“Basketball boss in China” is a loose media label, not the name of an official post. In reporting about Yao Ming, it refers to the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). SPORT1 reported that Yao resigned on 31 October 2024 and was succeeded by former deputy chairman Guo Zhenming; that report does not establish who holds the position today.
What does “basketball boss in China” mean?
In coverage of Yao Ming, “Chinese basketball boss” is shorthand for his formal role as CBA chairman. It should not be read as proof that one person personally controls every Chinese basketball league, club or national-team decision.
Who succeeded Yao Ming as CBA chairman?
SPORT1, citing SID, reported that Yao Ming resigned on 31 October 2024 after serving as chairman since 2017. The report named former deputy chairman Guo Zhenming as his successor. SPORT1 attributed Yao’s departure to personal reasons and quoted a statement referring to consideration of Chinese basketball’s development and his personal planning. What does the CBA do in club discipline?
A separate case reported by the South China Morning Post illustrates the association’s disciplinary role. On 20 May 2026, the newspaper reported that the CBA announced sanctions against Inner Mongolia Nongxin after a court found that the club’s then general manager Guo Jiajie and player Zou Qijia had attempted bribery.
According to the SCMP report, the club was suspended until May 2029 and stripped of its 2023–24 runners-up place; two other officials received three-year bans. These were reported consequences of that specific case, not evidence that the CBA chair personally directed every decision. Read the South China Morning Post report of 20 May 2026.
