Warlock’s reported spell-design approach is to start with magic that feels overpowered and fun, then balance it. Invoke Studios head Dominic Guay described that change in thinking to Edge, issue #429, as reported by GamesRadar+. The concrete example is Black Tentacles: it can pin an ogre’s weapon to the ground, while the ogre itself reportedly breaks free faster if the spell targets it.
Why the team wanted spells to feel powerful first
Guay said the developers initially tended to reject ideas as too powerful. The team eventually decided to reverse that instinct: “No. Make it OP first, make it fun, and then we’ll balance it.” That is a description of the team’s design approach, not a claim that every spell remains overpowered in the finished game.
The emphasis, in the report, is on finding entertaining uses for magic before tuning its effects. That leaves balance as a later step rather than the first filter applied to a spell idea.
What Black Tentacles shows about spell interactions
GamesRadar’s example distinguishes between affecting an enemy and affecting what the enemy is holding. Black Tentacles can bind an ogre’s weapon to the ground. If the ogre itself is targeted, it reportedly breaks free more quickly.

The example suggests that a spell’s usefulness can depend on its target, not just its name or broad effect. It illustrates one reported interaction; it does not establish how every spell or enemy behaves.
How the reported controls support quick spell combinations
Rather than relying only on selecting spells from a list, Warlock uses combinations of controller buttons to choose them, according to GamesRadar. Guay described chaining melee attacks and multiple spells in real time: “Once you get the hang of it, you’re able to chain melee attacks, spell, spell, spell, and think on the fly.” He also said the team wanted “that realtime expression of magic instead of something that feels a bit slower.”

The design trade-off is clear in Guay’s account: button combinations can support rapid sequences, but players have to learn the input scheme. GamesRadar says spells unlock during the journey and that the game needs onboarding because its controller approach differs from that of some other games. Guay summed up the intended learning curve this way: “The player will learn to be a warlock at the same time as the character.”

The account supports a narrow conclusion: the developers described starting spell ideas at an entertaining, powerful extreme and balancing them afterward, with Black Tentacles as an example of different outcomes for an object and a creature. It does not provide a spell count, numerical balance data, or a basis for judging the full game’s balance in practice.
