That is an unconfirmed rumor, not a release announcement. The concern is what the rumored order could mean for Johto: if Generation 3 returns before Generation 2, Gold, Silver and Crystal might be delayed—or potentially passed over. Nothing in the report establishes that The Pokémon Company has decided to skip them.
What the Pokémon Switch rumor actually claims
In a feature published October 2, 2026, Justin Joy of ComicBook.com attributes the claim to Pokémon leaker @Light_88_: the original Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire would come to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. The report does not provide a primary link to the leaker’s post, and it does not establish independent corroboration. Joy explicitly cautions that the claim is not confirmed or guaranteed. The same feature refers to earlier rumors and an official Japanese Pokémon social-media account as suggesting or teasing Generation 3 as the next revival, but does not identify or quote the post. That material does not verify the alleged October date or prove that Nintendo or The Pokémon Company has settled the order of future releases.
Why a Generation 2 skip would disappoint Johto fans
The feared gap is between Generation 1 and Generation 3: players could see the original Kanto games and then the Hoenn adventures from Ruby and Sapphire, while the Game Boy Color generation set in Johto remains unavailable in the same modern library. Joy argues that Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal deserve a return, drawing on their setting and features rather than on any confirmed release plan.

What made Gold, Silver and Crystal distinct
- Johto introduced 100 new Pokémon.
- The games added a real-time clock, breeding, held items, berries, and the Dark and Steel types.
- After the Johto League, players could return to Kanto, creating a substantial second region to explore.
- Pokémon Crystal offered a playable female protagonist.
Those features help explain the case for bringing the games back, but they do not show that a re-release is planned—or that one would be impossible after a Generation 3 release.
Why the rumored order could matter, but doesn’t settle Johto’s future
If the report is accurate and Generation 3 is the next generation revived, the sequence could leave Johto out of the immediate return. Joy’s worry is that a skip might become permanent: “While nothing is confirmed or guaranteed, I suspect that if The Pokemon Company skips these games, we may never return to Johto on the Switch family.” That is the author’s conditional concern, not a statement of company policy or evidence that Johto has been ruled out.

The distinction matters. A later Johto release remains possible, and the reported Ruby and Sapphire date itself remains unverified in the feature. Nor does the rumor specify the contents of a possible release. Joy mentions Pokémon Emerald and its Battle Frontier while doubting that the Battle Frontier would be included in a hypothetical Ruby and Sapphire re-release; neither its inclusion nor exclusion is established.

The games named in the rumor are the original Game Boy Advance titles. A Game Boy Advance cartridge is not a Nintendo Switch edition, and the rumor does not make an official Switch release available to buy or play. Joy also points to older handhelds and cartridges becoming costly as a reason modern official access would be more convenient for some players, but the feature gives no price figures.
