J.A. Bayona is reportedly Universal’s leading choice to direct a sequel to Jurassic World: Rebirth, but he has not been confirmed for the job. ComicBook.com reported on October 2, 2026, citing The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit on X, that Gareth Edwards will not direct another Jurassic World film and that Bayona is the studio’s top choice to continue the story.
Who is directing the Jurassic World: Rebirth sequel?
As of ComicBook.com’s October 2, 2026 report, no director has been formally announced. The outlet says Universal is looking to J.A. Bayona as its leading choice; the report does not establish that Bayona has accepted, or cite a Universal confirmation. It also says Gareth Edwards will not direct another Jurassic World film, attributing the change to unspecified creative issues.
That makes this a report about the studio’s apparent preference, not a finalized appointment. The available report does not establish production timing or a release schedule.
Why Bayona’s name is prompting a divided response
Bayona previously directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. ComicBook.com describes that film as generally the best-regarded installment of the Jurassic World era; that is the outlet’s characterization, not a ranking or audience metric established by the report.

The same familiarity can cut both ways: some franchise viewers may welcome a director returning to the series, while others may prefer a different direction for the sequel. ComicBook.com reproduced one fan comment calling the prospect “this would be two steps back for both parties.” It is one selected reaction, not evidence of a representative fan consensus; the article provides no poll or count of responses.
Bayona’s other directing credits include The Impossible, The Orphanage, A Monster Calls, and Society of the Snow. ComicBook.com also notes his television work on Penny Dreadful and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

What is reported about the cast?
ComicBook.com says Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali are expected to return, and that Anne Hathaway has expressed interest in joining. Those details appear in the same entertainment-news report; they should not be read as fresh, official casting announcements.
The article also says Bayona has two other projects in early development. It does not establish how those projects might affect his availability for a Jurassic World sequel.
