That is a $100.99 gap between the announced starting prices—not a like-for-like verdict. HP’s launch model is specified with a 2K OLED display, while Apple lists a 13-inch Liquid Retina screen. The two laptops also run Windows and macOS, respectively, so the right choice depends on configuration, software needs and the price available when you buy.
What HP announced for the OmniBook 5
HP announced the OmniBook 5 14 AI PC on October 1, 2026, as a consumer laptop for productivity, study, collaboration, content creation and entertainment. The company says it is expected to reach HP.com and Best Buy in the U.S. during October 2026. That announcement does not confirm live stock or final retailer pricing.

HP OmniBook 5 16” Touchscreen AI Laptop – Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD,... | $970.00 | Buy on Amazon |
HP describes an aluminum chassis in Smoke Silver, Starlit Blue, Peony Pink or Soft Honeydew. Listed features include up to an Intel Core 7 processor with integrated NPU capabilities, a 180-degree hinge, two full-function USB-C ports, an FHD IR camera with Windows Hello facial recognition, dual microphones, Poly Studio-tuned audio and DTS:X Ultra. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. HP’s October 1 announcement provides the full product details.
Launch display and later option
The launch configuration is described as having a 2K OLED display with brightness up to 300 nits. HP says a separate 2.5K OLED version, rated up to 620 nits, is planned for March 2027. That brighter, higher-resolution option is a future configuration, not the announced launch specification.

Size and battery claim
HP lists the laptop at 11.77 mm thick and 1.16 kg. It claims up to 42 hours of local FHD video playback in its test: continuous playback at 200 nits, with specified system and player audio settings and wireless enabled but not connected. HP cautions that actual battery life varies by configuration and declines with time and use; the figure should not be treated as a general-use estimate.
How the announced starting prices compare
| Product | Announced U.S. starting price | Display listed in announcement | Battery-life claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC | $699.99 | 2K OLED, up to 300 nits at launch | Up to 42 hours of local FHD video under HP’s stated test conditions |
| Apple MacBook Neo | $599 | 13-inch Liquid Retina, 2408 × 1506, up to 500 nits; support for one billion colors | Up to 16 hours, as claimed by Apple; the announcement does not establish a matched test method with HP |
The $100.99 difference is calculated from the two companies’ announced U.S. starting prices. It does not establish that similarly equipped configurations cost that much apart, and discounts, final retailer prices and availability can change. Check the precise configuration and live transaction price before deciding.
Apple announced MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, with an A18 Pro chip and macOS Tahoe. The OmniBook 5 is a Windows PC with up to an Intel Core 7 option. Neither announcement provides an independent head-to-head benchmark for these exact products. Apple’s own performance comparisons use preproduction Neo systems against specified Intel Core Ultra 5 PCs; they are not a comparison with the OmniBook 5. Apple’s announcement outlines its specifications and testing claims.

Display priorities
The OmniBook’s OLED technology may be a draw if you specifically want OLED, but HP’s launch figure is up to 300 nits. Apple specifies a 500-nit Liquid Retina display, but that is a different display technology and a different screen size. Brightness figures alone do not establish which screen looks better in person; consider the type of work, lighting and display qualities you value.
Operating system and software
Choose based first on the apps, services and workflow you need. Windows and macOS are not interchangeable for every game, creative tool, school system or peripheral. Confirm that your essential software and devices work on the system you plan to buy rather than treating the processor names as a performance ranking.
Battery life
HP and Apple publish different maximum battery-life claims, but their announcements do not establish a common test method. The figures therefore cannot support a direct endurance winner. For a useful comparison, look for independent testing of both exact configurations under comparable brightness, workload and wireless settings.
Ports, availability and support
HP specifically lists two full-function USB-C ports; Apple’s announcement lists the Neo’s specifications separately, so compare the actual ports and any adapters required for your accessories before purchase. HP’s stated U.S. sales channels are HP.com and Best Buy, with October 2026 expected availability; verify current stock and the model configuration on the retailer’s live listing. Also compare warranty and support terms for the exact seller and region.
What the announcements do—and do not—establish
The releases establish announced specifications, company battery claims and starting prices, not independent quality, real-world speed, comparative battery performance or a universal best choice. HP’s planned March 2027 display option is also distinct from the launch configuration. A sound purchase decision needs current listings plus testing of the configurations you are considering, especially if gaming or demanding creative work is central to your use.
