The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has the ingredients of a compelling space RPG: a crisis on Eros, a crew with distinct skills, consequential choices, and tactical third-person combat. Owlcat Games has described an appealing design, but those announcements establish potential—not that the finished game will be great. The available official information also does not verify a specific Gamescom 2026 reveal, so the case for the game rests on what Owlcat and its platform listings have actually announced.
What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
Owlcat Games describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as a single-player, third-person science-fiction action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse. You play a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose shore leave on Eros is upended by a station-wide lockdown and a wider conspiracy. The setup puts survival, a fractured crew, and the fate of the solar system on the same narrative track. Owlcat’s announcement says the player must unite the crew and take command of an advanced ship.
Xbox Wire’s March 26, 2026 overview, written by Owlcat community manager Gala Dolgikh, adds that the player and their twin work for Pinkwater Security, witness a massacre on Eros, and escape aboard an experimental enemy ship. The official Steam listing says players can create a captain who is an Earther, Martian, or Belter. The sources describe the premise and character setup, but do not establish how much freedom the final story will give players within it.
Why its announced design has space-RPG potential
A personal crisis with wider stakes
Eros gives the story an immediate survival problem, while the conspiracy promises to widen the conflict beyond one station. That combination could give the crew a practical reason to cooperate and make the larger political setting matter to the player’s decisions. Whether the story earns that escalation will depend on its writing and pacing, which cannot be judged from an announcement.

A crew whose abilities may shape play
The announced companions are more than names on a ship roster: Owlcat and Xbox Wire describe them as combat helpers with different skills, including support from outside the active squad. Dolgikh identifies Zafar as a mechanic, Regina as a networker and marksman, Teo as a medic, and Michael as a mercenary; the player’s twin is presented as a close ally. Distinct roles could make squad choices meaningful, but the descriptions do not yet show how deep companion development or mission-specific interactions will be.
Choices linked to relationships
Xbox Wire says missions can present consequential choices, while the Steam description says relationships with crew members can improve or deteriorate according to the player’s choices and leadership. Dolgikh writes, “Each mission in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn presents you with a choice, one that may entail large long-lasting consequences.” The promise is stronger than a simple dialogue-choice pitch because it connects decisions to both story and crew dynamics; the degree and consistency of those consequences remain to be demonstrated.

Combat with tactical options
The announced combat is cover-focused third-person shooting augmented by abilities, gadgets, companion support, and real-time commands. Xbox Wire names zero-gravity grenades, tactical scanning, and combat drones among the systems described for the beta. Steam also refers to companion “Exploits” that let crew members capitalize on openings in combat. These mechanics could give fights a tactical layer beyond aiming and firing, but no announcement can establish whether encounters feel responsive, varied, or well balanced in practice.
Recognizable places across the solar system
The official Steam description lists Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna among the locations, alongside ruined habitats and political strongholds. Those places offer a route to varied environments rooted in the franchise’s solar-system setting. The listing does not establish how large or open the explorable areas are, or how much time the game spends on exploration rather than missions and combat.

What has—and has not—been confirmed about Gamescom 2026
The title’s Gamescom framing should not be mistaken for verified event coverage. The available material does not include an authoritative Owlcat or Gamescom page confirming a 2026 showcase or identifying its exact footage. A third-party YouTube result describes a Gamescom demo, but that alone is not enough to treat particular scenes or features as confirmed Gamescom revelations. The game’s announced premise and systems can be discussed on their own; specific claims about what was shown at the event are not established here.
Release window, beta, and access
Planned release
The Steam listing currently gives Q2 2027 as the planned release window. Xbox Wire’s March 2026 overview used the broader wording “Spring 2027” and announced day-one availability with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Neither source gives an exact launch date, so the quarter is the most specific current timing established here.

Closed beta announcement
Xbox Wire announced a closed beta beginning April 22, 2026, for eligible Founders who bought the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition through the official game site. The announced beta was to include a full early-game mission. Because its stated start date has passed, that announcement does not establish whether sign-ups or access are still available; check the official game site for current status before relying on it.
Platforms and storefronts
Owlcat’s announcement links to wishlists on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store. Xbox Wire covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud, and says the game will support Xbox Play Anywhere. These announcements identify platforms and storefronts, but they are not a complete, independently confirmed final platform list. Check the relevant official store pages for current availability in your region.

Content advisory
The developer-provided Steam content description warns of depictions of blood and slavery, as well as textual references to abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assault, self-harm, suicide, and miscarriage. It cautions that some scenes and text may disturb some players. Readers who want more detail can consult the content notice on the official Steam listing.
What still needs to be proven
The announced features make a coherent pitch: a crew-led crisis, relationships affected by decisions, squad roles, tactical action, and travel among familiar solar-system locations. The important unknown is execution. The available official descriptions do not establish the quality of the writing, the depth of the role-playing systems, the impact of choices across the full campaign, or the variety and feel of combat. Until players can assess the completed game, “potential” is the defensible conclusion—not a verdict that it is already a great RPG.
