Homa is a research transport protocol designed to lower the tail latency of short messages in datacenters; it is not a proven replacement for TCP, and the cited studies do not show that it improves a measured LLM workload. Its benchmark results make it a credible experiment for latency-sensitive RPC traffic, while leaving the LLM connection as a hypothesis to test.
Why a datacenter transport experiment is being connected to LLMs
The title’s premise is a provocation, not evidence that language models have decided to abandon TCP. The available papers study datacenter messages and remote procedure calls (RPCs), not modern LLM training or inference workloads. They therefore support a narrower claim: Homa targets a networking problem that may matter in some datacenter applications, but an LLM-specific benefit remains unestablished.
That problem is latency under contention. When short RPCs share a network with longer transfers, the time taken by the short messages to finish can affect application responsiveness even if the network is moving plenty of data overall. Homa is built to favor short messages without giving up efficient use of the network for larger transfers.
How Homa differs from TCP
TCP exposes an ordered byte stream
TCP gives an application an ordered stream of bytes; the application defines where its messages begin and end. That general-purpose interface is used in many settings, including datacenters. The comparison does not mean TCP cannot be tuned for datacenter conditions or that it is inherently too slow for every workload.

Homa is message-oriented and receiver-driven
Homa is designed around messages and RPC traffic. In the design described by the Homa paper, the sender’s first packet communicates the message size. The receiver uses message information to manage priorities dynamically, while receiver-driven flow control and network priority queues help schedule traffic. In simplified terms, this gives the system a way to favor short messages when they compete with longer ones.
These mechanisms describe Homa’s design, not a guarantee of lower latency in every deployment. Actual outcomes also depend on the network, protocol implementation, application integration and host processing.

What the published benchmarks found
The original Homa result
The 2018 Homa paper reports 99th-percentile round-trip times below 15 microseconds for short messages on a 10 Gbps network running at 80% load. That is a result reported by the paper’s authors for their implementation and test setup, not a general latency figure for Homa in arbitrary networks.
The Homa/Linux comparison
John Ousterhout’s 2021 Homa/Linux evaluation compared the Linux kernel implementation with TCP and DCTCP in a 40-node cluster benchmark. In that benchmark, Homa/Linux had lower latency at every tested message size and 7–83 times lower 99th-percentile tail latency for short messages than the TCP and DCTCP comparisons. The reported range belongs to that experiment; it should not be read as a multiplier guaranteed on other hardware or workloads.

Network scheduling does not eliminate software costs
The Homa/Linux evaluation also identifies protocol-stack software overhead as a performance limit, including imperfect load balancing across CPU cores. Its analysis says that, in the implementation context discussed, driving a 100 Gbps network in both directions required at least 18 cores, and distributing protocol processing across multiple cores increased software overhead by 2–3 times. These figures are specific to that implementation analysis; they illustrate why transport scheduling alone cannot settle system performance.
What the LLM connection does—and does not—establish
LLM services run across datacenter infrastructure, so a protocol aimed at short-message latency is relevant to investigate. But the cited Homa papers do not report tests of LLM inference or training, nor do they establish that Homa improves an LLM service’s throughput, response time or cost. Whether a particular LLM system would benefit depends on its actual communication patterns and bottlenecks, and needs direct measurement against suitable baselines.

Implementation status and practical caveats
A Linux kernel module for Homa exists in the PlatformLab/HomaModule repository. Its maintainer documentation reports a March 2026 backport to RHEL 8 and 9.5 branches and notes that an incast optimization from the original SIGCOMM paper is not yet implemented in the module. These are mutable project notes, not certification, a support commitment or proof of widespread production use.
The Homa project wiki reports that preliminary gRPC support is available. “Preliminary” matters: it is not evidence of broad application compatibility. A deployment also involves kernel-level implementation, network priority handling, receiver scheduling and application integration, so the published latency results should not be mistaken for a drop-in configuration guide.
What would demonstrate an LLM benefit
A useful LLM-specific evaluation would need to test a defined inference or training workload and compare Homa with TCP and an appropriate datacenter baseline such as DCTCP under the same network and system conditions. It should report application-level outcomes—such as request latency or throughput—alongside message-level tail latency and CPU overhead. Without those measurements, Homa’s short-message results are a reason to investigate, not proof that an LLM service will improve.
