Proof-of-work cryptocurrency mining did not permanently destroy PC gaming, but it did help make graphics cards scarce and expensive during major crypto cycles. Miners and gamers wanted the same discrete GPUs; when mining demand surged, it added pressure to a market already strained by pandemic demand and supply constraints.
Why did crypto miners compete with PC gamers?
Discrete graphics cards can accelerate the calculations used by some proof-of-work cryptocurrencies as well as render games. That made gaming GPUs a shared resource: when mining became attractive, miners could compete with players for the same cards. NVIDIA acknowledged that its gaming GPUs were used for digital-currency mining in disclosures to investors.
The effect was not simply that every card disappeared. More mining demand could tighten availability, push street prices above manufacturers’ suggested prices, and make resale prices volatile. How much it mattered varied with cryptocurrency prices and mining profitability; the pressure could rise or recede as those conditions changed.
Did mining alone make graphics cards impossible to buy?
No. Mining was a significant source of demand, but it was not the only cause of the GPU shortage. NVIDIA also cited pandemic-related demand and supply constraints. Graphics memory faced its own market pressure: TrendForce reported that graphics DRAM contract prices rose nearly 15% quarter over quarter in Q3 2021.

Those factors overlapped with scalping and normal product cycles. The evidence supports mining as an important contributor to disruption, not as a complete explanation for every shortage or high price. It also does not support the claim that PC gaming itself was permanently destroyed.
How did NVIDIA respond to mining demand?
NVIDIA introduced mining limits, including an Ethereum hash-rate reduction on the RTX 3060. A limiter could make a particular card less attractive for the targeted mining workload, but it did not remove the broader market forces affecting supply, demand, or prices.

For buyers, a mining limiter was therefore not a guarantee that a card would be easy to find at its suggested price. Availability still depended on the wider market, and the relevant mining algorithm or cryptocurrency mattered.
Did Ethereum’s Merge fix GPU prices?
Ethereum moved from proof of work to proof of stake in September 2022. That transition reduced the need to use GPUs for Ethereum mining, but it was not a universal fix for graphics-card prices: it changed demand for one major mining use, while other supply and demand conditions remained relevant.

NVIDIA’s 2022 Form 10-Q described both sides of the possible market effect: “Changes to cryptocurrency standards and processes including, but not limited to, the recently implemented Ethereum 2.0 merge may decrease the usage of GPUs for Ethereum mining as well as create increased aftermarket sales of our GPUs, which could negatively impact retail prices for our GPUs and reduce demand for our new GPUs.” In other words, fewer mining uses could ease competition for new cards while also bringing more used cards into resale markets and putting pressure on prices.

Could mining damage or devalue a gaming GPU?
A card’s mining history alone does not establish its condition or value. The evidence here does not provide a reliable rule for how long a mined card lasts or how much less it is worth. Buyers considering a used GPU should assess the individual card and its warranty rather than assume that every mining-used card is either damaged or a bargain.

- Ask whether the card was used for mining and what warranty coverage remains.
- Check its actual condition and operation before buying when possible.
- Compare its price with alternatives, since resale prices can shift when miners sell hardware back into the market.
What was the wider cost of proof-of-work mining?
The energy demand was substantial at the national level. A U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy estimate put cryptocurrency mining at 0.9%–1.7% of annual U.S. electricity use, or 36–66 billion kilowatt-hours per year in mid-2022. The estimate was reproduced by the U.S. Government Publishing Office in a 2023 congressional hearing document. It describes U.S. electricity use, not the electricity footprint of gaming GPUs specifically.
What did NVIDIA disclose about crypto demand?
The regulatory record also shows why mining demand was more than a consumer rumor. In 2022, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said its order found NVIDIA’s omissions “misleading given that NVIDIA did make statements about how other parts of the company’s business were driven by demand for crypto.” That statement concerns NVIDIA’s disclosures about crypto-related demand; it does not mean mining was the sole cause of GPU-market problems.
