Nicolas Cage says Spider-Noir nearly stalled because decision-makers were nervous about a black-and-white series. His proposed solution, inspired by Godzilla Minus One’s color release and black-and-white reissue, was to offer the show in both formats. Cage says the idea helped get the series made; the available reporting does not independently confirm that it determined the studio’s decision.
Why did Cage say Spider-Noir was nearly not made?
At Dallas Fan Expo, Cage recalled that the project was in danger because of concerns about presenting it in monochrome. ComicBook.com reported him saying, “They weren’t going to make the show,” followed by, “They were terrified of the black and white. they were so nervous about it.” He also described contacting producer Jen Salke while trying to find a way to move the series forward. That is Cage’s account of the difficulty, not a publicly confirmed explanation from the studio. The reporting establishes that he characterized the format as a concern and credited his proposal with helping; it does not independently establish the studio’s internal deliberations or prove the show would have been canceled without his suggestion.
How did Godzilla Minus One figure into his proposal?
Cage said he had watched Godzilla Minus One in color and then seen its black-and-white reissue. The monochrome presentation, he said, made it feel like an older Godzilla film: “It looked like an old Godzilla movie.” Drawing on that example, he suggested that Spider-Noir could also be offered in color as well as black and white. ComicBook.com reports Cage said the two-format idea helped save the show. Esquire also records his reasoning for the options, but does not independently verify that the proposal was decisive in the greenlight. So “Godzilla Minus One saved Spider-Noir” is best understood as shorthand for Cage’s explanation of how the idea helped address a concern—not as a confirmed studio account of cause and effect.
Why make Spider-Noir in both color and black and white?
Cage described the series’ creative premise as bringing the look and speech of 1930s film noir together with the Spider character. Esquire identifies his live-action character as Ben Reilly, a private investigator. A monochrome presentation suits that noir concept, while color offers a different entry point for viewers less accustomed to black-and-white films.

In Esquire, Cage explained the audience rationale: “You don’t have to only do it in black and white. You could do it in color as well because this is for all ages.” He said he was personally drawn to the monochrome version, but that both presentations worked for different reasons.
