SkyCity to Launch Formal Sale Process for Adelaide Casino

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SkyCity Entertainment Group says it will shortly begin a formal process to seek proposals for its Adelaide casino business, with UBS leading the process. The announcement is not a sale: SkyCity has named no bidders, disclosed no price or deadline, and given no completion date. It also says negotiations with South Australia’s casino regulator over a binding agreement are well advanced.

What SkyCity has announced

In a 30 September 2026 market release, SkyCity said credible interested parties had made inquiries since it announced a strategic review of the Adelaide business on 20 August. It intends to invite proposals from those parties and others through a formal sale process led by UBS. The company’s wording is that the process will “shortly commence”; it did not give a specific launch date. SkyCity’s 30 September release

This is an effort to seek proposals, not confirmation that a binding bid has been received or that the casino has been sold. The release does not identify interested parties or a preferred buyer.

What is known—and not known—about the sale

Question What SkyCity has disclosed
Who is leading the process? UBS, according to SkyCity’s 30 September 2026 release.
Are there interested parties? SkyCity says credible parties made inquiries after the strategic review was announced. It has not named them.
What is the sale price or valuation? Not stated in the 30 September release.
When are proposals due? Not stated in the 30 September release.
When would a sale complete? Not stated in the 30 September release; the announcement does not guarantee a sale will result.

SkyCity also reported a A$43 million Adelaide carrying-value write-down in its 20 August 2026 investor presentation. That is an accounting adjustment, not a disclosed asking price, valuation for the process, or offer. SkyCity’s 20 August 2026 investor presentation

Why the regulatory agreement matters

The sale process is running alongside work to resolve regulatory matters. On 30 September, SkyCity said it was well advanced in negotiating a binding agreement with the South Australian Commissioner for Liquor and Gambling, consistent with non-binding heads of agreement announced on 19 June 2026. The later statement describes negotiations; it does not say a binding deed has been signed. SkyCity’s 30 September release

The regulator’s action followed an independent review led by retired Supreme Court Judge Brian Martin and other issues identified by Consumer and Business Services South Australia (CBS). CBS described failures involving anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations, gambling harm minimisation, and organisational culture. CBS’s 19 June 2026 release

What the June heads of agreement proposed

The 19 June announcement by SkyCity and SkyCity Adelaide described non-binding heads of agreement with the Commissioner. The proposed terms included a A$21 million fine, payable in three A$7 million instalments, along with governance, compliance, and operational commitments. The parties said they expected to finalise a binding tripartite deed; the June announcement was not itself confirmation that the deed had been signed. SkyCity’s 19 June 2026 announcement

Proposed governance measures included an independent Adelaide board, locally accountable leadership, and an independent compliance auditor. They are proposed commitments in the settlement framework, not evidence that every reform has been completed. In the CBS release, the Commissioner said: “This should send a clear message to South Australians that the failings of the past are completely unacceptable, and we are expecting them—as the owners and operators of South Australia’s only casino—to do better in future.” CBS’s 19 June 2026 release

How the announcement developed

  • 19 June 2026: SkyCity and SkyCity Adelaide announced non-binding heads of agreement with the South Australian regulator, including the proposed fine and governance and compliance measures.
  • 20 August 2026: SkyCity announced a strategic review of its Adelaide business. Its investor presentation said final approval for the Adelaide B3 (Building a Better Business) compliance programme was then expected in early FY28, citing the pace of design approvals and casino-system delays. The timing was a dated company expectation, not a statement that approval has since been granted.
  • 30 September 2026: SkyCity said regulatory negotiations were well advanced and that it would shortly commence a formal sale process led by UBS.

The August presentation’s early-FY28 expectation helps explain why regulatory remediation remains relevant to the business’s future, but it should not be read as a current completion date or as proof that the programme is finished. SkyCity’s 20 August 2026 investor presentation

What to watch next

Until SkyCity provides further updates, the main developments to look for are whether the formal process opens, whether proposals are received, and whether the parties finalise the binding regulatory deed. Any eventual assessment of proposals would depend on information not yet public, such as offer value and conditions, regulatory approvals, funding certainty, and arrangements for staff and continued operations. These are relevant questions for a future transaction, not details SkyCity has disclosed about any current bidder.
