Discovery deal closes and its plans are clear. As of October 3, 2026, the companies expect to close on October 6, subject to customary conditions. No reviewed announcement says a reboot has been decided. A fresh continuity could give new viewers a cleaner way in and let DC build around one long-term vision; the risk is making the projects and continuity already promised feel disposable.
Has the Paramount merger already triggered a DCU reboot?
No. Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a definitive merger agreement on February 27, 2026. On September 30, they said they expected the deal to close October 6, subject to customary closing conditions. That expected closing date is not proof that the transaction is complete, and neither announcement described a DC Studios reboot plan. The February announcement named DC among the combined company’s major properties and spoke broadly about storytelling opportunities, not a specific change to the DCU.
There is a transaction backdrop beyond DC: the Associated Press reported that a federal judge approved a settlement with 12 states that sued over the takeover, alongside the companies’ expected closing date. The AP also reported criticism of the settlement and concerns about market concentration. Those points concern the deal, not what the future owner will do with DC’s stories.
So the case for a reboot is a recommendation about what the new owner should evaluate—not a report of a decision it has made. As of October 3, no reviewed primary source states what the post-close owner will do with DC Studios leadership, the slate, or continuity.

Why a reboot could be the right move
A clean entry point can make the franchise easier to follow
DC has already identified audience clarity as a creative goal. When DC Studios introduced Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters,” in 2023, co-chairman Peter Safran said its stories were designed to “minimize audience confusion and maximize audience engagement across platforms.” That was the studio’s stated intent, not a measured finding that the plan succeeded. But it points to the central challenge: a connected universe has to be welcoming to newcomers as well as rewarding for people who have followed its characters for years.
A reboot could make that promise easier to keep. One clear starting point, a deliberate set of character introductions, and consistent rules about which stories belong to the main continuity could reduce the homework a new viewer thinks they need to do. For a sprawling franchise, that is much like a game series choosing a deliberate onboarding point instead of asking new players to work through every prior entry first. The analogy is about accessibility, not evidence that a screen reboot will increase viewership.

A reset would give the new owner room to choose one long-term direction
A new owner may want to make its own choices about casting, tone, character priorities, and the shape of a multi-year story. A hard reboot offers the most freedom to make those choices coherent from the outset. That is a plausible strategic argument, not a stated Paramount plan; the merger announcement’s general enthusiasm for DC does not establish that the company intends to replace the current continuity.
DC Studios’ 2023 launch plan already anticipated selective continuity: James Gunn said some actors from earlier DC projects would carry over and others would not, while Elseworlds stories could exist outside the main continuity if they were distinctive enough. A reboot would go further than that kind of selective carryover. Its appeal would be a clean, visible rulebook—not a guarantee that every character or performer has to be replaced.

Why an immediate hard reboot could backfire
There are still announced projects in the current DCU
Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6, 2026 shareholder letter lists Man of Tomorrow among its 2027 releases and places the next Batman film beyond 2027. In September, Gunn told GamesRadar+ that The Brave and the Bold was “in no way on hold” and said its script was being worked on. These statements show that the existing slate was still being discussed as of those dates; they do not guarantee that every project will proceed on schedule or that its production timing and creative direction are settled.
Canceling or recasting those projects simply to signal a fresh start could make the existing commitment to a connected universe look temporary. In 2023, Gunn said, “everything from our first project forward will be canon and will be connected.” That statement described the launch plan at that time, not a binding promise that survives every change in ownership. Still, replacing the plan before the new owner explains its strategy risks telling viewers and creative partners that continuity promises have little staying power.

Another reset can cost attention as well as continuity
A clean start may clarify where to begin, but announcing another reset also asks the audience to pay attention to a new set of introductions and rules. That can be worthwhile if the existing direction is no longer the company’s chosen one. It is a poor substitute for a clear creative plan on its own. The reviewed sources provide no audience survey or study that quantifies whether rebooting this screen franchise would improve comprehension, viewership, or revenue, so claims about those effects should remain predictions rather than promises.

| Decision factor | Hard reboot | Continuity-preserving refresh |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point for new viewers | Can establish a single, plainly defined beginning. | Can make a chosen upcoming story an entry point, but must explain what older material still matters. |
| Investment for current viewers | Risks making earlier stories and announced plans feel abandoned. | Can retain more existing character and story investment. |
| Room to preserve current projects and talent | May require changing, delaying, or dropping more of the slate. | Offers more room to keep projects or performers that fit the chosen direction. |
| Creative and operational disruption | Requires the clearest break, with more continuity and casting decisions to settle. | Can limit disruption, but may leave complicated boundary questions about what remains canon. |
My recommendation is to evaluate the refresh first, then choose a hard reboot only if the new owner cannot make the slate and continuity work together under an intelligible set of rules. If it does choose a reboot, it should state what is ending, what—if anything—carries over, and where newcomers should start. If it chooses a refresh, it should identify which current projects remain part of the shared story and explain how a new viewer can enter without catching up on everything.
What DC’s comics history can—and cannot—teach the screen DCU
DC’s publishing history offers more than a choice between preserving every detail and erasing the past. Official DC material discusses major resets such as Crisis on Infinite Earths and The New 52, alongside turns such as Rebirth and Death Metal that put greater emphasis on restoration or realignment. These are useful analogies for how the screen franchise might repair continuity or provide a new entry point; comic-book publishing history does not prove which film strategy will work.
There is a recent example of the comics side explicitly organizing its sprawling history: DC announced New History of the DC Universe in 2025 as a four-issue series. Writer Mark Waid described it as “a chance to realign all of DC’s sprawling continuity into one master timeline.” It is a companion for readers interested in the comics timeline, not a guide to Paramount’s future screen plans.
What the new owner should decide first
- State the goal. Explain whether the priority is a simpler entry point, continuity with the announced slate, a unified creative direction, or some combination. Do not present a clean slate as a strategy by itself.
- Publish clear continuity rules. Tell viewers what counts as part of the main DCU, what sits outside it, and how existing stories relate to the next chapter.
- Address the projects already on the slate. Say which announced films remain planned, what their status is, and how any changes affect the wider story. A shareholder-letter listing or a comment that a script is being worked on is not a guarantee of release.
- Make the entry point visible. Give new viewers an obvious place to begin, whether that is a rebooted first chapter or a current project designed to stand on its own.
That sequence makes the choice legible instead of treating a change in corporate ownership as automatic evidence that the story needs to start over. The strongest case for rebooting the DCU is therefore conditional: the post-merger owner should be willing to start fresh if it cannot make the current universe clear and coherent—but it should explain that decision after the deal closes, rather than announce a reset before its strategy is known.
