Choose Minecraft by matching your device and the edition your friends use. Bedrock Edition is the practical pick for playing across supported consoles, Windows PCs, and mobile devices. Java Edition suits Windows, Mac, and Linux players who want community mods, custom servers, or older game releases. On Windows, the Java & Bedrock PC bundle includes both editions; check your account before buying.
Java or Bedrock: which edition fits you?
The editions do not share ordinary multiplayer sessions. Your friends’ device is not enough to determine compatibility: ask which edition they launch. A player who owns both editions must switch to the one their group is using.
| Decision | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Supported devices | Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile; check the current store for your device |
| Cross-play | Java players on Windows, Mac, and Linux | Players on supported Bedrock devices; Java players cannot join a Bedrock session |
| Customization | Broad community mod ecosystem, custom servers, and access to older releases | Curated Marketplace content and add-ons |
| Controls | PC-oriented; the reviewed official store comparison says controller support is not built in | Controller and touch support |
| Local split-screen | Not included in Minecraft’s official edition comparison | Available on console versions, according to Minecraft’s guide |
| Hosting | Java Realms or self-hosted and custom servers | Realms Plus or supported Bedrock server options |
| Best fit | PC players prioritizing mods, server choice, or older versions | Groups wanting to play across supported console, mobile, and PC devices |
This comparison follows Minecraft’s Java-or-Bedrock guide, its overview, and its store comparison. Individual features can vary by platform and version.
Choose based on who you want to play with
Pick Bedrock for a mixed-device group
Bedrock is the safer starting point when friends use a mix of supported consoles, phones, tablets, or Windows PCs. Check that everyone is using Bedrock and confirm the exact platform supports the features your group needs.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Pick Java for a PC group focused on mods or servers
Java is the better fit if the group plays on Windows, Mac, or Linux and wants community mods, custom servers, or the option to select older releases. Third-party content comes from outside Minecraft’s curated Marketplace, so choose sources carefully.
What to buy on each platform
Windows PC
The official Minecraft PC offer bundles Java and Bedrock. Before paying, sign into the Microsoft account associated with any previous purchase and check the Launcher or Microsoft Store. Minecraft’s ownership help page says an owned edition appears with Play or Install; an edition not owned appears with Buy. The PC bundle release date listed in that help page is June 7, 2022.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

Mac or Linux
Minecraft lists Java for Mac and Linux. Bedrock does not have the same broad desktop availability on those systems, so check the current download page and the relevant platform information before purchasing.
Console or mobile
These platforms use Bedrock. Buy through the store for the specific device you will play on, and verify the console generation and region. If online multiplayer is important, check whether that console requires its own online-play subscription; Minecraft notes that platform subscriptions may be sold separately.

Customization, convenience, and family settings
Java’s community mod ecosystem and custom servers offer flexibility, but players need to assess third-party downloads and server communities themselves. Bedrock’s Marketplace offers curated maps, skins, and mini-games purchased with Minecoins, while add-ons provide another customization route. The trade-off is more curation and convenience rather than Java’s open-ended third-party ecosystem.
For children, review platform and Microsoft account controls and talk through where multiplayer happens. Minecraft’s Parents’ Guide covers family and purchase guidance. These controls do not replace checking the particular server or third-party content a player wants to use.
