Rockstar and the Miami Heat are teaming up for “A Night in Vice City,” a promotion that temporarily gives the basketball team Vice City branding. The hook in PC Gamer’s October 2, 2026 report is that several of its UK staffers said they did not know the Heat. That is a funny newsroom reaction—not evidence that UK audiences generally have never heard of the team.
What is “A Night in Vice City”?
It is a cross-promotion between Rockstar and the Miami Heat, the US basketball team. For the promotion, the team is temporarily using Vice City branding, tying the real-world sports identity to the fictional setting of Grand Theft Auto VI.
PC Gamer’s report describes the promotion and the reactions of its staff. It does not report campaign terms, attendance, merchandise availability, or measured audience results, so the event should not be read as evidence of a particular commercial outcome.
Why did the headline say UK editors had not heard of the Heat?
The headline turns a handful of PC Gamer staff reactions into a joke about the distance between a US sports team and a UK games newsroom. The story is anecdotal: the staff count varies as the discussion unfolds, and it is not a representative survey of UK editors, sports fans, or the public.

One US-based colleague, news writer Joshua Wolens, also said he did not know what a Miami Heat was. PC Gamer reported his explanation: “But I generally assume I don’t know most of what’s happening in the modern world.” That is part of the staff exchange, not a statistic about US awareness.
Is this a smart way to market GTA 6?
The PC Gamer staff discussion centers on a familiar marketing trade-off: reach a focused audience likely to care already, or put the game in front of people who might not be following it.

The case for a broader touchpoint
Audience development manager Cameron Bald suggested the promotion could reach “The super-casual types who are still on a PS4 and need convincing that GTA 6 is worth getting back into games over.” Lauren Morton likened the logic to an impulse-purchase display: broad exposure may make a product visible even to people who were not actively looking for it.
The case that the partnership is niche
Online editor Fraser Brown questioned whether the basketball tie-in would reach enough people compared with a larger entertainment placement: “A basketball stunt is so much more niche than, say, the Netflix trailer.” His point is an opinion about relative reach, not a measured comparison of the campaign’s audiences.

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. The game’s announced platforms make Bald’s PS4 remark a marketing hypothesis about lapsed or casual players—not an indication that GTA VI is listed for PS4.

What the story does—and does not—tell us
- It does tell us: Rockstar and the Miami Heat are staging a Vice City-branded promotion, and PC Gamer staffers debated whether it could reach casual players or was too niche.
- It does not tell us: how many people know the Miami Heat in the UK, how many saw the promotion, or whether it increased GTA VI awareness or sales.
