Atari VCS Teardown: What’s Inside and What You Can Upgrade

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Atari VCS is a compact x86 PC and console hybrid built around AMD’s Ryzen Embedded R1606G, with integrated Radeon Vega graphics. Its storage and memory can be upgraded, but the SSD is the easier job: the internal M.2 slot supports SATA drives, while reaching the SO-DIMM memory slots requires more extensive disassembly. That hardware makes the VCS useful for retro gaming, emulation and light PC tasks—not a strong choice for modern AAA games.

What the Atari VCS teardown reveals

Inside the VCS is a small PC-style system rather than a conventional game-console board built around a mobile or ARM chip. The teardown review describes a retail configuration with 8GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage, plus an internal SATA M.2 slot for adding an SSD. It also found SO-DIMM memory slots on the underside of the motherboard.

The system’s PC Mode can boot Windows or Linux, giving it more operating-system flexibility than a typical retro console. That does not make it a high-performance gaming PC: the integrated graphics and low-core-count processor set real limits.

AMD Ryzen Embedded R1606G specifications

AMD’s 2021 product brief specifies the R1606G as a two-core, four-thread embedded processor with Radeon Vega graphics. Its base frequency is 2.6GHz, with a maximum one-thread boost frequency of 3.5GHz. AMD lists three graphics compute units, configurable 12–25W TDP and DDR4-2400 memory support.

Specification R1606G
CPU cores and threads 2 cores, up to 4 threads
CPU frequency 2.6GHz base; up to 3.5GHz maximum one-thread boost
Integrated graphics Radeon Vega, 3 compute units
Configurable TDP 12–25W
Memory support DDR4-2400

These are AMD’s processor-platform specifications, not a promise that every VCS workload will run at boost frequency or perform identically. The VCS review identifies its retail unit as an 8GB RAM, 32GB eMMC configuration. Tom’s Hardware listed a $399 launch price in its 2021 review; that is a historical launch figure, not a current price.

What can you upgrade?

Storage: the simplest meaningful upgrade

The teardown review found an internal M.2 slot for SATA storage and installed a 256GB Crucial SATA M.2 SSD. Treat SATA as the requirement: the review supports SATA M.2 drives, not an assumption that NVMe drives will work. Adding an SSD expands storage beyond the reviewed unit’s 32GB eMMC, but it does not change the processor or graphics capability.

Memory: possible, but more involved

The SO-DIMM slots are on the underside of the motherboard, so upgrading RAM means going deeper into the machine than a storage installation. AMD’s product brief lists DDR4-2400 support for the R1606G platform; confirm that a replacement module is compatible with the VCS before buying, since the review does not establish a maximum supported capacity.

Disassembly: take care with the shell and cables

The teardown exposes Torx fasteners. As you separate the shell, watch for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antenna leads: the wireless module stays attached to the motherboard, while its antenna leads are taped to the plastic top shell. Lift the lid slowly so the taped leads are not pulled or damaged. Reaching the memory slots requires additional disassembly, making it a less approachable first upgrade than the SATA M.2 drive.

Is the Atari VCS really a PC?

In practical terms, yes: it is an x86-based computer with PC operating-system options and PC-style storage and memory expansion, wrapped in a console-oriented Atari enclosure and software layer. PCWorld described it in 2019 as “essentially a low-end PC” built around the R1606G. The useful distinction is that PC hardware and OS flexibility do not guarantee a smooth desktop experience or compatibility with demanding games.

What is it good for—and where does it struggle?

Retro gaming, emulation and lighter tasks

The R1606G gives the VCS more conventional PC capability than the ARM chips found in many inexpensive retro boxes. The cited review describes retro gaming, emulation, streaming and light desktop work as credible uses. These are review-supported use cases, not guarantees for every emulator, operating-system setup or streaming app.

Modern PC games and desktop reliability

The dual-core/four-thread CPU and integrated Vega graphics are the main constraints for modern PC gaming. Tom’s Hardware warned that demanding AAA games from Steam or Epic would be a poor fit for the system’s R1606G and Vega 3 graphics. The review also reported Windows installation as cumbersome and observed browser and Windows instability during testing, so PC Mode should not be mistaken for a polished desktop-PC experience.

Who should consider upgrading a VCS?

  • Storage upgrade: A good fit if you want more room for software or games and are comfortable opening the case carefully; use a SATA M.2 drive.
  • Memory upgrade: More appropriate for someone willing to perform deeper disassembly and verify module compatibility before purchase.
  • AAA gaming: An SSD or RAM upgrade will not overcome the processor and integrated-graphics limits. Choose another system if modern high-end PC games are the priority.

The VCS’s appeal is its mix of Atari presentation, PC-style expansion and operating-system flexibility. Its trade-offs are dated low-end silicon, awkward access to memory and limited performance in modern games.
