The Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 is a 2007 desktop-replacement gaming notebook built around two GeForce 8600M GT GPUs in SLI and a 17-inch, 1680×1050 display. Its period performance could be respectable once SLI and updated drivers were configured, but Laptop Mag’s 2008 tests show why it is now best understood as a restoration project or a piece of gaming-PC history—not a practical choice for current gaming.
What are the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 specifications?
Toshiba’s America Information Systems specification sheet, dated November 12, 2007, lists the core hardware and connections below. Laptop Mag’s March 24, 2008 review supplies the reported memory configuration, drives, weight and webcam resolution.
| Component | X205-SLI4 specification | Source and qualification |

How well did it game?
In Laptop Mag’s 2008 testing, the dual-GPU design delivered strong results in some period games, but performance depended on the title, resolution and settings. The review says SLI had to be enabled and five hotfixes plus driver updates installed before the notebook delivered its full performance. These are historical benchmark results, not a prediction for games or operating systems available today.
| Test | Reported result | Conditions in Laptop Mag’s 2008 review |
|---|---|---|
| PCMark Vantage | 3,120 | Overall benchmark score; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| F.E.A.R. | 135 fps | AutoDetect at 1024×768; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| F.E.A.R. | 84 fps | Maximum settings at 1024×768; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| 3DMark06 | 7,186 | 1280×800; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| 3DMark06 | 6,528 | 1680×1050, the display’s native resolution; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| Call of Duty 4 | 21 fps average | 1680×1050, high settings; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| Call of Duty 4 | 24 fps average | 1280×1024; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| Crysis | 30 fps average | 1280×1024, medium/optimum settings; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
| Crysis | 14 fps average | 1680×1050; Laptop Mag, 2008 |
The contrast between the F.E.A.R. and Crysis results captures the machine’s limits: older or less demanding tests could run quickly at reduced resolution, while Crysis fell to 14 fps at the panel’s native resolution. The results support a period-gaming verdict, not a claim that the X205-SLI4 can handle current PC games.

Was the X205-SLI4 worth its price?
Price depended on which X205 configuration and point in its launch cycle a buyer was considering. Ecoustics reported the X205 series starting at $1,999.99 in 2007. Engadget reported launch prices of about $2,000 for the SLI1 and $2,400 for the SLI3; neither figure is an exact SLI4 launch price. Laptop Mag listed a $2,199 review price in 2008, but that is not proof of the SLI4’s original launch price.
| Price reference | What it applies to | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| $1,999.99 starting price | X205 series starting price; not an SLI4-specific quote | Ecoustics, 2007 launch announcement |
| About $2,000 | SLI1 launch price | Engadget, 2007 launch coverage |
| $2,400 | SLI3 launch price | Engadget, 2007 launch coverage |
| $2,199 | Laptop Mag’s review price for the reviewed X205-SLI4 | Laptop Mag, 2008 review; review price, not a verified launch price |
Laptop Mag’s verdict was that the notebook had gaming ability but cost too much for the performance it offered. The review praised its display, extensive ports, storage and Harman Kardon audio, while noting that cheaper gaming laptops offered similar performance and criticizing the HD-DVD drive in place of Blu-ray. For a buyer evaluating the machine in its own era, the premium bought a large screen, dual graphics and a broad feature set, but the review did not consider the performance competitive enough to justify the price.

Can you upgrade or restore an X205-SLI4?
Memory, drives, battery and adapter are the most directly relevant replacement or upgrade categories. Toshiba specifies PC2-5300 DDR2 memory and two slots, while Laptop Mag reports two 160GB 7,200-rpm drives in its reviewed unit. The available specifications do not establish a maximum supported memory capacity, drive thickness, or every drive-interface detail, so verify those against the specific machine and replacement listing rather than assuming a part fits.
Memory
Look for compatible DDR2 PC2-5300 SO-DIMMs and confirm the module type and capacity supported by the installed system before buying. The documented two slots do not, by themselves, establish the maximum total RAM.

Storage
The review unit had two 160GB 7,200-rpm hard drives. A replacement listing described as a 2.5-inch SATA drive may be a useful search starting point, but confirm interface, thickness, capacity support and physical fit for the particular X205-SLI4 before ordering.
Battery
Toshiba’s specification lists a 6000mAh lithium-ion battery. Match the replacement to the exact X205-SLI4 model and battery part number; capacity alone does not confirm connector, shape or electrical compatibility. A replacement also cannot be assumed to restore the original runtime if the machine has other power or battery-condition problems.

AC adapter
The published adapter rating is 180W at 19V/9.5A. Check connector dimensions and polarity against the individual listing and the laptop before purchase; the voltage and wattage rating alone do not verify plug compatibility.

- Large, high-resolution screen: The 1680×1050 17-inch panel was a central part of the desktop-replacement design, but running games at native resolution reduced performance in the review’s Crysis test.
- Short tested battery runtime: Laptop Mag measured 1 hour and 16 minutes in its DVD rundown test in 2008, versus the 1 hour and 48 minute desktop-replacement average reported by the same review. This is a result from that test and period, not a guaranteed runtime for every surviving battery.
- Heavy chassis: The 9.4-pound weight reported by Laptop Mag makes the machine a desktop replacement rather than an easy travel laptop.
- Useful period connectivity and audio: Six USB 2.0 ports, legacy video and FireWire connections, plus the four-speaker-and-subwoofer system give it a distinctive feature set for its era.
- Obsolete optical format: HD-DVD software and drive are of historical interest, but the format is no longer a current media choice; Laptop Mag specifically treated the absence of Blu-ray as a drawback.
Is the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 still good for gaming?
Not as a sensible modern gaming purchase. Its dual 8600M GT SLI graphics and benchmark scores belong to 2007–08, and the period review already showed frame rates dropping at native resolution in a demanding game. It may still be useful for restoring or revisiting software from its era, provided the hardware, drivers and game are compatible, but the cited benchmarks do not establish compatibility with current titles. For a restoration-minded owner, prioritize a working cooling system, compatible replacement parts and realistic expectations over the SLI label alone.
