Marvel’s Wolverine has six Special Techniques, and you can equip four at a time. There is no official best-to-worst ranking: the right picks depend on whether you need to control a crowd, interrupt an attacker, stay alive, break defenses, or close distance. Here’s what each move does and how to choose a set from its documented role.
All six Special Techniques at a glance
| Technique | Documented role | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Tornado Spin | High-damage, multi-hit spin against surrounding enemies; builds Rage. Upgrades can increase damage, break blocks, and interrupt attacks. | When enemies are clustering around you. |
| Knee Breaker | Strikes an enemy’s head to stagger them and interrupt attacks. Upgrades can increase stagger damage, speed recharge, and add area stagger. | When stopping an attacker or building stagger matters. |
| Relentless | Focuses the healing factor to restore Health faster for a limited time. Upgrades can shrug off basic attacks, extend its duration, and grant a near-death healing burst. | When you need temporary sustain in a difficult stretch. |
| Spiral Strike | A high-damage attack that drills through foes and can break through enemies when surrounded. Upgrades allow up to three rapid uses. | When surrounded and trying to punch through the group. |
| Overwhelm | Charges forward, tackles, and mounts an opponent. Upgrades can knock other enemies back, chain after a Barrage kill, and recharge faster. | When you want to engage a target aggressively. |
| Brutal Assault | Dashes toward a target and delivers a combo that breaks through enemy defenses. Upgrades can add strikes and build Rage with kills. | When an enemy’s defenses are the problem. |
These functions and upgrade effects are described in PlayStation’s Marvel’s Wolverine combat guide. They describe different jobs, not a measured damage ranking.
Which Techniques are best?
PlayStation’s guide does not rank the moves or publish comparative performance tests. The suggestions below are practical inferences from their stated functions, not a universal or boss-specific best-in-slot list.
- For a crowd: Tornado Spin is the clearest fit because its description explicitly targets surrounding enemies. Spiral Strike is another option when you need to drill through foes while surrounded.
- To interrupt and stagger: Knee Breaker is the direct choice; its stated purpose includes staggering an enemy and interrupting attacks.
- For more survivability: Relentless temporarily speeds healing, making it the defensive pick.
- Against defenses: Brutal Assault is described as breaking through enemy defenses.
- For forward engagement: Overwhelm charges into and mounts an opponent.
With four slots and six options, choose around the problems you encounter rather than trying to carry every role. A crowd-focused set could include Tornado Spin and Spiral Strike; use the other slots for the need you face most, such as interruption, healing, defense breaking, or aggressive engagement.

Equipping, unlocking, and upgrading
The official guide says you can equip up to four Techniques. Some unlock through story progression and others require reaching a certain level, but the guide does not give a complete unlock-level chart. Technique Points are used to upgrade their effects.
Because unlock conditions vary, check the in-game Technique menu as you progress instead of relying on an unofficial level list as definitive. Upgrades can change a move’s utility—for example, Knee Breaker can gain area stagger, while Spiral Strike can gain rapid follow-up uses—so revisit your four-slot selection when a new effect becomes available.

Controls and the Bull Rush discrepancy
Insomniac’s accessibility features page lists a Special Techniques Mode that switches between Hold and Toggle, and says shortcuts can be assigned for every Technique slot. The page was updated June 2, 2026; the Hold/Toggle setting is not marked as an update-only feature in its list.
There is also a naming discrepancy in pre-release coverage: PlayStation’s June 2, 2026 gameplay post mentioned Bull Rush alongside Tornado Spin, while the current official guide’s six-move list omits Bull Rush. The available official descriptions do not establish whether it was renamed or removed, so the six techniques listed above are the names in the current guide.
