E-Day: Marcus and Dom at the beginning
E-Day goes back to the Locust emergence, 14 years before the first Gears of War. Its focus on Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago makes it the choice for players who want to see the franchise’s central friendship at its origin. The setting and character premise come from Xbox’s official E-Day listing.
Gears 5: Kait’s investigation
Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz as she breaks from the squad to investigate her connection to the enemy. Pick it if you want that character-led campaign rather than a prequel about Marcus and Dom. Xbox’s Gears 5 listing describes the premise.
How the campaign co-op compares
Campaign party size may decide the choice for a group: E-Day advertises up to four players online, while Gears 5 supports three-player campaign co-op. Both listings include split-screen play; Xbox specifies that E-Day’s two-player split-screen is console-only. Check the relevant E-Day and Gears 5 product pages for platform-specific details.

Horde, Escape, and Versus
E-Day’s announced lineup
E-Day’s advertised PvE centerpiece is Horde Siege. Xbox Wire describes it as a 12-player experience divided into three squads, while the product page presents it as an evolution of the series’ wave-survival mode. Its Versus offering brings new maps and refined 4v4 modes, with movement mechanics adapted to E-Day. These are publisher descriptions, not a comparative playtest. Gears 5’s listed modes
Gears 5 offers Horde and Escape alongside Versus. If those are the specific PvE modes you want, its current Xbox listing confirms them.

E-Day is listed for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with Steam also named by Xbox Wire. Xbox Wire describes cloud access via Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Gears 5 is listed for Xbox One as well as Xbox Series X|S, making it the relevant option if you are playing on Xbox One. For PC or cloud access, check the current platform and service listings because availability and eligibility can change.
As of October 3, 2026, E-Day Premium Edition early access had begun on October 1. Xbox Wire says its worldwide launch is October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC; its September 17 update says Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can join from October 6. What to know about E-Day’s launch feature set
The Coalition’s September 30 update says Season 1 is planned as an eight-week season through December 1, with Ranked Versus scheduled to launch October 13. It also says the new sandbox was built from scratch and identifies Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, some legacy weapons, Private Lobbies, and leaderboards as absent at launch. These are the publisher’s stated plans and launch omissions, not a guarantee that the feature set will remain unchanged. See the September 30 Gears of War update.

- Choose E-Day if you want Marcus and Dom’s origin story, a campaign for up to four online players, or you are interested in Horde Siege.
- Choose Gears 5 if you want Kait’s campaign, a three-player campaign party, Horde and Escape, or Xbox One support.
- Wait for more player feedback if your decision depends on campaign quality, stability, frame-rate consistency, or long-term multiplayer population. Official feature and launch materials do not establish those outcomes, and E-Day’s worldwide launch is still ahead as of October 3, 2026.
For technical expectations, Xbox describes E-Day as a third-person cover shooter built on Unreal Engine 5, targeting 4K and up to 60 FPS in campaign and multiplayer. Those are publisher specifications, not independent performance results. Xbox’s Gears 5 page lists reduced load times, Instant Resume, variable refresh rate support, and 120 FPS in Versus for its Series X|S version.
