Joshua Kerry, who is charged with murdering Ann Widdecombe, has also been charged with engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts. The Crown Prosecution Service says the alleged conduct included acts against Nigel Farage MP. Both charges are allegations; no conviction is reported.
What charges has Joshua Kerry faced?
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on 2 October 2026 that Kerry, 28, had been charged with one count of engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism, contrary to section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The CPS says the alleged conduct included acts against Nigel Farage MP. The charge covers an alleged period from 31 May 2024 to 8 July 2026; those dates describe the period specified in the charge announcement, not a proven chronology. The CPS announcement and Counter Terrorism Policing’s announcement give the formal charge and alleged period.
Kerry had previously been charged with one count of murdering Widdecombe. That is a separate charge from the terrorism-preparation charge. In its 2 October statement, the CPS said it had reviewed the evidence and decided to prosecute Kerry; it also stressed that a charging decision is not a finding of fact or an implication of guilt. The proceedings remain active, and Kerry has the right to a fair trial.

The public record has developed over several months. These dated updates distinguish what authorities said at each stage from allegations that have yet to be tested in court.

- 8 July 2026: Widdecombe died at her home in Haytor, on Dartmoor. Sky News reported that a court had previously heard an allegation that she was struck with a hammer 21 times. That is a reported allegation, not a finding of guilt. Counter Terrorism Policing later referred to the date of her death; Sky News reported the court allegation.
- 11 July: Devon and Cornwall Police said a 28-year-old man had been arrested in Rotherham on suspicion of murder. At that point, police said they had no information suggesting terrorism or political motivation, and were not seeking anyone else in connection with the murder. The police statement was an early account, before the later charge and updates.
- 20 July: The CPS announced the murder charge. Chief Crown Prosecutor Frank Ferguson said enquiries into Kerry’s motives were ongoing, “including a potential political or terrorist connection.” In a separate update that day, Counter Terrorism Policing said no one else was being sought in connection with the incident and reported more than 800 lines of enquiry. - 7 August: Counter Terrorism Policing said it had reopened an investigation into a reported attempted burglary in Greater London in April 2025. The original investigation had been closed pending new lines of enquiry, with no arrests. Police said a line of enquiry that “may have been relevant” had not been identified and pursued at the time, and Counter Terrorism Policing London made a mandatory conduct referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The public update did not name an address or suspect, and does not establish that the burglary inquiry was the basis of the later terrorism-preparation charge. Read the 7 August police update.
- 2 October: The CPS and Counter Terrorism Policing announced the preparation-of-terrorist-acts charge, including the allegation involving Farage.
What has been publicly confirmed about the Farage allegation?
The CPS and Counter Terrorism Policing say the preparation charge includes alleged acts against Farage. Their public announcements do not set out a precise operational plan or identify an address for the alleged activity. The charge is an accusation, not proof that a plot was carried out or that Kerry is guilty.
The July police statement that there was then no information indicating a political or terrorist motive, the CPS’s later statement that motive enquiries were continuing, and the October charge are statements made at different stages of an evolving investigation. They do not, by themselves, establish a particular motive. Counter Terrorism Policing’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans described the inquiry as “a hugely intensive and complex investigation” when announcing the charge.

When is the next court appearance?
At the time of the 2 October announcements, Kerry was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 7 October 2026. The CPS announcement states that date; it is the next appearance specified in the available statements, not confirmation of what happened at a later hearing.
The CPS warns that proceedings are active and that commentary or information-sharing could prejudice the case. The appropriate distinction is between the charges and allegations reported by authorities and facts established in court.
