Virtual reality (VR) replaces your view of the surrounding world with a simulated, interactive environment, usually through a headset. Today, consumer VR is used for gaming, fitness, social experiences and entertainment, while education, productivity and healthcare are additional areas of use. For a first headset, the key choice is whether you want a standalone system such as Meta Quest or a headset built for a PlayStation 5, such as PlayStation VR2.
What is virtual reality?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines VR as an immersive virtual-world experience that may require a headset to completely replace a user’s surrounding view with a simulated, immersive and interactive environment. In practical terms, you see and interact with a digital space instead of looking at the room around you.
That distinguishes VR from augmented reality (AR): VR can replace the surrounding view, while AR overlays digital imagery on the real world. Mixed reality combines digital content with a view of the physical environment; Meta’s developer materials include mixed-reality experiences among the capabilities of its platform.
How does a VR headset work?
A headset presents a simulated environment in front of your eyes and lets you interact with it. Depending on the experience and device, interaction can use handheld controllers or hand tracking. Meta’s developer documentation also identifies spatial audio as a supported part of VR experiences.

The details vary by platform and app. Meta Quest is designed to run VR and mixed-reality applications on the headset itself, while compatible PC streaming can be an additional mode. PlayStation VR2 is designed to work with a PS5 rather than operate as a standalone console replacement.
What can you do in VR?
Games and entertainment
Gaming is a central consumer use for both Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2. Meta also describes entertainment experiences as part of the Quest ecosystem. Which games are available depends on the platform, so check the relevant store and compatibility details before choosing a headset.

Fitness and social experiences
Meta identifies fitness and social interaction among Quest activities. VR can place a workout or social experience in a simulated setting, but the specific activity and interaction options depend on the app and device.
Productivity and education
Meta’s developer materials list productivity and education as supported experience categories. Their presence in a platform’s ecosystem does not, by itself, establish that a particular app is effective for every task or learner.

In an April 15, 2024 announcement about an education product for Quest, Meta reported a Morehouse College comparison from 2022: students who learned in VR had an average final test score of 85, compared with 78 for students learning in person. That is a result reported for a named institution and comparison; it should not be read as a universal estimate of VR’s effect on education.
Healthcare and professional training
The FDA describes medical extended reality (XR), which includes VR-related applications, as a regulated area with potential uses ranging from neurology to orthopedics and radiology. Examples include rehabilitation that simulates real-life situations and systems that overlay medical images during surgery. Those examples describe applications, not blanket approval of consumer headsets or apps for medical use.

Meta Quest or PlayStation VR2?
These systems serve different needs: Quest is a standalone platform, while PlayStation VR2 is for people who want VR gaming on a PS5. The comparison below reflects the platforms’ stated roles; current prices, stock and exact technical specifications vary and are not included here.

Before buying either system, check the current product information for the specific model and region. Compare the games you want, tracking and interaction options, display and comfort, prescription-lens options, and the full setup cost—including the required platform, games, accessories and replacement parts. Those details can differ by model and change over time.

Is VR worth it?
VR is most likely to be worthwhile if you want experiences built around being inside a simulated environment and the available games or apps match what you plan to do. The choice is also shaped by what you already own: Quest does not require a game console, whereas PS VR2 requires a PS5.
Think beyond the headset alone. Review the platform’s library, the comfort and interaction features that matter to you, and the cost of the complete setup. If you are mainly interested in one specific game or app, confirm that it is available for your chosen headset before purchasing.
Is VR safe?
Safety depends on the device, the activity and the person using it. The FDA advises patients, caregivers and health professionals to weigh benefits and risks because benefits and long-term effects of medical XR continue to be studied. That caution is especially important when VR is being considered for a health condition or treatment.
For a medical product, check its intended use, authorization status, contraindications, supervision requirements and data handling. A consumer headset or app should not be assumed to be an authorized medical device simply because similar technology has healthcare applications.
