alcohol is not Nintendo-approved cartridge cleaning advice, even though some community repair guides recommend it.
An iFixit community guide describes opening a cartridge and using isopropyl alcohol or Brasso. This is a separate repair approach, not manufacturer guidance, and it conflicts with Nintendo’s warning about alcohol and other solvents on Game Paks. Opening a cartridge or using a chemical on its contacts carries risks; if deeper repair seems necessary, consider an experienced repairer rather than treating community advice as Nintendo’s recommendation.

How do I clean the SNES cartridge slot?
Nintendo’s guidance says to keep connectors dry and clean, but it does not provide a wet-cleaning procedure for the cartridge slot. Do not blow into the slot or put liquid or solvent inside it. If you can see foreign material, avoid forcing a cartridge into the console; seek help from someone experienced with console repair if debris cannot be addressed without risking damage.
What about the Super NES Cleaning Kit?
A historical Super NES manual documents a dedicated cleaning kit, showing that such an accessory existed. The manual record does not establish that the kit is currently sold or that products now advertised under similar names are authentic or compatible. The historical manual material is evidence of past availability, not a recommendation to use a particular present-day product.

How can I prevent cartridge and console problems?
- Turn the Control Deck off before loading or removing a Game Pak, and insert cartridges without force.
- Remove the Game Pak after playing, as Nintendo advises.
- Keep the console’s ventilation slots uncovered.
- Store and use the console away from humid or dusty locations; avoid impacts and temperature extremes.
- Handle cartridges by their shells and keep fingers, moisture, and blowing breath away from the edge connectors.
These precautions follow Nintendo’s health and safety guidance for NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 systems.
