The ROG Xbox Ally is an ASUS-made Windows gaming handheld shaped around Xbox’s software and services. Microsoft’s play is to make PC handheld gaming feel more like a console without closing off other PC storefronts—not to claim a market victory already achieved.
What is the Xbox Ally?
ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs developed by ASUS and Xbox. The devices were unveiled on June 8, 2025, and went on sale October 16, 2025. Xbox later reported worldwide availability in 45 countries; availability, retailer stock and any purchase bundles can vary by market.
The Xbox interface is a layer over Windows, not a replacement for it. Xbox full-screen mode is designed to make the device easier to navigate with a controller, while Windows keeps access to PC storefronts and applications. Both models support native game play, Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) and Remote Play.
Xbox Ally vs. Xbox Ally X: what changes?
The standard Ally is the lower-priced option; the Ally X is the higher-spec model, with more memory and a more powerful processor. Xbox’s published U.S. estimated retail prices are launch-era 2025 figures, not a guarantee of today’s price.

Which model should you buy?
- Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if its 16GB of RAM, Ryzen Z2 A processor and 512GB SSD meet your needs and you would rather spend less at the published launch price.
- Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want the stronger processor and additional memory headroom, and are comfortable with its substantially higher published U.S. launch price. The official specifications establish the hardware difference, but do not quantify how much faster games run.
Neither model’s listed specifications alone establish battery endurance or a game-by-game performance advantage. Look for independent testing of the specific titles and settings you care about before paying extra on the assumption that one will deliver a particular frame rate or play time.
Can the Xbox Ally play Steam and Epic games?
Yes. Because both devices run Windows 11, they can access supported PC storefronts, including Steam, Epic Games Store and Battle.net. Xbox describes the interface as bringing games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other installed PC stores into one library view; ASUS also identifies Steam, Epic and Battle.net access.
That unified view is a convenience layer, not a single combined purchase or account system. Storefronts may still require their own launchers, sign-ins, updates and game-specific settings. Windows also allows users to download apps such as Discord and Twitch and to use mods, subject to each game, app and mod’s compatibility requirements. This flexibility is central to Microsoft’s pitch: the Ally offers Xbox-oriented navigation while retaining the openness of a Windows PC.

Can you play your Xbox games on the Ally?
Sometimes, depending on the game and how you access it. Xbox Play Anywhere supports more than 1,000 titles across Xbox, PC and handheld, according to Xbox. For supported games, it provides a way to continue across those devices; it does not mean every Xbox console game has a native Windows version.

- Remote Play: Stream gameplay from your Xbox console to the Ally over a network. This is useful for accessing games running on your console rather than installing them locally.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta): Stream supported games from Xbox’s cloud service, subject to service availability, network conditions and applicable access requirements.
Game Pass is supported as part of the Xbox/Windows ecosystem. The catalog and access depend on the subscription and whether a title is available for local PC play or streaming. Xbox said that select markets may include three months of Game Pass Premium or PC Game Pass with a purchase; eligibility and terms vary by market, so check the offer shown by the local retailer or Xbox before buying.

The strategy is to reduce the friction of using Windows on a small, controller-first device, while treating Windows openness as an advantage rather than asking players to leave their PC libraries behind.

- Make Windows feel more like an Xbox. Xbox full-screen mode, a dedicated Xbox button, controller-inspired grips and a Game Bar designed for handheld navigation put console-style controls and entry points at the center of the experience.
- Bring separate PC libraries into one view. The aggregated library can surface Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other installed PC-store games together. That can make finding a game easier, even though it does not erase each store’s account and launcher requirements.
- Keep the Windows freedoms PC players expect. Users can install supported storefronts, apps and mods. Xbox executive Roanne Sones described the intent as access to games and applications “straight from the Xbox experience.”
- Connect handheld play to the Xbox ecosystem. Play Anywhere, Remote Play and Cloud Gaming provide different paths between the handheld, a PC and a console. They are complementary options, not interchangeable guarantees that every Xbox title will run natively on the Ally.
- Signal which games are suited to handheld use. Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program labels titles “Handheld Optimized” or “Mostly Compatible.” Xbox said thousands of titles had labels at launch, giving players a compatibility cue rather than a promise that every game behaves identically.
- Enter through a hardware partner. ASUS supplies the ROG device platform and AMD the Ryzen Z2-series processors, while Microsoft brings the Xbox interface and services. The arrangement lets Xbox pursue handheld reach through a partner-built Windows device rather than a wholly Microsoft-manufactured handheld.
Is the Xbox Ally better than Steam Deck?
The cited official Xbox and ASUS product information does not establish an independent head-to-head winner. It provides no comparative benchmark or test results against Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go, so there is no supported basis here to say the Ally is faster, lasts longer or is the better buy overall.
The meaningful distinction supported by the product information is platform approach: the Ally runs Windows 11 and emphasizes Xbox integration alongside access to other Windows storefronts. That may suit someone who wants those stores and Xbox services on one handheld. To decide between devices, compare independent tests for the games you play, battery results under comparable settings, ergonomics, display preferences, game compatibility and the current prices in your region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the launch does—and does not—show
The Ally is evidence of Microsoft’s effort to make Xbox services and navigation part of the PC handheld experience. ASUS and AMD hardware give that effort a concrete product, and the multi-store Windows environment distinguishes its pitch from a closed console library.
That strategic ambition is not evidence that Microsoft has captured a defined portion of the market. The cited official material does not provide authoritative sell-through, installed-base or market-share figures. Whether the approach wins players will depend on the practical experience—game compatibility, usability, performance, battery life and value—not just the Xbox branding or an aggregated library.
