Start by lowering the settings that make the game draw or process more: Java players should reduce render distance and, separately, simulation distance; Bedrock players can choose Simple graphics and switch off costly visual effects. There is no universally best chunk count or preset—change one setting at a time, then keep the highest values your device handles smoothly.
First, check whether you have low FPS or a different kind of lag
Low FPS means the game is not drawing frames smoothly on your device. Server or network problems can instead cause high ping, delayed block actions, or slow world activity even while the picture looks smooth. Microsoft distinguishes client performance—visuals and frame rate—from server performance, including game ticks and world simulation. If the world responds slowly but your frame rate is steady, lowering graphics settings may not solve the problem. Microsoft Learn explains the distinction.
To test an FPS change, stand in the same area and change one option at a time. A setting that helps one device may make little difference on another; results also vary with edition, platform, world, add-ons, and server settings.

Lower render distance first
Render distance controls how far away the client draws blocks, entities, and other visible objects. A higher distance means more rendering work and can reduce frame rate. Lower it in the video settings, then raise it gradually if performance remains smooth and you want more of the world in view. The right setting depends on your hardware and the world you are playing; official guidance does not establish one chunk count as best for everyone. Microsoft Learn describes render distance and its performance cost.

Set simulation distance independently
Java’s simulation distance is separate from render distance. It limits how far from the player entities, blocks, and fluids are updated. Lowering it can reduce CPU work while leaving render distance higher, so distant terrain remains visible without as much world activity. Try lowering simulation distance if the game struggles even after you reduce render distance; increase it only as far as your system and preferred gameplay allow. Mojang says separating simulation from rendering allows higher render distance with less CPU load.
The trade-off is functional as well as visual: areas beyond simulation distance are not updated. Choose a value that preserves the nearby world activity you need, rather than treating simulation distance as another graphics slider.

Use experimental graphics options cautiously
Do not switch Java’s experimental Prefer Vulkan option on solely to chase higher FPS. Mojang recommends Default unless players are troubleshooting, and warns that Prefer Vulkan can reduce performance or cause instability on some systems. See Mojang’s current Java requirements and graphics API guidance.
Best starting settings for Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s available controls vary by platform, so use the options exposed by your version. Minecraft Help’s low-resource recommendations are to choose Simple graphics, lower FOV below its default 60 degrees, and turn off Fancy Leaves, Fancy Bubbles, Render Clouds, and FOV Can Be Altered By Gameplay. Simple mode also allows Beautiful Skies and Smooth Lighting to be switched off. These changes reduce visual effects in exchange for a simpler image. Minecraft Help lists Bedrock’s video settings and low-resource recommendations.

If you use Vibrant Visuals
Vibrant Visuals uses more resources than the simpler graphics choices. If it slows gameplay, select Favor Performance or reduce the custom effects. You can also switch to Simple or Fancy graphics if those choices are available on your device. Minecraft Help explains the Vibrant Visuals options.
Try fewer particles if performance drops during effects
Particle effects can add rendering work, particularly at high render distances. If frame rate dips around dense effects, lower particle density if your version offers that control. This is an optional adjustment; test it separately so you can tell whether it helps on your device. Microsoft Learn notes the performance cost of particles.

Compare the main settings and their trade-offs
| Setting | Potential performance effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Java render distance | Lower distance reduces the visible area the client must draw. | Less distant terrain and activity are visible. |
| Java simulation distance | Lower distance can reduce CPU load from world updates. | Entities, blocks, and fluids outside the selected range are not updated. |
| Bedrock graphics mode and effects | Simple graphics and disabled effects use fewer resources than more elaborate visuals. | The scene has fewer visual effects; exact options depend on platform. |
| Bedrock Vibrant Visuals | Favor Performance or reduced custom effects can ease the mode’s resource demand. | Reducing effects changes the visual presentation. |
| Particle density | Lower density can reduce work from particle effects. | Fewer effects are visible. |
Change settings in a useful order
- Confirm the symptom. If frame rate is low, test graphics settings; if block actions or world activity are delayed while the picture stays smooth, consider server or network performance instead.
- Adjust the edition-specific settings. In Java, lower render distance, then test simulation distance separately. In Bedrock, try Simple graphics and disable the listed effects; reduce FOV below 60 degrees if that suits you.
- Test in the same place. Keep the world and situation as similar as possible between changes, and adjust only one setting before judging the result.
- Restore quality gradually. Raise one setting at a time until performance becomes uncomfortable, then return to the last smooth value.
If settings do not improve performance
Bedrock: rule out software and add-on issues
Minecraft Help’s troubleshooting sequence recommends updating Minecraft and the operating system, updating Windows graphics drivers when playing on Windows, checking that the device meets minimum requirements, temporarily disabling add-ons, and then adjusting video settings. Changing graphics options will not necessarily help if an outdated driver, add-on, or device limitation is the cause. See Minecraft Help’s Bedrock performance troubleshooting steps.
Java: compare your device with Mojang’s published baseline
Mojang’s Java system-requirements article, published July 21, 2026, sets a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings and a recommended target of 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. These are system targets, not a promise of the frame rate an individual player will get. Mojang also states that hardware below minimum requirements has no performance or visual-quality guarantee. If your device falls below the published baseline, settings changes may have limited effect. Check Mojang’s full Java Edition requirements.
